Expert Review: Baja Club

Baja Club, a Michelin Key Selected property in La Paz, Mexico, offers a distinctive blend of historic charm and contemporary luxury, generally receiving positive, though sometimes mixed, guest feedback.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Baja Club leans towards a highly positive experience, with many guests describing it as "soothing, relaxing, polished and elevated". The hotel boasts an impressive "Guest Score & Reviews" of 18.8 out of 20 on the Michelin Guide, reflecting strong satisfaction. However, some recent reviews indicate a decline in maintenance and service, leading to a feeling that the hotel "doesn't live up to the cost" for some guests.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of Baja Club:

  • Design: The hotel masterfully integrates a renovated 1910 colonial-style villa with a new four-story extension, creating a unique "marriage of classic luxury and contemporary design". The architecture by Max Von Werz and interior design by Jaune Studio are frequently lauded, with an "urban sophistication meets seaside relaxation" vibe. The internal courtyard and ruin-chic swimming pool are particularly noted for their aesthetic appeal.
  • Location: Its prime spot directly on the Malecón, La Paz's seafront promenade, is a significant draw, offering easy access to restaurants, shops, and stunning views of the Sea of Cortez. It's considered to be in "the best part of the Malecon".
  • Amenities: The rooftop bar with sunset views over the Sea of Cortez is a major highlight. The hotel also features a pool, spa with sauna, steam room, massage treatment rooms, and a hot tub, as well as a library and garden. Free WiFi and free parking are also provided.
  • Vibe: Many appreciate the "soothing, so relaxing but still polished and elevated" atmosphere.

3. Room Quality

Baja Club offers 32 rooms, including seven suites, described as "super sleek and fresh yet cozy". The design incorporates simple local and Mexican materials, providing a richness in colors, textures, and shades. Available room types include Garden, Patio, Balcony, Balcony Double, Junior Suite, Terrace Suite, and Top Suite, ranging from approximately 28 to 100 square meters. Many rooms feature balconies or private patios, some with ocean views. Guests often find the beds very comfortable.

However, some recent feedback points to issues with room quality. One guest in November 2025 noted that their room felt "tired and dirty around the edges" and mentioned a soft, old bed and a slight odor in the bathroom. Another reported problems with hot water and a non-functioning bathroom outlet, requiring an extension cord.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant offers a daily changing menu with a "Greek interpretation of local produce and flavors," including fresh fish. Guests can dine in the unpretentious dining room, under a vine-wound pergola in the main patio, or on the rooftop.

  • Breakfast: A continental breakfast is usually included, featuring coffee, fresh juice, fruit, Greek yogurt, granola, and a sweet roll. Additional items like chilaquiles and omelets are available to order. While the quality of the food is often a highlight, some guests have noted that breakfast service can be slow.
  • Rooftop Bar: The rooftop bar is highly recommended for sunset views over the Sea of Cortez and serves local natural wines and creative cocktails. However, drink choices have been described as "surprisingly predictable," and service can sometimes be lax.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is varied. Many guests describe the service and attention to detail as "outstanding" and staff as "friendly faces everywhere". The front desk staff has been praised for being helpful.

Conversely, some recent reviews highlight significant service issues. One guest in late 2024 reported "the worst service and issues I've ever had," including unfriendly and unhelpful staff, and noted that housekeeping was not helpful and did not do a good job. Another mentioned "real bad" reception service, even via WhatsApp, and a lack of empathy or smiles from the reception staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

Baja Club is ideally situated on the Malecón in the historic center of La Paz, placing guests within walking distance of numerous restaurants, shops, and local art by Mexican and international artists. The capital of Baja California Sur is known for its safety and attracts domestic visitors.

Beyond the immediate vicinity, the hotel's location offers easy access to various attractions and activities, such as swimming with whale sharks, visiting Isla Espíritu Santo, and exploring the Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur. Boat tour meetup points for activities like whale watching or trips to Espiritu Santo Island are less than a mile away.

The hotel is committed to accessibility, offering accessible rooms with grab bars and roll-in showers, and ensuring common areas like the restaurant, lobby, and rooftop bar are easily navigable for guests with mobility challenges.

7. Value & Pricing

Baja Club is often described as offering "great value for your money," providing "luxury service and high end design at honest, affordable rates". A one-night stay for two adults in late January 2026 was priced around $320.25, excluding taxes and fees. Room rates can vary significantly, with Garden Rooms starting around $450 per night and Top Suites reaching over $1,100 per night.

However, some recent reviews suggest that the hotel may be "overpriced for what they offer" and "doesn't live up to the cost," especially considering reported issues with room maintenance and service.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Maintenance and Upkeep: Several recent guests have mentioned that the property is "a bit neglected" and in need of upkeep and repairs, with complaints about old or damaged towels, and general cleanliness in bathrooms.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Despite some praise, other guests have experienced unhelpful or unfriendly staff, particularly at reception, and slow service at breakfast and the rooftop bar.
  • Room Issues: Specific complaints include uncomfortable or old beds, lack of hot water, non-functioning outlets, and issues with air conditioning.
  • Pool Shade: The swimming pool is noted to be in the shade for most of the day, making it less ideal for sunbathing and resulting in cold water.
  • Dining Value: While the food quality is generally good, the restaurant has been described as "overpriced and mediocre food" by some.
  • Toiletries: One suggestion for improvement was to switch from small plastic toiletry containers to large refillable bottles.

Our stay at The Baja Club was a major disappointment and we would not recommend the hotel at all. The negative reviews on Google and Booking made us hesitate, still we decided to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt - what a mistake. Yes, the design is beautiful. The location on the Malecón is great. But that’s where the positives end. During our entire stay, the annual Carnival took place di...

Baja Club was a beautiful modern hotel that we mostly enjoyed. Everyone was very friendly and helped out with what we needed and valet parking was awesome. The room was stylish and welcoming and we had a great time relaxing it it. The rooftop was a great place to grab a drink. The only part that surprised us that despite being significantly more expensive than the other hotel we stayed at, at Baja...

Overall, this hotel charges luxury prices for a very disappointing, uncomfortable stay. I would not return. If you care at all about having a spacious room with quality finishes, find another hotel in the area. The hotel was not full it was a Monday night and there were clearly unused rooms available. Yet, they made us wait and were given a room that was first-floor unit exposed to the courtyard...

We followed a friend’s recommendation and Baja Club did not disappoint. Excellent and thought through design, professional and very friendly staff everywhere. Very clean, good sized and comfortable rooms. Food & drink quality is outstanding. Location directly at the boardwalk and the rooftop is perfect for stunning sunsets. We will be back!

Cute hotel. But A LOT OF mosquitos 🦟 pool is small though good looking Also, even it’s affiliated with Marriott. It doesn’t have any of the Marriott benefits like late checkout or night upgrade. Be careful if you are expecting to get these
