Expert Review: Widmann's Löwen
Widmann's Löwen in Königsbronn, Germany, recognized as a One-Key property by the Michelin Guide, is a highly regarded family-run hotel nestled in the scenic Swabian Alb countryside. It offers a unique blend of traditional charm and contemporary luxury, particularly appealing to those seeking a culinary experience and tranquil getaway.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Widmann's Löwen generally receives overwhelmingly positive feedback, with guests frequently rating it as "Excellent" or "Fabulous". It holds an average score of 8.7 out of 10 based on hundreds of reviews. On other platforms, it maintains a strong 8.9/10 rating, with 100% of guests recommending it for future stays. The Michelin Guide itself describes it as "A very special stay".
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise Widmann's Löwen for several standout features. The exceptional breakfast, featuring a wide selection of regional and organic products, is a recurring highlight. The warm and professional service provided by the friendly staff also receives high commendation. The hotel's unique design, blending classic mountain lodge inspiration with modern aesthetics, creates an inviting atmosphere. The presence of a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant, Ursprung, and a charming beer garden are also significant draws. Additionally, the hotel offers luxurious chalets equipped with private saunas for an elevated experience. Free parking and complimentary Wi-Fi are practical amenities appreciated by guests.
3. Room Quality
The hotel offers a variety of accommodations, including country-style rooms, some decorated in an alpine style, and modern rooms in the main building. Guests describe the rooms as beautiful, comfortable, and impeccably clean. Standard room amenities include a TV, minibar, and a bathroom with a hairdryer. Many rooms offer views of the large garden and surrounding countryside. For those seeking more luxury, the two brand-new chalets provide private saunas, rain showers, fireplaces, and wine cabinets, embodying "pure contemporary luxury". While most rooms are well-appointed, one guest noted an "older, not renovated" room was still "okay for the price". Beds are generally comfortable, though one review mentioned them as "hard".
4. Dining Experience
Widmann's Löwen boasts two distinct dining options. The main "Widmann's Löwen" restaurant serves regional dishes in a cozy setting with a traditional tiled stove and a pleasant beer garden. The gourmet restaurant "Ursprung," led by Chef Andreas Widmann (8th generation), holds both a Michelin Star and a Green Michelin Star for its elevated take on traditional regional flavors and commitment to sustainability. Ursprung offers creative cuisine with a focus on local ingredients, providing à la carte options, Swabian classics like Maultaschen and Zwiebelrostbraten, and multi-course menus, including vegetarian choices.
Breakfast is a major highlight, consistently praised as "amazing," "excellent," and "delicious". Guests appreciate the healthy and wide variety of options, including fresh organic products, a fresh juice corner, high-quality regional cheeses, local trout, honey, and excellent bread. Freshly prepared eggs are also available upon request.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Widmann's Löwen is frequently highlighted as a strength, with staff described as "very friendly," "attentive," "helpful," and "professional" by numerous guests. Both receptionists and waitresses receive specific praise for their hospitality. While the vast majority of feedback is positive, a few isolated comments mentioned staff appearing "stressed and overwhelmed" or offering a "sober reception" during busy periods.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel enjoys an idyllic and quiet location in the Swabian Alb countryside, on the outskirts of Königsbronn, approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) from the town center and 8 km (5 miles) from Heidenheim. It's an excellent base for outdoor activities, with many hiking trails directly across the road. Other activities like skiing and tennis are also accessible nearby. Nearby attractions include Wental, Brenzursprung, Felsenmeer Wental, and Königsbronn Abbey, all within a short distance. The hotel provides free public parking on-site and even offers charging points for electric vehicles. The nearest train stations are Königsbronn (6.2 km) and Itzelberg (6.8 km). While some areas, like the restaurant, are wheelchair accessible, the hotel is not universally described as barrier-free.
7. Value & Pricing
Guests generally perceive Widmann's Löwen to offer good "value for money," scoring 8.8 on Booking.com. It is considered to provide "dependable comfort and value". Pricing varies based on room type and dates, with a standard room potentially starting around €57 per night and a deluxe room at €185 per night. The hotel has a child-friendly policy, with children aged 0-4 staying free, and specific charges for older children. Special packages, such as a "Gourmet-Arrangement" including a 5-course menu, aperitif, a night in a double room, and breakfast, are available for approximately €450 for two people.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted by guests. One guest mentioned a key safe for late check-in being difficult to open. The presence of a strong room scent in the hallway was noted as something to "get used to" by another. An issue with room temperature being too high despite heating being off and windows open was also reported. One of the few decent restaurants in the area that is open on a Sunday evening. Decent food but gets very busy early in the evening. Be sure to reserve in advance

Quiet and comfortable. If you need to relax this place is perfect. For breakfast you can have a large selection of homemade products. I enjoyed the freshly baked Brezel and the local cheeses.
