Expert Review: The Savoy
The Savoy, London, stands as an emblem of timeless British luxury, having earned the prestigious Michelin Three-Keys distinction, signifying an "extraordinary stay." This iconic hotel consistently garners high praise for its grandeur, impeccable service, and unparalleled location.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Savoy is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "luxurious," "stunning," and an "iconic landmark" that delivers an exceptional five-star experience. Its Michelin Three-Keys rating underscores its status as a property offering an extraordinary stay, embodying the pinnacle of luxury hospitality. Many consider it a "bucket list" destination and would return without hesitation.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of The Savoy:
- Location: Its prime position on the Strand, uniquely situated on the Northbank of the River Thames, offers breathtaking river views and unparalleled access to London's West End, Covent Garden, and numerous attractions.
- Service: The hospitality is frequently described as exemplary, attentive, and friendly, with many highlighting the dedicated staff.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's blend of Edwardian and Art Deco styles, often recently refreshed, provides an atmosphere of understated extravagance and historic charm.
- Dining & Bars: The extensive range of world-class restaurants and historic bars, including those by Gordon Ramsay, is a major draw.
- Amenities: Facilities such as the indoor heated pool, gym, spa, and the exclusive Savoy Butler Service for suites are highly valued.
3. Room Quality
The Savoy offers 267 guest rooms and 73 suites, decorated in either Edwardian or Art Deco styles, blending classic elegance with modern comfort. Rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, featuring luxurious linens, Savoir Beds, and Penhaligon's Savoy Steam toiletries. Many rooms boast impressive river views, overlooking landmarks like the London Eye and Houses of Parliament. Suites, such as the Personality Suites, offer distinct character and come with the renowned Savoy Butler Service. While often praised for their comfort and design, some guests have noted that the most basic rooms (e.g., Superior Queen) can feel less grand or somewhat cramped compared to expectations for a five-star property, and some decor elements might appear dated to certain tastes.
4. Dining Experience
The Savoy is a culinary destination, featuring several renowned restaurants and bars:
- Gordon Ramsay Restaurants: The hotel houses three Gordon Ramsay establishments: the intimate, Michelin-starred Restaurant 1890 (offering an 8-course degustation menu), the grand Savoy Grill (a historic venue with a classic British/French menu, recently revamped), and the more relaxed, seafood-centric River Restaurant.
- Thames Foyer: Located at the heart of the hotel, it serves daily full English breakfast (often included with certain bookings) and is famous for its exceptional champagne high tea.
- Bars: The American Bar, London's oldest surviving cocktail bar, is steeped in history and offers an impressive cocktail list. The Beaufort Bar provides a more ostentatious Art Deco ambiance with a modern, sultry vibe and occasional live entertainment. Guests praise the quality of food, with breakfast options like lobster omelette being a highlight.
5. Service & Staff
The service at The Savoy is consistently rated as "impeccable," "friendly," and "attentive" by guests. Staff members are known for being welcoming, helpful, and accommodating, contributing to a seamless and memorable stay. The dedicated Savoy Butler Service, available for suite guests, offers personalized assistance, from unpacking to itinerary management. While rare, one guest reported a negative and uncharacteristic welcome experience at the Beaufort Bar, noting it was inconsistent with the otherwise excellent service.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Savoy boasts an "excellent" and "perfect" location on the Strand, making it incredibly accessible and convenient for exploring London. It is the only centrally located five-star hotel directly on the River Thames, providing stunning views and a unique connection to the city's waterfront. Key attractions such as Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, the West End theatres (including the adjacent Savoy Theatre), Somerset House, and the South Bank are all within easy walking distance. Public transport options are also excellent, with Charing Cross, Temple, and Embankment tube stations nearby.
7. Value & Pricing
The Savoy is undoubtedly a luxury property with a high price point. Basic rooms can start around £630 per night, excluding breakfast, with suites commanding significantly higher rates, sometimes exceeding £10,000 per night for the most opulent options. Despite the cost, many guests consider the experience "worth the cost" and an "extraordinary experience," citing the unparalleled level of service, amenities, and historic ambiance. Some reviews even suggest that, compared to other classic luxury hotels in London, The Savoy's room rates can be "more accessible" without compromising the high-end feel.
8. Common Complaints
While generally highly praised, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Room Consistency/Modernity: Some guests found that the cheapest rooms (e.g., Superior Queen) were "a bit smaller" or "more modern" than anticipated, with some decor elements perceived as dated, or lacking expected five-star touches like a welcome amenity. One review mentioned a lack of easily accessible plugs for a kettle and some wear and tear on furniture or carpets in a superior queen room.
- Impersonal Feel: Due to the hotel's size and high volume of guests, some individuals occasionally felt like "a number" and longed for more personalized service, although this was not a widespread sentiment.
- Pool Area Seating: The pool area, while an oasis, has limited loungers, which some guests find insufficient for relaxation.
- Minor Maintenance Issues: Infrequent small maintenance issues, such as unfinished light fittings, have been observed.
- Breakfast Exclusions: Breakfast is not always included in the room rate for all bookings, which can add to the overall cost.

Our stay was great. The property is historic and the rooms are comfortable and roomy. The heated floors in the bathrooms is the cherry on top. But what makes your stay great are the people. The staff makes you feel like one of the family. Makes you feel special when away from home. The American bar staff was fantastic specially James and Vineta.

My husband, my daughter and I were delighted to stay at the Savoy for three nights this past week. We dined at the Savoy Grill and had high tea at the hotel which felt like a respite on cold rainy London days. Several staff members went out of their way to make our stay memorable...

We have recently enjoyed an overnight stay at The Savoy to celebrate a milestone birthday for my husband. Whilst it might be expected that a hotel of its calibre would demonstrate exemplary service in all areas, it does not always mean that it is demonstrated. We would, however, like to congratulate the hotel on exceeding our expectations in all areas. We were warmly greeted by Ayesha on our arri...
