Expert Review: The Syntopia

The Syntopia in Crete, Greece, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers an adults-only experience characterized by its bohemian-chic design and a strong emphasis on hospitality. It generally garners a highly positive response from guests, though some specific criticisms exist.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Syntopia consistently receives high marks from guests. On Booking.com, it holds a "Wonderful" to "Superb" rating of 9.0 out of 10 based on over 130 reviews. TUI.co.uk shows an impressive 4.7 out of 5 from 572 reviews, with 80% rating it as excellent. Reviewers frequently highlight the friendly staff, stylish design, and excellent food, contributing to an overwhelmingly positive sentiment.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's distinctive aesthetic and array of amenities. The design is a standout, described as bohemian-chic, Scandi-style, sleek, minimalist, and festival-inspired, creating "gypset vibes" throughout. The interior blends earthy tones, natural textures, olive wood furnishings, and handcrafted ceramic tiles, aiming to connect comfort, people, and nature.

Amenities include two swimming pools, with one heated during May and October, a full-service spa, and a fitness center. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. The rooftop bar is frequently praised for its "best views and best cocktails". Unique touches like "overwater" sunbeds and a lounge tepee by the pool add to the relaxing atmosphere. The adults-only policy is a significant draw, fostering a tranquil environment. The all-inclusive option is also a major highlight, with many guests praising the quality and variety of food and drinks.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at The Syntopia are noted for being spacious, modern, and consistently very clean. They are simply furnished, offering private balconies with either mountain or pool views. Standard in-room amenities include free wireless internet, satellite TV, a refrigerator, air conditioning, safes, a flat-screen TV, and tea/coffee making facilities. Bathrooms feature rainfall showers and hairdryers. The design extends to the rooms with Scandi-style elements, olive wood furnishings, handcrafted ceramic bathroom tiles, sisal baskets, and traditional Cretan embroidered cushions, providing a blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. Guests have described rooms as "enormous and beautiful" and beds as "very comfortable". A variety of room types are available, including Double Rooms, Superior Rooms with Sea View and Jacuzzi, and Suites.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at The Syntopia is a strong point, particularly for those on an all-inclusive plan. The food is consistently described as "spectacular," "out of this world," and "delicious". The main restaurant, "The Bite," operates on a buffet basis, offering early bird, full breakfast, lunch, and dinner services. Breakfast includes an abundant spread of hot and cold dishes, fresh pastries, fruits, cereals, and freshly squeezed juices, encompassing Cretan and international favorites. Both Greek and international cuisines are served, with options like moussaka, Greek salads, omelets, and pizzas, and the menu reportedly changes daily to prevent repetition. The hotel is also noted for catering to various dietary requirements, offering seasonal vegan, vegetarian, and many gluten-free options.

For lighter fare, "The Canteen" provides snacks such as toasties, wraps, and nachos with a "festival theme" or "street food style eats". Drinks are readily available, with a rooftop bar praised for its cocktails and poolside waiter service. A smart casual dress code is in effect for dinner. While generally positive, some guests on longer stays have found the buffet repetitive. There have also been isolated complaints about insufficient vegan options, despite prior assurances, leading some guests to purchase meals outside the hotel.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Syntopia receive overwhelmingly positive feedback, frequently cited as one of the hotel's best assets. Guests describe the staff as "amazing and thoughtful," "super friendly," "nicest staff we ever had," and "always happy to help," going "above and beyond" to ensure a perfect stay. Reviewers appreciate the promptness of service, such as quick plate clearings and drink refills. Specific mentions include Lia on guest relations for excellent service, and the front desk team for being "highly informative and kind" with useful recommendations for Rethymno. The hotel offers a 24-hour reception and concierge services to assist guests. However, one reviewer noted staff seeming "tired and indifferent" and not professional or welcoming, which they felt did not match the expected standards for the price range.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Syntopia is located in Adelianos Kampos, a peaceful area east of Rethymnon. It is ideally situated opposite or "just steps away" from a golden sandy or pebble beach, with a beach bar "Roulis" just 300-400 meters away. The hotel is approximately 7km from the center of Rethymnon. Convenient public transport is available, with a bus to Rethymnon taking about 13-20 minutes and departing every 30 minutes from a station just a 1-minute walk from the hotel. A taxi ride to Rethymnon takes around 7 minutes and costs €8-€11. The hotel is also close to local shops, bars, and restaurants, with the nearest being about 50 meters away. Chania airport is approximately 80km away.

Despite these advantages, the location receives some mixed reviews. One Michelin Guide guest described the location as "awful" and on a "tacky, touristy strip of hotels and souvenir shops," suggesting the attempt to camouflage the building behind bamboo didn't work. Another criticism mentioned the hotel facing a main road with constant noise and inconvenient parking under a bridge next to garbage bins.

7. Value & Pricing

The Syntopia generally offers good value for money, scoring 8.3 out of 10 on Booking.com. All-inclusive packages are a popular choice. Example pricing for all-inclusive holidays from London Luton included £840 per person for 4 nights, £1,010 per person for 7 nights, and £1,380 per person for 10 nights. Kayak shows rates starting from $148. However, some guests have felt that for the price paid, the quality of food and drinks could be improved, and there should be a sufficient number of sunbeds for all guests. There was also an instance where a guest on an all-inclusive package had to purchase lunch outside, although this was later clarified as a mix-up by the hotel.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, recurring criticisms include:

  • Location drawbacks: The immediate surroundings have been described as an "unsuitable area" with a main road causing noise, and inconvenient parking under a bridge near garbage bins. One Michelin Guide reviewer found the location "awful" on a "tacky, touristy strip".
  • Food repetition and vegan options: Some guests on longer stays found the buffet meals to be repetitive. There were also complaints regarding the lack of substantial vegan options despite prior assurances, leading to dissatisfaction and the need to seek food elsewhere.
  • All-inclusive limitations: A few guests felt the all-inclusive package was not truly comprehensive, citing additional costs for items like bottled water.
  • Sunbed availability: Some reviews mentioned an insufficient number of sunbeds for the hotel's capacity.
  • Odor issues: One guest reported a "bad smell on the first floor that smelled like sewer".
  • Room lighting: Inadequate lighting over washbasins and in showers was noted by one reviewer.

We arrived as a couple at the hotel for two nights of peace and quiet to clear our heads and celebrate our anniversary and my wife's birthday. First, we were greeted with a light snack, explained the hotel to us and received an upgraded room for the hotel's main pool. We did not expect such a high-level hotel at all. Nice, friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is designed in an indescribable way, ...

A design-led, adults-only escape in Crete From the moment we arrived, it was clear Syntopia isn’t trying to shout for attention — and that’s exactly its strength. Arriving by rental car, the entrance is discreetly tucked away on a side street (easy to miss if you’re not paying attention), and while there’s no dedicated hotel parking, we always found a spot in the quiet backstreets behind the hot...
