Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise the charming location, the friendly and helpful staff, and the high quality of the offerings. The exceptional dining experience, particularly the fresh seafood, is a significant draw. The cozy bar and restaurant also contribute to a memorable stay. The historical ambiance, combined with the tranquil natural surroundings, makes it a unique escape.
Room Quality
The perception of room quality at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri can vary. While some guests found their rooms to be "perfect and clean", others noted a discrepancy between online photos and the actual accommodations received. Some rooms, particularly suites, are located in a separate building that some guests felt resembled a motel, with issues like abandoned bikes in the entryway and seedy staircases. There were also complaints about certain rooms lacking windows that could be opened or central air conditioning. Some describe the rooms as "rustic and old style". The hotel offers various room categories across its different buildings, including standard rooms, superior rooms, and suites.
Dining Experience
The dining experience at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri is a major highlight and a primary reason for its Michelin recognition. The restaurant is renowned for its excellent cuisine, which relies heavily on fresh, local ingredients sourced from the surrounding generous nature, including various fish, shellfish, wild sheep, and local herbs. The kitchen is led by twin chefs Ørjan and Arnt Johannessen; Ørjan notably won the gold medal in Bocuse d'Or in 2015. The restaurant offers a sophisticated yet unpretentious dining experience. Guests frequently rave about the "exceptional" breakfast and "very good seafood." The 5-course dinner is priced around $100 per person. In 2023, Ørjan also established Mirabelle by Ørjan Johannessen, an exclusive gastronomic restaurant, further enhancing the culinary offerings.
Service & Staff
The staff at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri consistently receive high praise for their hospitality. Guests describe them as "friendly," "helpful," "caring," and "professional." The hosts, Asta and Øystein Johannessen, along with their family, are noted for their dedication to providing a welcoming experience.
Location & Accessibility
Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri is situated in the charming and tranquil fishing village of Bekkjarvik on the island of Austevoll, directly on the harbor. The location is ideal for those seeking a quiet escape amidst raw and unspoiled nature, offering opportunities for hiking on beautiful trails, exploring the coastal path, and biking around the Austevoll archipelago. Nearby attractions include Bekkjarvik Park. The hotel is easily accessible, with an express boat from Bergen taking just under an hour.
Value & Pricing
Value and pricing receive mixed feedback. While Trip.com indicates an average price from US$166 with a good value score, some guests found the prices, particularly for certain suites, to be high and not entirely justified by the experience. One reviewer reported paying $500 for a suite that felt more like a motel.
Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms include discrepancies between the hotel's online images and the actual rooms provided, with some guests feeling that certain rooms or buildings (like those described as "motel-like") did not meet expectations. Issues such as rooms lacking openable windows or central air conditioning have also been noted. Additionally, some guests mentioned that the warm items at breakfast were occasionally only tepid.

We only had dinner but it was mouth watering. The fish was cooked to perfection and the side dishes finely seasoned. Our waiter was very polite and let us enjoy our meal while being here if we needed him.

Our family travelled a long distance to visit what looked to be a beautiful hotel based upon the photos online. Unfortunately, most of the advertised pictures are part of a separate part of the hotel reserved for group bookings, and all photos are taken with an advantageous angle hiding the parking lot/road immediately in front of the rooms and restaurant. If booking a suite, take note that it’s i...
