Expert Review: Bluebird Hunter Lodge

Bluebird Hunter Lodge, nestled in the scenic Catskills and Hudson Valley, offers a distinctive and appealing retreat, having earned recognition as a Michelin Key Selected property. This honor highlights its unique hospitality concept, character, warm welcome, and high level of service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Bluebird Hunter Lodge is highly positive, with guest ratings typically ranging from "fabulous" to "excellent" (8.6-9.0 out of 10). Guests frequently praise the cleanliness, comfort, and prime location. While most experiences are positive, some recurring issues relate to noise and the breakfast offerings.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the lodge's clean, spacious, and comfortable rooms, along with its excellent location and the beautiful mountain views. The hotel's design, a modern interpretation of a 70s-inspired ski lodge, blending textured wood and stone with rustic-yet-modern decor, is also a significant draw. Amenities such as a game room, a cozy lobby fireplace, and complimentary parking enhance the guest experience. The helpful and friendly staff, particularly the bar team, also receive high marks.

3. Room Quality

The 44 accommodations, including 14 suites, are described as beautifully clean, modern, spacious, and well-designed. Rooms feature comfortable beds, private bathrooms with complimentary Ursa Major bath products, and in some cases, private patios or decks. Many guests particularly appreciate rooms with mountain views, some noting them as "spectacular." Deluxe and Chalet Suites offer additional space, with some featuring fully equipped kitchens and living rooms. However, some guests have noted that rooms can be quite dark, and the property does not have an elevator, which can be challenging for luggage to upper floors.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site Hunter Tavern offers dinner from Thursday to Sunday, serving upmarket American dishes that change seasonally, including popular items like barbecue pulled-pork sandwiches and burgers. A complimentary buffet breakfast, including bagels, fresh fruit, coffee, and tea, is provided on weekends. However, several guests have found the breakfast options to be basic or limited, occasionally lacking variety such as bagels or toast. A "grab-and-go" breakfast option is also available.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Bluebird Hunter Lodge are consistently praised for their pleasant, friendly, and helpful demeanor. Guests often highlight instances where staff went "above and beyond" to assist with issues, contributing to a "super cozy & excellent service" experience. The bar staff, in particular, has been noted as "out of this world" for their service and drink quality.

6. Location & Accessibility

The lodge boasts an excellent location at 7433 Main Street in Hunter, right at the base of Hunter Mountain. This makes it an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts, offering direct access to skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, snowshoeing, hiking on trails like Huckleberry and Becker Hollow, mountain biking, and zip-lining. The town of Hunter is within walking distance, and other nearby towns like Tannersville and Lexington are a short drive away, offering additional dining and exploration opportunities. Free private parking is available on site. For those traveling by air, Albany International Airport is approximately 43 miles away, about an hour's drive. It's important to note that the lodge is not suitable for wheelchair users.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests generally consider Bluebird Hunter Lodge to offer good value for money, with a rating of 8.5 for this category. Room rates can start from approximately $139 to $166 per night, though prices fluctuate based on the season. The "low season," particularly April and September, tends to offer the cheapest deals, while December is typically the most expensive month.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, guest feedback does point to a few recurring issues. Noise from other guests or the heating system has been mentioned as a disturbance for some. The complimentary breakfast, while available, is often described as basic or limited in options. Some guests have found the room lighting to be insufficient, making rooms too dark, and have expressed dissatisfaction with limited TV channel options or streaming availability. Additionally, the absence of an elevator can be inconvenient for guests with luggage on upper floors, and a few instances of power outages without a backup generator have been reported.

The Hunter Lodge exceeded expectations. The staff were courteous and helpful, and the room (with two queen beds) was spacious and comfortable. The beds were soft and the pillows super fluffy, which I love! we especially appreciated the heat lamp in the bathroom to keep you toasty or dry wet clothes. The decor in the room and throughout the lodge can be described as elevated ski lodge - deep hunter...

location and staff services are great. Friendly warm place , pet friendly . Rooms have been updated since the old Hunter Inn days. Only complaint is the room lighting. The interior decor is dark in color and the lighting is low and harsh. picture Edison light bulbs !! other than that, definitely good place to stay .

Definitely a place to come back to! The accommodations are very comfortable. It looks to be a modernized/updated motel but the rooms are spacious (bathrooms are smaller but updated) and the common space is also very nice and large. They offer free continental breakfast in the morning and fresh popcorn snack in the afternoon. We were traveling with a few kids but there was plenty of space to spre...

Great stay during New Years. The hotel itself is well located about 2 minutes from Hunter Mountain. The hotel itself is very nice with great staff. Restaurant was great! My only minor issue with the rooms is that lighting is on one side of the room only making it pretty dark at night.

I must say.. I work in hotel operations & frequent them often… this shower was phenomenal — maybe the best yet! The back second floor patio was a hidden gem, loved the coffee available 24/7 & the cozy warmth of morning breakfast in the tavern served complimentary with the fire roaring.. like a dream. The bed, I was the most snug I’ve been in years! As much as I wish dinner & the bar at Hunters Tav...

The overall experience was positive. Dinner was ok but very chaotic, I dont think they were staffed appropriately to handle all the people in the dining room. Every question we had for the waiter was answered with "I dont know" so that was disappointing. The game room is 2 arcade games and a TV. Was hoping for a bigger hang out area. Coffee was available all day and they had a nice variety of choi...
