Château de Sully, a prestigious 18th-century property nestled in the Normandy countryside near Bayeux, offers guests an authentic French château experience, recognized with a Michelin Key selection. It is widely praised for its charming ambiance, exceptional service, and high-quality gastronomic offerings, making it a highly recommended destination for those seeking a blend of history, luxury, and tranquility.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general sentiment for Château de Sully is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "superb," "amazing," and a "true gem." It holds strong ratings for cleanliness (9.0), comfort (8.9), location (9.1), services (8.7), and staff (9.2) on Momondo. The hotel's selection by the Michelin Guide further underscores its commitment to quality hospitality.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the Château de Sully for several standout features:

  • Historic Setting & Design: The majestic 18th-century château and its immaculately maintained, beautiful grounds, complete with Lebanese cedars and sequoias, create a wonderful and peaceful atmosphere.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff receive high praise for being excellent, friendly, helpful, hospitable, knowledgeable, and accommodating, often going out of their way to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Gastronomic Restaurant: The on-site restaurant, "Le 1720," is celebrated for its very high standard of creative, Normandy-focused gastronomic cuisine.
  • Wellness Facilities: The hotel boasts a full-service spa with an indoor heated pool, two hot tubs, and a sauna, providing excellent recreational amenities for relaxation.
  • Strategic Location: Despite its quiet, rural setting, the château is conveniently located close to Bayeux's town center and serves as an ideal base for exploring the D-Day landing beaches and other Normandy attractions.

3. Room Quality

The Château de Sully offers 25 personalized and comfortable rooms and suites designed to reflect the elegance of its era. Rooms feature refined and luminous spaces where delicate fabric shades harmonize with charming antique furnishings. Modern amenities include complimentary wireless internet access, flat-screen televisions, safes, coffee/tea makers (including Nespresso machines), bathrobes, slippers, designer toiletries, and hair dryers. Many rooms offer pleasant views of the park or the surrounding countryside. While most guests find the rooms comfortable and well-appointed, there have been some isolated comments suggesting that certain rooms, particularly in the main house, could benefit from upgrades, with some furnishings described as "a bit old and tired."

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Château de Sully is a significant highlight.

  • Le 1720 Restaurant: Named after the year the Château was built, the restaurant offers creative gastronomic cuisine under the guidance of Michelin-starred Chef Nicolas Fages, with a wine selection curated by Sommelier Grégory Colleville. Diners can enjoy seasonal Normandy-focused dishes such as foie gras, smoked eel, scallops, squab, roast deer, tender pigeon, roasted turbot, and Cotentin lobster. The setting, in plush dining rooms or a bright conservatory overlooking the English park, is described as wonderful and beautiful. Dinner is frequently praised as "magnificent" and "beyond compare." The restaurant operates for evening service from Tuesday to Sunday, typically from 7:15 PM to 9:00 PM.
  • Breakfast: The breakfast buffet generally receives positive feedback, with guests calling it "perfect" and "great." However, a few guests have noted some limitations, mentioning "poor cereal options," "unappealing eggs," and issues with the coffee machine.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Château de Sully are consistently a major point of commendation. Guests frequently highlight the team as "excellent," "amazing," "very helpful," "friendly," "hospitable," "knowledgeable," and "accommodating." Many guests have noted that the staff "went out of their way to make you happy." This high level of hospitality contributes significantly to the overall positive guest experience. While there was one isolated very negative review describing staff as "extremely arrogant," this appears to be a rare outlier against a vast number of positive comments.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Château de Sully enjoys a tranquil location in the heart of the Normandy countryside, offering a peaceful retreat. It is conveniently situated just "3 km from downtown Bayeux" or a "5-minute drive from the center," making it easily accessible to the town's historical attractions like the medieval center, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the UNESCO World Heritage Bayeux Tapestry. The hotel is also an excellent base for exploring the D-Day landing beaches, being "10 minutes from Omaha Beach" and less than 30 minutes from other significant sites. The property offers free, secure self-parking under video surveillance, and four 22 KW EV charging points are available for a flat rate of €35 per charge. The hotel is accessible to people with reduced mobility, offering one specially adapted room. Check-in is available from 3:30 PM to 10:00 PM, with the reception open daily until 11:00 PM.

7. Value & Pricing

The value for money at Château de Sully receives a Momondo rating of 8.3. While some guests consider the prices to be "high end," the overall consensus suggests that the experience justifies the cost for many, especially given its luxurious offerings and Michelin Key selection. Nightly rates can vary significantly by season and room type; for instance, Momondo lists Classic rooms from approximately £121 and Deluxe rooms from around £160. The hotel's official website also offers specialized packages, such as "Gourmet Stay" from €495/night, "Gastronomic Stay" from €630/night, and "Prestige Stay" from €668/night. February typically presents the cheapest rates, while June is the most expensive month to stay. Extra beds are available for an additional €70 per person per night.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Condition: A few guests have mentioned that some rooms, particularly in the main building, could use updating, with furnishings described as "a bit old and tired." There were isolated complaints about specific room conditions, such as "curtains didn't close" or "filthy carpet."
  • WiFi Connectivity: One guest reported that the "WiFi wasn't too good."
  • Bathroom Amenities: The absence of heated towel rails in bathrooms was a point of criticism for some.
  • Breakfast Variety: While generally good, some guests expressed dissatisfaction with the limited "cereal options" and "unappealing eggs" at breakfast, along with issues concerning the coffee machine.
  • EV Charging Cost: The flat rate of €35 for electric vehicle charging was deemed "impractical" by one reviewer.

The chateau is beautiful and the grounds are very well kept. The lady that checked us in was superb! Sadly I can’t recall her name. The large bathtub was great and the spacious room was very comfortable. We weren’t there long enough to try the spa service. But I would love to go back here and stay a couple nights. The restaurant looked really nice as well. Would love to try it someday.

This was the second time we stayed at Chateau de Sully and we will come back! This is not the Ritz-Carlton but it's a very nice hotel located in a great area near Bayeux and the beaches of Normandy. I mention the Ritz-Carlton only because one obnoxious guest (American - I am sorry to say) kept loudly complaining about everything during our stay as if this was supposed to be the Ritz-Carlton... Review of the restaurant. What a sad disappointment. The worst experience in a week of good food in Normandy. The building is indeed impressive and extraordinarily well kept. The only exception is the toilet, which seems to require a bit of attention. Unfortunately, the service or food have not been matching expectations. I emailed to book well in advance. I did not receive a response for some ...

We just stayed here for one night, and I wish we could have extended our stay. We are traveling with our six children, and the family suite was perfect for us. Spacious, quiet, and comfortable. The grounds are very well kept and beautiful. We had a drink last evening in the bar, and there is a nice separate game room where the children played chess and cards. Breakfast was generous and a lovely sp...
