Expert Review: Zank by Toque Hotel
Zank by Toque Hotel in Salvador, Brazil, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a blend of modern design and personalized service in the lively Rio Vermelho neighborhood. While often praised for its stunning aesthetics and dedicated staff, recent guest feedback highlights significant concerns regarding ongoing construction and property maintenance.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for Zank by Toque Hotel is largely positive, reflected in strong average ratings: 8.1 on Booking.com, 8.4 on Agoda, and an impressive 18.7/20 for Overall Experience from the Michelin Guide. Guests frequently commend the hotel's elegance, comfort, and the exceptional hospitality of its staff. However, recent reviews reveal a polarization in sentiment, with some guests expressing severe disappointment due to ongoing construction and a perceived decline in property condition.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Zank by Toque Hotel:
- Exceptional Service: The staff receives widespread praise for being helpful, friendly, attentive, and going "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable stay.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's stylish, modern, and minimalist design, often featuring artwork by Brazilian artists, is a significant draw.
- Rooftop Terrace & Pool: The infinity plunge pool and rooftop terrace offer stunning ocean views, providing a tranquil escape.
- Spa Services: The Drika Saad Spa, offering massages, body scrubs, and body treatments, along with a sauna, hot tub, and steam room, is a valued amenity.
- Location in Rio Vermelho: Positioned in an upscale neighborhood known for its dining and vibrant beachfront area, the location is appealing to many.
3. Room Quality
The hotel offers 15 to 20 "apartments" or rooms, split between an original historic building and an adjoining structure. Rooms are described as thoughtfully designed, featuring crisp all-white decor, shiny hardwood floors, contemporary furniture, and blindingly white Egyptian cotton linens. King-size beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs with cable channels, and minibars are standard. Private bathrooms come with separate toilets and showers, hairdryers, and free toiletries, with "Classe" rooms additionally offering bathtubs. Many guests have described their rooms as "SPECTACULAR."
However, more recent feedback indicates that some rooms are beginning to feel "run down" or "old and worn down," lacking renovation. Issues such as weak Wi-Fi and occasional bathroom leakages have also been reported.
4. Dining Experience
The on-site Toque Restaurante serves international cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a focus on dressed-up versions of local Salvadoran dishes, particularly seafood, rice, and coconut. The daily breakfast is consistently praised as "good" or "perfect" by many guests. In-room breakfast is also available. The poolside bar offers ocean views, perfect for a relaxing drink. Despite general satisfaction, some recent guests found the food quality to be merely "ok" or not "great."
5. Service & Staff
The service at Zank by Toque Hotel is frequently highlighted as a major strength. Guests consistently praise the staff as "wonderful, helpful, friendly, and attentive," often noting their willingness to go "above and beyond." Many appreciate that some staff members are fluent in English. The hotel also provides a 24-hour front desk. Conversely, a few recent reviews report "unfriendly and incompetent staff," a notable departure from the overwhelmingly positive feedback in this area.
6. Location & Accessibility
Located in the upscale Rio Vermelho neighborhood, Zank by Toque Hotel is situated on a quiet hill next to a lively beachfront area. It offers easy access to local attractions like Rio Vermelho Beach and Paciencia Beach, both within a short walk. The area boasts numerous dining venues within walking distance. For travelers looking to avoid the bustling historic center of Pelourinho, Rio Vermelho offers a stylish alternative.
While the location is generally well-regarded, guests should be aware that the hotel is on a rather steep hill, which can make walks to the beach or market taxing, particularly for individuals with mobility issues. Uber is readily available and affordable for transport. The hotel is approximately 20-25 km (27-35 minutes drive) from Luis Eduardo Magalhães Airport.
7. Value & Pricing
Zank by Toque Hotel is positioned as a luxurious 5-star boutique hotel. While an average room price of around $134 has been cited as "exceptional value" compared to the city's average, individual prices can vary, with some bookings found starting at approximately $156.49 for a night. However, some guests have felt that the property is "overpriced" given its current condition, especially in light of recent complaints.
8. Common Complaints
The most significant and recurring complaint among recent guests is the presence of a large, active construction site directly next to the hotel. This construction has reportedly led to:
- Blocked Sea Views: Many rooms advertised with sea views now have them completely obstructed.
- Noise and Dust: The construction generates considerable noise and dust, particularly on weekdays, impacting guest comfort and tranquility. Guests have expressed feeling misled by marketing materials that do not disclose this issue.
- Property Decline: Beyond the construction, several guests have noted that the hotel "feels run down" and "very old and worn down," with a lack of attention to detail and renovation.
- Thin Walls: Some guests have reported that the walls are "super thin," leading to noise transfer between rooms.
- Weak Wi-Fi: Inconsistent or weak Wi-Fi signals in rooms have also been mentioned.

Staff were amazing and welcoming. From the cleaning team to the receptionists who were both helpful to the breakfast and dinner staff. Great meals at the restaurant. There were a lot of ants in the room and it could do with some improvement (we had a torn curtain). Even with the ongoing construction we still had a lovely time. Also had the best massage from Ione, her hands were healing. Coming fro...

Hotel Zank deliberately tries to hide the fact that there is a construction next door. The noise and dust are unbearable. The sea view I paid for does not exist. Please see the pictures I took. Staff is unfriendly and incompetent. Avoid at all costs.

Zank is a wonderful upscale boutique hotel in the Bohemian neighborhood of Rio Vermelho in Salvador, perched on a terraced hill, the view is amazing! Service is excellent, with only 20 rooms, it allows you and the hospitality staff to connect. It feels very stylish, comfortable and modern. There is a roof top pool for sunbathing and taking in the view of the ocean. Zank's location puts you just a...

A lovely hotel nestled in a hill just above the sea. Friendly, well-priced. Great breakfasts, and good restaurant. You're a three minute walk from a great little cove, and right on the edge of the lively Vermelho neighborhood. Other local highlights are the Casa de Lemanja temple, and Casa Theresa, a place devoted to Brazilian specialties. Swimming is wonderful. 15 minute or less drive too just ab...

The hotel consists of two buildings: a classic mansion over 100 years old; and a modern building in the back where most of the rooms are located. All the rooms have incredible views of the Bay of All Saints. Although they are not so large, the hotel offers several areas to relax and chill. The pool is a bit small, but large enough to enjoy the view. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
