Expert Review: Amanemu
Amanemu, nestled in Japan's picturesque Ise-Shima National Park, stands as a distinguished three-Michelin Key property, offering a contemporary take on the traditional Japanese ryokan experience with its focus on luxury and thermal hot springs.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Amanemu is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as extraordinary, amazing, and incredibly zen. It's widely regarded as a tranquil retreat, offering a luxurious escape into nature, and often considered one of Japan's best luxury hotels. However, a recurring sentiment acknowledges that its secluded location means it's best suited for those seeking peace, quiet, and relaxation, rather than extensive activities.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of Amanemu:
- Design & Ambiance: The architecture by Kerry Hill is a contemporary interpretation of Minka buildings, using light Japanese timbers and offering an understated simplicity that fosters tranquility. The property maximizes views of Ago Bay and the surrounding forests.
- Spa & Onsen: The spectacular 2,000 sq m Aman Spa, centered on Japan's onsen tradition, is a major draw. It features a large onsen with natural mineral-rich waters, private onsen pavilions, a watsu pool, and a glass-walled yoga studio. Soaking in the onsen pools is often described as blissful.
- Room Quality & Comfort: Rooms are consistently highlighted as beautiful, spacious, and comfortable, featuring private onsen baths.
- Service: While some note minor inconsistencies, the service is generally described as excellent, attentive, and enthusiastic, reflecting the high standards expected from Aman properties and Japanese hospitality.
- Food Quality: The dining experience receives high marks for its delicious Japanese and Western cuisine.
3. Room Quality
Amanemu comprises 24 suites and four two-bedroom villas, all designed with a modern yet traditional Japanese aesthetic. Rooms are spacious, with entry-level Mori Rooms offering views of Ago Bay. The suites, like the Nagi or Sora Suites, are gorgeous, featuring beautiful wood finishes, soft beds, and thoughtful amenities like heated floors. Each suite is enormous, around 1065 square feet, with an open-plan bedroom and living area, including daybeds, a dining table, and a desk.
A significant highlight of the rooms is the private onsen bath. Bathrooms are large, with double sinks, walk-in showers, and generously sized bathtubs that can be filled with natural thermal spring water. Guests appreciate the privacy and the ability to enjoy the onsen experience within their own space. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors with woven textiles allow for natural light and views while maintaining privacy. Complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic mini-bar drinks are also appreciated.
4. Dining Experience
Amanemu features one main restaurant that serves delicious Japanese and Western cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The culinary approach is often based on the Japanese concept of 'omakase,' where chefs create daily changing menus using fresh local produce. Matsusaka Wagyu beef, a highly acclaimed variety from the region, is a recommended specialty. Breakfast, particularly the Japanese option, is frequently praised for its quality, selection, and beautiful presentation. Dinner courses are also noted as solid.
While the food is objectively very good, some guests staying for longer durations (e.g., four nights) have expressed a desire for more variety, suggesting that dining options can become a bit monotonous due to the lack of other restaurants in the immediate area. Some reviews also noted a somber mood in the restaurant due to a lack of ambient music and overly serious service.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Amanemu generally meets the high standards expected of an Aman property and Japanese hospitality. Staff are described as enthusiastic, professional, kind, and genuinely wanting to do a great job. Guests often highlight the staff's attention to detail, their pleasant and positive personalities, and their ability to anticipate needs, all in a non-intrusive manner. Personal touches, such as knowing guest preferences (e.g., drinks) and referring to guests by name, are noted. The general manager, Mrs. Hisayo Shimizu, has been particularly praised for her commitment to guests.
However, some guests have noted minor inconsistencies compared to other Aman resorts, such as being asked for their room number more frequently or housekeeping not always refreshing the room unseen. There were also mentions of service not always being proactive in certain areas, like the bar. Despite these minor points, the overall sentiment towards service remains very positive.
6. Location & Accessibility
Amanemu is located in Shima, Mie Prefecture, within the Ise-Shima National Park, overlooking Ago Bay. Its location is described as peaceful, secluded, and immersed in nature, offering a respite from urban hustle. The resort is on a verdant hill, providing lovely views.
Accessibility involves a journey, typically a two-hour direct train ride from Nagoya to Kashikojima station, followed by a complimentary 20-minute limousine transfer from the hotel. Osaka and Kyoto are 2.5 and 3 hours away by train, respectively. Nagoya Chubu International Airport is the closest airport, about a three-hour drive or a 25-minute helicopter ride away.
While the resort itself offers plenty for relaxation, guests seeking external activities should be aware that many attractions require some travel. Nearby cultural treasures include the Ise Grand Shrine, Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine (about a 50-minute drive, with private tours available), and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes (a three-and-a-half-hour drive). The hotel also offers activities like golf at Nemu Golf Club, fishing trips, and visits with 'ama' (female divers). Complimentary bikes are available for exploring the resort grounds and beyond.
7. Value & Pricing
Amanemu is undeniably a high-end luxury property, and its pricing reflects that. Rates typically start around $1,000 per night, although benefits like "fourth night free" programs can bring the average down. Guests consistently acknowledge that it is "extremely expensive" but often conclude that the unique Japanese experience, especially the private onsen and tranquil setting, makes it worthwhile for those who can afford it. Many feel that if you are looking for peace, quiet, beautiful mountain settings, great views, and excellent service, it offers good value for that specific experience. Virtuoso benefits, such as upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and food & beverage credits, can enhance the value.
8. Common Complaints
While highly praised, Amanemu does have some recurring criticisms:
- Remote Location and Limited Activities: This is the most frequent "complaint," often framed as a preference rather than a true flaw. For some, the seclusion means there isn't much to do beyond relaxing at the resort, which can lead to boredom on longer stays (e.g., beyond 2-3 nights).
- Dining Variety: While the food quality is excellent, the limited number of dining options at the resort can lead to a lack of variety for guests staying multiple nights, as most meals are taken on-site due to the remote location.
- Cost of Activities: Some guests have found the pricing for activities offered by the resort to be "outrageous."
- Service Inconsistencies: Compared to the legendary service of other Aman properties, some reviewers have noted less proactive service or minor lapses, such as being asked for a room number or housekeeping not being entirely discreet.
- Lack of Ambiance in Dining: The absence of music or ambient noise in the restaurant and bar can sometimes create a "somber mood."
- Accessibility: While transfers are complimentary, the journey to Amanemu can be a significant "trek" for some, involving multiple train changes if coming from further afield.

Amore
A beautiful and peaceful onsen resort. It's not a traditional Ryokan. All rooms are villa. It's environment is very feel like staying in the tent in Africa except you can walk around. I'm impressed with the outdoor spa. However I don't suggest bringing kids. All staff very friendly but not all speaks English. Only thing is the spending is a bit high comparing with other luxury Ryokan.

I stayed 2 nights in Amanemu for ferrari driving tours. Super service, nice room condition and I really could feel the healing inside the resort. Since I spent most of the time driving outside the room because of the driving tour schedule, I personally felt to visit again in the future by myself just to relax inside the hotel.
