Expert Review: Tschuggen Grand Hotel
The Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, a Michelin Two-Keys property, consistently garners high praise for its exceptional luxury, stunning design, and comprehensive amenities, establishing itself as a premier alpine destination in Switzerland.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for the Tschuggen Grand Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as luxurious, exceptional, and one of the best hotels they have ever experienced. It is considered a true alpine hideaway that offers a unique and memorable stay.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several standout features:
- Service & Hospitality: The staff are frequently lauded for their excellent, attentive, friendly, welcoming, and respectful service, making guests feel "treated like gold."
- Location & Accessibility: Its spectacular alpine setting at 1800 meters above sea level, coupled with direct ski-in/ski-out access via its unique private funicular, the "Tschuggen Express," is a major draw.
- Design & Architecture: The hotel boasts sublime interiors by designer Carlo Rampazzi, characterized by contemporary style, rich fabrics, and often vibrant colors. The Tschuggen Bergoase Spa, a 5000 square meter wellness oasis designed by renowned architect Mario Botta, is a highlight with its futuristic glass sails, alpine granite, and maple wood construction.
- Amenities: The Bergoase Spa offers an extensive range of facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths, and treatment rooms. The private Tschuggen Express is a significant advantage, providing direct access to the Arosa-Lenzerheide ski and hiking area in under four minutes. Other amenities include multiple restaurants, a health club, a free children's club, free shuttle service, ski storage, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
3. Room Quality
The hotel offers 128 rooms and suites, including new Mountain Loft accommodations. Designed by Carlo Rampazzi, the rooms are described as spacious with large, comfortable beds, ample storage, and expansive windows that offer "spellbinding" views of the Arosa mountains, forest, or the striking sails of the Bergoase spa. Guests appreciate the contemporary style, luxurious bathrooms often featuring rain showers, and amenities such as a mini-bar (often complimentary and replenished), Nespresso coffee machines, flat-screen TVs, and DVD players.
4. Dining Experience
The Tschuggen Grand Hotel provides a diverse and high-quality culinary experience across its four to five restaurants.
- La Brezza: This award-winning restaurant holds two Michelin stars and 19 GaultMillau points under Chef Marco Campanella, offering modern gourmet cuisine with options for traditional Swiss/Italian and plant-based dishes.
- Grand Restaurant: Features a daily changing menu with a newly extended window front providing excellent mountain views.
- La Collina: Known for its international cuisine and a sunny terrace.
- The Basement: Offers a warm, relaxed atmosphere with "grandmother's recipes," honest and regional cuisine, and a close collaboration with local producers. It also includes a bowling alley, adding a fun, casual element to dining.
Breakfast is particularly lauded as "amazing," featuring a huge buffet with a wide selection of fruits, cereals, and freshly prepared items like fluffy eggs and crispy French toast. The hotel also offers a "dine-around" option, allowing guests to experience different culinary delights.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Tschuggen Grand Hotel receive consistent commendation. Guests describe the team as "polite and friendly," "welcoming and helpful," and "attentive." Many reviews highlight the staff's dedication to guest care, noting that they make visitors feel "respected and welcomed," and some even state they were "treated like gold." The unique "Dream Butler" service, which offers a bespoke pre-sleep ritual including a footbath, massage, and room preparation, exemplifies the hotel's commitment to personalized luxury.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a spectacular and quiet location in Arosa, nestled at 1800 meters above sea level, directly within the skiing and hiking area. Its private Tschuggen Express funicular provides unparalleled ski-to-door access to the Arosa-Lenzerheide winter sports region. In winter, guests have immediate access to ski slopes, cross-country tracks, curling, and skating rinks. During summer, the Arosa Card provides benefits like free cable cars, regional bus access, boat rentals, and beach area access, enabling activities such as golf, balloon trips, paragliding, and tobogganing. The hotel offers a free shuttle service around town and free private parking. Arosa train station is a short 3-minute drive, and Zurich can be reached within a 2-hour drive. The hotel is also committed to accessibility, offering barrier-free rooms and wheelchair-accessible public areas, including the spa.
7. Value & Pricing
As a five-star luxury property with Michelin recognition, the Tschuggen Grand Hotel is considered a significant splurge. Nightly rates can range from approximately $530 to over $900, with an average around $649-$966 depending on the room type and season. Despite the high price point, guests generally consider it to be worth the cost due to the exceptional service, unique private mountain access, world-class spa, and gourmet dining experiences.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted by guests. One review mentioned the spa water being "a little bit cold" and that the "water circuit" was not entirely clear. Another guest commented that the town of Arosa itself "isn't very attractive," though this does not diminish the appreciation for the hotel's specific location and private amenities. These appear to be isolated comments rather than widespread recurring issues.

Amazing service from the whole team. Great facilities, a 20 mun walk to the centre but there is a free shuttle bus that takes you where you want to. Their own fanilcular take you straight up the slopes. Ski room. Ski hire/shop. Business room. Spa to die for. Bathroom was amazing. The bedroom was well equipped, very clean, just a little dated. But this is a very small thing when compared to everyth...

Sports massage - Warning I just rate the spa treatment, not the hotel itself. I had booked a 60 minutes sports massage. The massage was carried out by therapist S. C. predominantly with one hand; at times, I had the impression that he was otherwise occupied with the other hand. Overall, the treatment in no way corresponded to a sports massage and came across as unprofessional, to the extent tha...

We came to Arosa instead of St. Moritz and wow, we made the right decision. We had a corner junior suite overlooking the mountains. We had the Stay 4/Pay 3 deal with the 1/2 board and the cost was equal to a one night stay in a lake view junior Suite at Badrutt’s Palace in St Mortiz. A great value and the Staff at the hotel and the restaurant were friendly and willing to go above and beyond to ...

Without a doubt, one of the best hotels in the world. I just wouldn’t recommend coming during the hot season, but apart from that, every stay has been exceptional. This is what a real five-star experience feels like. Compared to hotels like The Chedi Andermatt, the quality here is on a completely different level.

I visited the grand hotel in Atosa during July, so it was Summer. As weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, I would suggest bringing a rain jacket, and a fleece or jumper, just in case. The food at the restaurant is excellent and the service is very good. Breakfast have an amazing buffet, and also an à la carte selection. I had dinner once in the restaurant, and can attest to the beautif...

Beautiful high-end hotel in the Swiss mountain resort of Arosa. Two unique experiences were the beautiful mountain hot water spa / swimming pool and the Private cable car to the station of the Weisshorn bahn. Kids club was also an hit with our 3 year old - many toys / activities and friendly staff. Free / easy parking. Amazing room with panoramic views (south facing suite)
