Austin Motel, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a unique and memorable stay in the vibrant heart of Austin, blending retro charm with modern comforts and exceptional hospitality.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Austin Motel consistently receives high praise, with an "Excellent" rating of 8.8 out of 10 based on numerous guest reviews. Guests frequently describe their stays as "fun," "unique," and commend its "retro vibe" and "great location". It is celebrated for its distinctive personality and serves as an affordable, character-filled choice for travelers.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly drawn to the motel's vibrant design and lively amenities. The property boasts a retro-chic, midcentury motor court architecture with thoughtful, colorful touches that preserve its eclectic spirit. A standout feature is the iconic kidney-shaped outdoor pool, often lauded as "amazing," "wonderful," and potentially "the best hotel pool in South Congress". The pool area frequently hosts live music, drag shows, and movie screenings, complete with a Pool Bar. Other amenities include free parking, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk (though sometimes with limited staffing for late check-in), complimentary lobby coffee, and on-site laundry facilities. The recently opened Rocky's Bar, offering tropical cocktails and shave ice, adds to the unique experience. Its location in the bustling South Congress (SoCo) neighborhood is consistently cited as unbeatable.
3. Room Quality
The 41 thoughtfully designed rooms and suites combine "retro character with modern comfort". Guests find them "super cozy and fun," "super clean," and "comfortable," often praising the bed comfort. Each room features custom vinyl tufted beds, golden wood desks, spirited touches like funky wallpaper, classic push-button phones, and vintage silkscreened music posters. Standard amenities include a flat-screen TV, telephone, desk with chair, air conditioning, and complimentary WiFi. Some larger rooms and suites may also include a daybed.
4. Dining Experience
Austin Motel shares its space with Joann's Fine Foods, a highly-regarded Tex-Mex diner and patio restaurant. Joann's offers reimagined diner classics with a Mexican influence for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Popular menu items include Wood-Grilled Fajitas, Joann's Queso, Avocado & Tuna Tartare, Tacos, Enchilada Plates, and Stone Ground Blue Corn Pancakes. The restaurant also boasts an extensive selection of tequila and mezcal, serving what many consider some of Austin's best frozen margaritas. Additionally, guests can enjoy complimentary coffee in the lobby daily. The Pool Bar and Rocky's Bar provide further options for drinks and a lively atmosphere.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Austin Motel consistently receives outstanding feedback, with high ratings for staff performance (9.5 and 9.0 out of 10). They are described as "friendly," "very helpful," "fantastic," and "welcoming," often going "above and beyond" for guests. Specific examples include staff bringing DoorDash orders to rooms late at night and leaving personalized notes for special occasions. They are also noted for providing helpful insider tips about the local area.
6. Location & Accessibility
The motel's "unbeatable location" in the "heart of South Congress" (SoCo) is a major draw. It places guests within easy walking distance of a plethora of trendy shops, diverse restaurants, lively clubs, famous murals, and coffee shops. Lady Bird Lake is a short 15-minute walk away, and iconic Austin landmarks like the bat bridge, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs Pool are also easily accessible. The Austin Convention Center is 0.9 miles away, and the State Capitol Building is 1.6 miles away. Free onsite self-parking is available, adding convenience for those with vehicles. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is approximately 6.2 miles from the property. The area is also conducive to exploring via readily available bicycles and electric scooters.
7. Value & Pricing
Austin Motel is considered to offer "unbeatable value", especially given its prime location and distinctive atmosphere. While the average room price hovers around $236, compared to the city's average of $191, rates can be found as low as $143 per night. Its "affordable, personality-drenched" appeal makes it a popular choice for travelers, with a value-for-money rating of 8.1 out of 10. Free parking is an added benefit that contributes to its perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While generally highly rated, some guests have noted recurring issues. Noise can be a concern, particularly on weekends, due to its lively South Congress location and the active pool area with events. Some reviews also mention noise from neighboring rooms. Guests occasionally express a desire for more in-room amenities, such as coffee makers and refrigerators. Although rooms are praised for their design and cleanliness, a few older reviews suggest some rooms might appear "dated" or in need of renovation. There have also been comments regarding the desire for "colder AC" in rooms. Finally, while there is a 24-hour front desk, some sources indicate "limited hours" for front desk staff, advising guests to contact the property in advance for late arrivals. Housekeeping may not be provided daily and might require guests to communicate their preferences to the staff.

The Austin Motel is a very fun stay. Located right in the middle of all the action, it’s a fun idea: an old motel converted into a nice hotel. We stayed in a king suite overlooking the pool. Not too much to look at, but is a nice room. Check-in was easy and the person who checked us in was very helpful. The room itself is somewhat basic, with a lot of fun design details that harken back to its ol...

The people who run the motel are top notch. They do a lot to keep you comfortable with sevice and amenities. It has a cool old school vibe. There is a bar in the courtyard, a heated pool, and a fantastic dinner connected to it. I will definitely be back.

Cute quirky hotel in an amazing location..with FREE parking! Location is worth it! Great price. Downside is no iron in the room or microwave. A microwave is a must for us but we survived. The front desk heated up our food for us. If you like different and unique, this is the place for you!

Only the location is worth anything. These are some of the oldest most run down rooms I have seen. Somehow they have caught the interest of the kitch crowd. Also no security cameras, truck was damaged in their parking lot after another vehicles alarm was going off at 3am and their "security team" showed up. Hyatt refused to do anything. Much nicer rooms just across the river at the same price...

I had a very disappointing experience at Austin Motel today. I was invited to participate in an ongoing drag show and was asked by the performers to simply check with the venue to be sure it was okay for me to set up a small table during the show. I spoke with the receptionist (a young woman with long black hair) and explained the situation. Instead of a simple yes or no, she went into a long, co...

We had an absolutely wonderful experience—even before we arrived! The onsite staff sent us a thoughtful text asking if there was anything they could do to make our stay special, which set a great tone. We arrived around 11 AM, and while our room wasn’t quite ready, we were offered early check-in for a small fee. Alternatively, the front desk kindly stored our luggage so we could relax by the pool...
