Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street: A Michelin One-Key Gem in Portland's West End

Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street, a Michelin Key One-Keys property, offers guests a distinctive and highly-rated experience in Portland, Maine. Housed in a beautifully renovated 1869 Victorian townhouse, this guesthouse is lauded for its unique blend of historic charm, contemporary design, and a welcoming, independent atmosphere.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "exceptional" and a "gem." It boasts an excellent overall score, reflecting high marks for cleanliness, staff and service, and facilities. The property maintains a boutique hotel feel with the warmth of a classic bed-and-breakfast.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise the guesthouse's unique character, thoughtful design, and excellent amenities.

  • Design & Ambiance: The interiors are beautifully decorated, blending modern furnishings with antiques and a pleasing, restful color scheme. Common areas, including a cozy living room with a fireplace, are designed for relaxation and socializing. The "snack closet" and complimentary pantry stocked with coffee, tea, candy, and cookies are frequently highlighted as a delightful and generous amenity. A peaceful garden and terrace also offer space for unwinding.
  • Service Model: Carleton Street operates with an "invisible service model" and online check-in, complemented by 24/7 text-line concierge support, catering to guests who prefer a more autonomous stay.
  • Location: Its prime location in Portland's historic West End neighborhood makes it highly desirable, offering easy walking access to cafes, parks, museums, and other attractions.

3. Room Quality

The six individually furnished and decorated rooms at Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street are consistently described as comfortable and stylish.

  • Comfort & Design: Rooms feature air-conditioning, premium bedding, bathrobes, and free toiletries. Guests appreciate the beautiful decoration, often noting a mix of modern and antique furnishings. Some rooms, like the "Stovall," are noted for being very spacious with large, comfortable beds and sizable bathrooms. Another room, "Nocino," offered a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, a repurposed fireplace mantel for artwork, and a large marble-tiled bathroom with a herringbone-patterned shower.
  • Amenities: Rooms are "screen-free" for a digital detox and relaxation, but offer free in-room WiFi. Basic room essentials like wine glasses, corkscrews, irons, and hairdryers are provided.

4. Dining Experience

While there's no formal restaurant or room service, the breakfast offering is a significant highlight.

  • Breakfast: Mornings at Carleton Street feature a thoughtfully curated breakfast basket delivered to the guest's door at a preferred time. This includes a rotating selection such as protein oats, Greek yogurt, or chia pudding, along with a fresh pastry and seasonal fruit. Some guests have described the breakfast as "stunning" and "generous," with a variety of fresh and delicious options, including fruits, bagels, yogurt, and spreads. Coffee and tea are available 24/7 in the dining room.
  • Pantry: The complimentary guest pantry is a major draw, offering snacks, coffee, tea, and cookies around the clock.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street is highly praised for being friendly, hospitable, and attentive, even with its independent check-in model. Staff members, like Aaron mentioned in one review, are described as fabulous and helpful. The hosts are noted for being generous and checking in with guests via text, making them feel cared for while still allowing for a sense of privacy. Concierge services are available to provide local recommendations.

6. Location & Accessibility

The guesthouse is situated at 46 Carleton Street, nestled among historic Victorian-era homes in Portland's vibrant West End neighborhood.

  • Neighborhood: It offers a tranquil residential setting while being within walking distance to a wide array of Portland's attractions, including the State Theatre, Portland Museum of Art, Victoria Mansion, and Congress Street's boutiques, cafes, and vintage markets. The historic Old Port quarter and the waterfront are also easily accessible.
  • Transport & Parking: Portland is highly walkable. For those driving, limited off-street parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis for an additional fee, with guests advised to book a spot in advance. Street parking is also generally manageable. The inn is located 1.9 miles from Portland International Jetport.
  • Accessibility Note: Due to its historic nature, the building does not have an elevator, and all guest rooms require at least one flight of stairs to access, making it unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility. There is also a threshold step at the rear entrance.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing can fluctuate based on season and booking platform, prices for a 1-night stay for two adults at Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street have been observed to start from approximately $179.00, excluding taxes and fees. Average weeknight prices can be around $304, and weekend nights around $359. February is noted as potentially the cheapest month to stay, while September can be the most expensive. Many guests feel the overall experience, including the luxurious accommodations, thoughtful amenities like the pantry, and excellent breakfast, justifies the cost.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are largely positive, a few recurring points of criticism or consideration include:

  • Accessibility: The lack of an elevator and the necessity of navigating stairs due to the historic building structure is a noted limitation for some guests.
  • Parking: While available, the limited off-street parking on a first-come, first-served basis and the need for advance booking can be a minor inconvenience, especially during high season or snowy weather.
  • Room Variation: While most rooms are praised for spaciousness, one review mentioned a bathroom being "small" despite the room being beautifully decorated. Some guests also found the beds to be softer than expected.
  • No In-Room TVs: Carleton Street rooms intentionally do not have in-room televisions, which might be a consideration for guests who prefer this amenity.

This was an overall lovely hotel. The team was lovely and very easy to communicate with. The common areas were beautiful and well designed, everything felt luxurious and inviting. I'm glad we stayed here overall but a couple of things would have made the experience better. There were a couple of black stains on our sheets that were a bit concerning. The bed we had was large but didn’t have enough...

It’s okay! Self service hotel without staff onsite - decent walk to downtown and construction all around location. For the price we paid I would have probably stayed closer to downtown if I did it again. Pack light if you stay on the 3rd floor - you are going to carry your bags up 3 flights - minimal tight parking

Lovely experience at this Inn! We stayed 2 nights to kick off our first time visit of Maine and could have not asked for a better place to do that: warm, helpful welcome from the start, great atmosphere, charming room (ours was called "Waterfront"), curated breakfast, walking distance from everything we needed... It was perfect for us. Our room was on the third floor and there is no elevator. This...

My stay at the Inn on Carlton ended up being even better than I thought it would be. My fiance and I booked a room last minute for our trip to Portland. This bed and breakfast is located on the West End of Portland and is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. It's a short walk from many good coffee places and restaurants. It's about a 25 minute walk to Downtown Portland and 45 minutes to the Ea...
