Expert Review: The Westin Leipzig
The Westin Leipzig stands as a prominent and often-praised hotel in Leipzig, Germany, distinguished by its city-center location and a blend of modern luxury within a building steeped in history. As a Michelin Key Selected property, it aims to deliver a high-quality guest experience, and reviews generally reflect this commitment.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for The Westin Leipzig is largely positive, with guests frequently commending its prime location, cleanliness, and excellent service. On Marriott's official site, it holds an average rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars based on over 1,300 reviews. Agoda users rate it 8.2 out of 10, with verified guests giving an even higher 8.5. Booking.com also shows a strong "Very Good" rating of 8.4 out of 10 from over 4,400 reviews. While considered an upscale hotel, it's often viewed as offering good value for money compared to other Leipzig hotels.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several outstanding aspects of their stay:
- Location: The hotel's central position is a major draw, offering easy access to the main train station and various city attractions.
- Service: The staff frequently receives praise for being friendly, professional, attentive, and helpful.
- Views: Panoramic city views, especially from the higher floors and the Falco bar, are a recurring highlight.
- Amenities: The presence of Leipzig's largest hotel swimming pool is a significant amenity, alongside a well-equipped fitness center.
3. Room Quality
The Westin Leipzig offers modern and comfortable accommodations. Rooms are typically described as clean, quiet, and well-maintained, with soundproofed windows ensuring a peaceful stay. Guests appreciate features such as flat-screen TVs and elegant granite bathrooms equipped with cosmetic mirrors and hairdryers. The Westin's signature "Heavenly Bed" is consistently praised for providing a very comfortable sleep experience. Room sizes vary, with Classic Guest Rooms starting at 20 square meters and Deluxe Guest Rooms offering 26 square meters, often with city views. While some rooms reportedly include complimentary tea and coffee makers, older reviews noted an absence in some. A minor point of criticism for some guests is the use of two individual mattresses instead of a single large one on king beds.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel provides a diverse culinary experience with multiple on-site dining options:
- Breakfast: The breakfast buffet at Restaurant Brühl is highly regarded for its variety, freshness, and high quality, offering a wide selection including various breads, fresh fruits, juices, hot dishes, cold cuts, and cheeses. The attentive staff at breakfast also actively offers hot egg dishes prepared to order.
- Restaurants: Other dining options include Restaurant Gusto and SHINTO Bar & Lounge, which offers international dishes and opens in the evenings.
- FALCO The! Heavenly Bar: Located on the 27th floor, this exclusive bar boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It's known for its elegant ambiance, first-class bar team, innovative drink creations, and an exceptional selection of around 940 wines.
- FALCO Gourmet Restaurant: The hotel also hosts the Michelin-rated FALCO fine dining restaurant, situated on the top floor. While highly acclaimed for its exquisite cuisine, it is on the expensive side, with tasting menus starting from around €160 per person. It's worth noting that this restaurant is sometimes outsourced, meaning Marriott Bonvoy points may not apply to dining there.
5. Service & Staff
The service at The Westin Leipzig is consistently rated highly, with a score of 4.3 out of 5 on Marriott's platform and 9.1 out of 10 on Booking.com. Guests frequently describe the staff as super friendly, very helpful, accommodating, and professional across various departments, from reception to breakfast service. Specific appreciation is often given to the attentiveness and willingness of staff to go the extra mile. However, there have been isolated reports of less friendly receptionists or occasional language barriers with some housekeeping staff.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Westin Leipzig enjoys a prime, central location in Leipzig. It's only a 5-10 minute walk from the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (main train station), making it highly convenient for arrivals and departures. The hotel's central position places guests within easy walking distance of major city attractions, including the Leipzig Zoo, the Opera House, various museums, and vibrant shopping and dining districts. Public transportation, including trams and trains, is also readily accessible within a 5-minute walk, providing excellent connectivity throughout the city.
7. Value & Pricing
The perceived value for money at The Westin Leipzig receives mixed, but generally positive, feedback. Marriott's internal rating gives it 3.8 out of 5 for value, while Booking.com rates it 8.0 out of 10. Agoda notes an average price of $143 per room, stating it offers "exceptional value for money" compared to Leipzig's average hotel room price of $124. However, some guests feel the overall value is diminished by certain additional costs, most notably the charge for using the pool and spa facilities. Typical price ranges vary greatly depending on the season and room type, but it's positioned as an upscale option.
8. Common Complaints
While generally positive, several recurring issues are mentioned in guest reviews:
- Pool and Spa Access Fee: A frequent and notable point of contention is the additional charge (often €5-€10 per entry) for using the hotel's indoor swimming pool and sauna facilities. Guests often express disappointment, expecting these amenities to be included given the hotel's category and pricing.
- Condition of Pool/Spa Area: Some reviews suggest the pool and spa area could benefit from renovation and more dedicated attention.
- Technical Issues: A few guests have reported technical equipment in rooms not meeting expectations, or issues with WiFi connectivity.
- Outsourced Services: There are complaints that certain outsourced services, like some spa treatments or the Falco restaurant, do not allow for the earning of Marriott Bonvoy points, leading to a feeling of less value for elite members.
- Twin Mattresses: For couples, the presence of two single mattresses pushed together instead of a single large mattress can be a minor comfort issue.
- Housekeeping Inconsistencies: Isolated feedback mentions a lack of attention to detail from housekeeping or communication difficulties with some staff members.

We stayed in a suite, room 2326. Very nice room. Only downside it is by the elevator core and you can hear the elevator going up and down all night. I brought a sound machine and it drowned out the noise. The room never got cool enough for me. We opened the windows but airflow was limited. Also, no wash clothes offered on the hotel so bring wipes! The view is gorgeous. Off to the left is the zoo. ...

Not Bad, but not very good either…Great Location, amazing city views, but also very crowded and not very personal or anything special…some rooms look dated, breakfast was so crowded that limited staff was running around like they tried to win a marathon without any personal greeting and a big challenge to find any free table…they completely ignored me trying to refill the buffet…check-in felt scri...

Batty On Tour
Batty checked into the Westin Leipzig and was immediately charmed by the staff – honestly, they’re friendlier than a flock of pigeons around a bratwurst stand. 🦇👏 But oh dear… the hotel itself feels like it’s seen more reunions than just the one in ’89. Retro vibes are fun – unless they weren’t meant to be retro. 😅 And the pool? Even with Titanium Elite Status, Batty had to pay extra. A bat p...

Hotel is in a dire need to renovate the rooms. Double rooms have two single beds joined, mattresses are so worn out that you sleep in a hole in the middle of single bed. Tiny TVs (~27inch). No sockets or USB ports near bed to connect charger, luckily had 3m cable so plugged in on bathroom wall. Thermostat does nothing, had to open window to cool down the room a bit. No underground or guarded parki...

Breakfast is very average. Poorly served eggs & average quality of bacon. For a Hotel of this stature, there is room for improvement
