- Thoughtful Touches: A complimentary glass of Prince Edward County's Hinterland sparkling wine upon check-in and locally made amenities exemplify the hotel's attention to detail.
3. Room Quality
The Royal Hotel offers 33 guest rooms in the main building, each uniquely named after Ontario apple and pear varieties, and five apartment-style rooms in the adjacent "The Annex" building, designed with a Scandi-inspired aesthetic for longer stays. Rooms are characterized by their modern design, high-end comforts, and a quiet atmosphere.
Guests can expect airy, light-filled spaces with luxurious touches such as crisp Italian linens and plush duvets. Some larger suites, like the Empire Room, boast in-room soaker tubs, sitting areas, marbled bathrooms, and fireplaces. Each room features custom bath and body amenities by Telford, a local producer, along with in-room complimentary coffee and tea service, a fully stocked mini-bar with local beverages, and free WiFi with a dedicated access point. Filtered water and ice machines are conveniently located on each floor. The hotel is also pet-friendly in some suites within The Annex, for an additional fee.
4. Dining Experience
The Royal Hotel is a culinary destination in itself, emphasizing a strong farm-to-table philosophy.
- The Restaurant: Helmed by Executive Chef Albert Ponzo, known for his work at acclaimed Toronto establishments, the main restaurant offers a gourmet, Italian-inspired menu that celebrates regional ingredients from Edwin County Farms and other local suppliers. The warm dining room features an open archway with views into the kitchen and extends to an expansive outdoor dining area overlooking lush gardens. It serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with guests praising dishes like homemade pasta, duck confit, charcoal-grilled rib-eye, and delectable desserts such as zabaglione-infused tiramisu.
- The Counter Bar: This casual, all-day spot is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a quick bite. It offers freshly baked pastries and breads from the in-house bakery, coffee, and grab-and-go items. In the evenings, it transforms into a bar, known for its fantastic cocktails and wood-fired pizzas, with specials like $12 pizzas on Mondays. Boozy weekend brunches are also a highlight.
5. Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service and staff is overwhelmingly positive, contributing significantly to the "exceptional experience overall." Guests consistently describe the staff as "very friendly" and appreciate their "fantastic attention to detail." The team is dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences through meticulous service. The hotel offers 24-hour front desk and concierge services to assist guests. However, one guest review on Expedia noted "indifferent service, especially breakfast," with staff reportedly inattentive.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Royal Hotel enjoys an enviable position at 247 Picton Main Street, making it "the anchor of the town" and perfectly situated for guests to explore Picton on foot. Picton's Main Street is lined with boutique shops, cafes, art galleries, and the historic Regent Theater.
Beyond Picton, the hotel serves as a "terrific home base" for discovering the wider Prince Edward County, renowned for its food, wine, and charming small-town ambiance. Numerous wineries are just a short drive away, and the hotel itself occasionally hosts local winemakers for tastings. Prince Edward County is located approximately a two-hour drive from Toronto, making it an accessible countryside escape. On-site parking and seasonal valet services are available for guests.
7. Value & Pricing
As a Michelin Key One-Keys property, The Royal Hotel is positioned as a luxury boutique hotel, and its pricing reflects an upscale and exclusive experience. While specific nightly room rates vary, the overall offering of high-end design, farm-to-table dining, and extensive amenities like a spa and pool, positions it at a premium price point. The hotel's event pricing, for instance, includes a significant food and beverage minimum spend and a full buyout of its 33 rooms for weddings, indicating a luxury segment. Despite the high-end nature, some dining options, like two-course meals at the restaurant, have been noted as "reasonably priced."
8. Common Complaints
While overall guest sentiment is highly positive, one recurring criticism noted by a guest involved "indifferent service" during breakfast, with staff reportedly outside rather than attending to diners.
It's also worth noting the hotel's history: prior to its extensive renovation, the building was in a severe state of disrepair, described as "crumbling" with moss growing inside. However, this historical context now serves as a testament to the comprehensive and successful restoration that has transformed it into the celebrated establishment it is today.

We were seated right infront of the kitchen which was super cool to watch during the dinner service. We ordered the truffle pasta, gnocchi and steak frites. All were absolutely scrumpt...

Excellent food - first rate and great quality. Room could use some improvements. Fresh drinking Water, an extra garbage can and more storage would be great! Bed was very comfortable and washroom was well appointed and excellent products within the room. Criticisms are very minor. Overall a strong hotel that’s really focused on its clients. Would definitely stay again.
