Expert Review: Thompson Washington D.C.
The Thompson Washington D.C., a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its modern luxury, stylish design, and prime location in the vibrant Navy Yard neighborhood.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Thompson Washington D.C. is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their experiences as "excellent," "amazing," and "superb." Many consider it their "go-to place in DC" for both personal and business stays. The hotel maintains a high rating, often scoring 8.7 and above, with particular commendation for its location, cleanliness, and staff.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make the Thompson Washington D.C. stand out:
- Location: The hotel's position in the Navy Yard district is a major draw, offering easy access to restaurants, shops, Nationals Park, Audi Field, and the Metro.
- Design: The hotel boasts a sleek, modern, and aesthetically appealing design with mid-century resonances and a subtle maritime vibe. The lobby, in particular, is noted for its chic and welcoming ambiance.
- Service & Staff: The staff are frequently described as "super friendly," "welcoming," "accommodating," and "helpful," often going above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay.
- Amenities: A lively lobby bar, a standout rooftop bar with great views (Anchovy Social), and a well-maintained property are frequently praised. Free in-room WiFi is also appreciated.
3. Room Quality
Rooms at the Thompson Washington D.C. are generally described as clean, well-decorated, and comfortable, with a modern, minimalist, and industrial-chic aesthetic. They are efficiently laid out and not considered particularly short on space, with some offering large windows and private balconies with city views. Key features include super comfy beds and pillows, smart televisions, and private bathrooms with designer toiletries. While comfortable, some guests have noted that the lighting can be on the darker side, and some find the design less distinctively "Washington D.C." compared to other Thompson properties. The thermostat is efficient, maintaining a comfortable room temperature.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers several dining options, including Surveyor (the in-house restaurant), The Thompson Bar Room in the lobby, and the Rooftop at The Thompson (also known as Anchovy Social).
- Breakfast: Feedback on breakfast is mixed but generally positive. It's often served at Surveyor, with guests appreciating the quality, especially the coffee. However, some past issues were noted regarding the breakfast system (e.g., voucher system, limited options for Globalists, or delays when the restaurant was understaffed).
- Other Dining: The rooftop bar is a major highlight, known for its atmosphere and views, though cocktails can be pricey. Maialino Mare, the flagship restaurant, is a Roman-style trattoria focusing on fresh seafood. Guests have enjoyed dishes like dry-aged pork chop and salmon. The lobby bar is also lively, especially on weekends.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Thompson Washington D.C. consistently receive excellent reviews. Guests frequently commend the team for being friendly, efficient, welcoming, and accommodating. Many experiences highlight personalized greetings and thoughtful recommendations. Issues, when they arise (such as a forgotten item or a billing query), are typically recovered quickly and resolved efficiently by the staff.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel is strategically located in the Navy Yard District, a lively and rapidly developing area.
- Attractions: It's an easy walk to Nationals Park and Audi Field, with numerous restaurants and bars nearby. Yards Park is also a pleasant spot to visit. The Capitol Building is about a mile walk, and the National Mall and Botanic Gardens are a 30-minute walk away. The White House and other historic sites are also accessible.
- Transportation: The Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station (Green Line) is a short walk away (less than 10 minutes, often cited as 4 minutes), making it easy to access the rest of D.C., including the National Mall and airports. For those arriving from DCA, it's a quick Uber ride or accessible via Metro. Valet parking is available, though it incurs a daily charge.
7. Value & Pricing
The Thompson Washington D.C. is a Category 4 property in the World of Hyatt program. Cash rates for a standard room can range around $200 per night, but can fluctuate from the high $100s to low $300s, and up to $500 during peak seasons like cherry blossom season. Award rates range from 12,000 points (off-peak) to 18,000 points (peak), with a standard rate of 15,000 points per night. While some find the points redemption value a bit low, many consider it a solid option, especially for Hyatt loyalists or when good cash rates are available.
8. Common Complaints
While feedback is largely positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Breakfast Issues: In the past, guests have reported issues with the breakfast experience, such as understaffing, long waits, limited options, or a frustrating voucher system, particularly for Globalist members.
- Room Lighting: Some guests have found the room lighting to be dim, with a lack of sufficient overhead lighting in certain rooms.
- Gym Size: The gym, while having good equipment, is surprisingly small for a modern hotel, making it difficult for more than a few people to work out with weights simultaneously.
- Shower Design: A door-less shower in some rooms has led to a wet bathroom floor and a colder showering experience.
- Minor Inconveniences: Occasional issues like wobbly furniture, phone issues, or a lack of top sheets have been noted. Noise levels can also be a minor inconvenience during busy weekends.

The Rooftop at the Thompson (bar lounge) has some beautiful views at night and leans towards the mid-30 and under crowd. I am not that! So after I got my fill for the atmosphere we headed downstairs to the hotel bar. Best bartender EVER! Wish I remembered his name. Our stay there was very nice and the staff receives A++ all around. We would definitely stay again.

The water pressure was amazing. As a globalist got upgraded to a corner king bed and it was fantastic. Rooftop bar was a vibe. Definitely check it out. I checked in at 8pm so didn’t get to see too much but I can imagine it being a great spot in spring or summer. Lots of food options nearby. Breakfast at surveyor was a free drip coffee/tea + entree. Parking was valet but if staying on award night i...

My stay at Thompson by Hyatt in Washington, DC was absolutely amazing from beginning to end. Thanks to American Express collection, I was able to check in early and check out late, which made the experience even better. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay. Breakfast was offered (taxes apply, but the food is 100% worth it), and I also received a $100 credit that...

Breakfast in the restaurant was delicious and plentiful with great service. Wasn't a fan of having my dinner in the high table bar area but I survived. It was cool there was a vendor event eith food and music right across the street giving us something to do. Walkin...

Hotel itself is gorgeous. Water pressure in the showers fantastic. Bed firmness and pillows exactly how I love to sleep. Plenty of outlets to accommodate our CPAP use and for charging our electronics on either side of bed. Location very walkable and convenient for our needs. A few late night eats available nearby. Dislikes: Half glass wall in the bathroom so water inevitably splashes onto the fl...

I recently stayed at the Thompson for a night in DC with my wife. The nearest parking is quite accessible and connects to nice wood accents in the furniture and molding. When we came back inafter a day on the Mall and museums and an evening at the Wharf we came back to the rooftop bar, and I sang some karaoke and serenaded my lovely wife! The dine in breakfast was perfect with the sunrise over th...
