Expert Review: Amanjiwo

Amanjiwo, a prestigious Michelin Key Three-Keys property located near Yogyakarta, Indonesia, consistently garners exceptional reviews for its profound integration with the local culture and breathtaking natural surroundings. Guests frequently describe their stay as an "unforgettable" and "magical" experience, highlighting a unique blend of luxury and authentic Javanese charm.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Amanjiwo consistently receives stellar ratings from guests, with scores as high as 9.9/10 on Trip.com and 19.5/20 on Tablet Hotels, reflecting an overwhelmingly positive sentiment. The general consensus is that Amanjiwo offers an outstanding blend of quality, comfort, and an immersive cultural experience, often exceeding expectations set by other luxury resorts.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by several standout features:

  • Design & Ambiance: The resort's architecture is a magnificent reflection of traditional Javanese design, featuring a central circular pavilion and bell-shaped rotunda crafted from local paras yogya limestone, echoing the nearby Borobudur temple. This temple-like structure and serene ambiance are frequently lauded.
  • Location & Views: Its elevated position offers sublime, panoramic views of the Kedu Plain, surrounding volcanoes (Sumbing, Sundoro, Merbabu, and Merapi), and, most notably, the ancient Borobudur monument itself, which appears like a "mystical symbolic mirage."
  • Service Excellence: The incredibly attentive and personalized service is a recurring highlight, with staff often remembering guest preferences and addressing them by name.
  • Cultural Immersion: Amanjiwo excels in offering authentic cultural experiences, from gamelan performances and traditional Javanese dance to village cycling tours and special dinners in local farmhouses.
  • Amenities: The "endlessly long and luscious" 40-meter swimming pool, set amidst tropical exotica, and ample indoor and outdoor lounge spaces are highly appreciated.

3. Room Quality

The suites at Amanjiwo are described as luxurious, spacious (each 243 sqm/2,615 sqft), and timelessly traditional. They feature a throne-like, four-pillared king bed on a raised plinth, high-domed ceilings, and are furnished with local materials such as sungkai wooden screens, coconut wood, and rattan. Each suite includes an outdoor sunken bathtub, often stocked with fresh candles, offering a serene way to unwind. While rooms are kept in good condition despite the property's age, some older Amans, including Amanjiwo, could benefit from bathroom upgrades like rain showers, as current showers sometimes have inconsistent pressure and temperature. There are no TVs in the suites by design to limit modern intrusion, though one can be delivered upon request.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Amanjiwo is considered a wonderful experience, set in an outstanding open-air atrium or by the poolside with panoramic views. The menu offers a blend of exceptional Indonesian and Western cuisine, with a strong emphasis on local dishes. Breakfast is an "amazing," refined à la carte affair with many choices, often enjoyed poolside, and includes fresh fruit, home-blended muesli, yogurt, and local spices and herbs. Special dining experiences like the "Makan Malan Javanese evening meal" and private dinners at a local farmhouse (Pak Bilal's) are frequently highlighted as rich, taste-imbued, and deeply memorable occasions, often accompanied by live gamelan music and traditional Javanese dance. While Indonesian cuisine generally receives high praise, some guests have noted inconsistencies with the quality of Western dishes and instances of overcooked beef. Alcohol, though pricey due to Indonesian duties, is available with a selection of respectable wines.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Amanjiwo is consistently lauded as "impeccable," "world-class," and "10/10." Staff members are described as incredibly friendly, attentive, and proactive, anticipating guest needs without being intrusive. Many employees have worked at the hotel for 10-20 years, contributing to their deep knowledge of the area and genuine care for guests. Personal touches like daily turndown gifts and seamless airport transfers, including customs assistance and roadside greetings with refreshments, further enhance the experience. The hotel's "magical" housekeeping service ensures rooms are serviced every time guests leave, often without ever seeing the staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

Amanjiwo is strategically located in a natural amphitheater on the fringes of Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering unparalleled views and access to the monument. It is about a 75-minute drive from Adisucipto International Airport (Yogyakarta) and a two-hour drive from Solo airport, with complimentary airport transfers provided. The resort is nestled amidst a lush volcanic landscape, surrounded by traditional villages and terraced rice paddies. While remote, the hotel facilitates numerous cultural and archaeological excursions, including sunrise or sunset visits to Borobudur (though sunrise can be crowded), visits to Prambanan temple, village cycling tours to local craft producers, and guided hikes.

7. Value & Pricing

Amanjiwo is undeniably a luxury property, with rates typically ranging from approximately $1,050 to over $1,450 per night, depending on the room type and season. Despite the high price point, many guests consider it an "excellent value for money" due to the exceptional comfort, world-class service, and unique, immersive experiences it provides. The "Aman experience," characterized by attention to detail and an infusion of local culture, is often cited as justifying the cost.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some minor criticisms and recurring issues have been noted by guests:

  • Gym Facilities: The gym is relatively small and requires reservations.
  • Spa Facilities: Despite its focus on wellbeing, Amanjiwo does not feature a standalone, full-service spa center, with treatments often taking place in-suite or in a specially designed spa suite.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi in rooms can be inconsistent and slow, though it generally works better in the lobby areas.
  • Bathroom Amenities: The shower heads have been mentioned as sometimes lacking good pressure or consistent temperature control, and some guests desired a rain shower.
  • Dining Consistency: While local cuisine is highly praised, the quality of Western food can be inconsistent, and beef dishes have sometimes been overcooked.
  • Communication: Occasional communication issues with phone operators and some restaurant servers due to varying English fluency have been reported.
  • Limited On-Site Activities: For longer stays (e.g., beyond three nights), some guests felt there weren't enough on-site activities to prevent "stir-crazy" feelings, suggesting it's best for those seeking relaxation and cultural immersion rather than constant activity.
  • Borobudur Crowds: While access to Borobudur is excellent, sunrise visits can be crowded due to general tourism.

My partner and I had a great time over Xmas at this beautiful property. Most importantly it was the lovely staff and people that made the experience wonderful! I’d like to commend Miss Vanda (?) (pardon if I spelled her name wrongly) for her effort to address my name directly at breakfast always! We hope to be back again ^_^

We had dinner after visiting Borbudur. Amazing food, pricy for Indonesian standard but completly worth it. The thai springrolls were unimpressive but that is the only negative I can say. The rest was SUPERB including the staff. An experience!

I first visited Amanjiwo with my family back in the early 2000s, and even then it left an unforgettable mark. I returned again in the middle of the pandemic, and the magic was still the same — timeless, serene, and almost spiritual. Amanjiwo is not just a resort — it’s a sanctuary, an experience, and pure magic in the heart of Central Java 🌸🌿. Nestled in a natural amphitheater facing Borobudur,...
