Expert Review: Bergen Børs Hotel

Bergen Børs Hotel, a Michelin Key Selected property in Bergen, Norway, consistently receives high praise for its unique blend of historical charm and modern luxury. Housed in the city's former stock exchange, the hotel offers guests an "outstanding" and "perfect" destination experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall rating for Bergen Børs Hotel is exceptionally positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "fantastic," "outstanding," and "perfect." The hotel boasts an average rating of 9.0 on some platforms, with particularly high scores for location (9.6-9.7), staff (9.1-9.2), comfort (9.1), and cleanliness (8.7-9.0).

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Bergen Børs Hotel:

  • Location: The hotel's central position is a major draw, placing guests directly opposite the Bryggen Wharf, near the Fish Market, and just two minutes from Mount Fløyen. It's within walking distance of major attractions, the ferry, and the train station.
  • Design & Architecture: The hotel is celebrated for its special building, a glorious 19th-century Renaissance Revival structure that was once Bergen's stock exchange. The interiors beautifully blend traditional architecture with modern amenities and Scandinavian minimalism, featuring walnut wood, leather, and marble. The breakfast hall, Frescohallen, is particularly noted for its stunning frescoes and impressive surroundings.
  • Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as professional, helpful, friendly, courteous, and accommodating, often going above and beyond for guests.
  • Breakfast: The breakfast experience is consistently highlighted as excellent, great, delicious, and phenomenal, with a wide variety of choices, including hot and cold options, fresh fruit, eggs, porridge, smoked fish, and cinnamon rolls.

3. Room Quality

Bergen Børs Hotel offers 127 rooms, including 19 suites. Rooms are generally described as comfortable, clean, and well-designed, offering understated luxury. Swedish design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune incorporated "uncomplicated Scandi minimalism" with soothing greys and blues, tailored precision, and subtle details. Amenities typically include a Smart TV, Nespresso machine, minibar, and free WiFi. Some guests have noted that rooms can feel spacious, a luxury in a city hotel. However, some guest feedback mentions that rooms can be small or cramped, with some finding the decor in certain rooms dark and not to their personal style. Standard Twin rooms are around 215 sq ft (20 sq m), while Superior rooms are 21-26 sq m. Loft rooms, while unique, have also been cited for low beams that some guests have accidentally hit their heads on. Minor complaints include sometimes subdued lighting and limited storage space. The hotel also has 13 rooms specially adapted for guests with mobility issues.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel boasts three on-site restaurants: Frescohallen, Fresquito, and Bare.

  • Frescohallen: This stunning triple-height space, adorned with large frescoes, serves the highly-rated buffet breakfast. It's also praised for its wonderful dinner.
  • Bare: This restaurant has earned Bergen its first Michelin star, known for its locally sourced Nordic cuisine.
  • Fresquito: Offers Spanish flavors and is described as Bergen's liveliest place for Spanish cuisine.
  • Speilbaren: The hotel's newest bar concept on the third floor offers cocktails, local beers, and an exclusive snack menu.

Breakfast, included in the stay, is served in Frescohallen from 7:00-10:00 on weekdays and 8:00-11:00 on weekends. It offers continental, vegetarian, vegan, and buffet options.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Bergen Børs Hotel are consistently lauded for their exceptional service. Guests describe them as professional, helpful, friendly, courteous, and accommodating from arrival to departure. They are known for providing useful local recommendations, assisting with travel arrangements, and generally ensuring a comfortable stay. For early departures, staff have even packed snack boxes for guests.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is considered "perfect" and "amazing," situated in the heart of Bergen's city center. It is steps away from the Fish Market, Torgallmenningen (the main square), Xhibition Mall, and Galleriet Shopping Centre. Key attractions like the Bryggen Waterfront and Mount Fløyen (via the funicular) are easily accessible on foot.

Public transportation is highly convenient, with Byparken Station just a 4-minute walk and Nonneseteren Station a 7-minute walk away. The Bergen Train Station is also nearby (approximately 600 meters), offering connections to other cities and the airport. The airport express bus stops at the Fish Market, only about 100 meters from the hotel.

While the hotel has 13 rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility and includes an elevator, some public areas might be tricky for wheelchair users due to the building's age and layout. Access to reception can also be challenging for those with heavy luggage or bad knees.

7. Value & Pricing

With an average room price around $301, compared to Bergen's city average of $172, Bergen Børs Hotel is considered a luxury option. However, many guests feel it offers "exceptional value for money" for the high-quality amenities, service, and unique experience it provides. Prices can vary significantly based on the season, with January being the cheapest month and June the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms include:

  • Room Size and Decor: Some guests found standard rooms to be small or cramped, and the dark grey and black decor in certain rooms was not to everyone's taste.
  • Bed Comfort: A few guests have mentioned that the beds and pillows were not as comfortable as other hotels they've experienced.
  • Loft Room Beams: Guests staying in top-floor loft rooms reported hitting their heads on the low beams.
  • Minor Amenities: Occasional small gripes include water not being replaced daily, lack of milk for in-room tea/coffee (though provided upon request), and non-functional USB chargers.
  • Gym: The gym has been described as a "little disappointing for a hotel of this level."
  • Accessibility: While adapted rooms exist, navigating public areas in a wheelchair might be challenging due to the historic building's layout. Access to reception might also be difficult for those with mobility issues or heavy luggage.

We stayed at Bergen Børs Hotel for one night after taking the overnight train from Oslo, arriving around 6:30 am. We were tired, hungry, and fully expecting to have to kill time before check-in—but the front desk staff couldn’t have been more helpful. They got all three of our rooms ready early, without hesitation. That alone set the tone for a great stay. The hotel is right in the heart of Berge...

The rooms are noticeably more spacious than what you typically find in Bergen, and the service has been consistently excellent. Breakfast is great, and the restaurant area has a really impressive atmosphere filled with art and cultural touches. The staff are friendly and helpful, and overall it’s been a high-quality, enjoyable stay.

Great location and friendly staff. The room was good, it was warm but window could open so that was fine. I think the hotel was hosting a party so there was alot of noise even with earplugs. After the party the people were in front of the hotel talking and laughing for hours… I saw the clock st 04:30. Breakfast was okay, lots of stuff but nothing to write home about.

I booked two rooms for two family. The rooms are very small like a hostel room. I saw a priced water in minibar at the first time on my visits. Heating isn't good. Restaurant designed very well but breakfast hasn't much choices.

Lovely hotel in the center of Bergen’s bustling waterfront area. It is quite unique being a former stock exchange building. The staff were super helpful and accommodating in answering all of our questions and making reservations for dinner on request. Our room was spacious and had all the amenities we needed for a comfortable stay.
