Expert Review: Ace Hotel Toronto

Ace Hotel Toronto, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Keys property, offers a unique and highly acclaimed experience in the heart of Toronto's Fashion District. It stands out for its striking design, vibrant atmosphere, and excellent culinary offerings.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Ace Hotel Toronto is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its beautiful architecture, great vibe, and cool amenities. It holds an exceptional rating on various platforms, with many travelers highly recommending it. The hotel is recognized by the Michelin Guide as a "very special stay" and is considered a leader among Toronto's hotels for its ground-breaking design and artistic flair.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about the hotel's distinctive design, a collaborative effort by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects and Atelier Ace, which features curvaceous brick, concrete, and wooden forms with a retro-futuristic feel. The lively lobby bar and the rooftop bar, Evangeline, are significant draws, offering a vibrant social hub. Its prime, walkable location is also a major highlight, placing guests close to numerous attractions and cultural institutions. The hotel's restaurant, Alder, is a particular point of praise. Many appreciate the hotel's dog-friendly policy, with a nearby dog park being a plus for pet owners.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Ace Hotel Toronto are described as comfortable, efficient, and anything but ostentatious, embodying the brand's unique style. They feature a warm and organic aesthetic, combining unpretentious bare wooden surfaces, vintage-inspired furniture, raw concrete, and metal elements. Guest feedback highlights the thoughtful design of the interiors, including window sofas and carefully chosen lighting and furniture. Standard amenities include air conditioning, bathrobes, designer toiletries, hair dryers, and 55-inch Smart TVs. Many rooms also boast in-room record players with a curated vinyl library, adding a unique touch. Some guests particularly enjoy the "scent of the room." However, double rooms designed for four people have been noted as potentially small. Blackout drapes ensure undisturbed slumber.

4. Dining Experience

Ace Hotel Toronto offers diverse and highly-regarded dining options:

  • Alder: This Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant, helmed by chef-partner Patrick Kriss, is a standout. Located below the lobby, it focuses on honest, wood-fired Mediterranean cuisine, serving dinner daily and popular weekend brunches. Dishes like pecorino-finished ricotta ravioli, grilled seafood, and smoked oysters are featured. While the food receives high praise, one reviewer noted the ambiance could feel noisy and cold, resembling a commercial cafeteria.
  • The Lobby Bar: Situated above Alder, this suspended bar offers craft cocktails, wine, beer, and light fare, serving as an inviting space for work or revelry. Breakfast is also served here from 7:30 AM to 11 AM, with options for made-to-order meals.
  • Evangeline: Perched on the 14th floor, this all-season rooftop bar and lounge provides panoramic city views. It offers creative cocktails and small plates designed to complement the drinks, such as oysters with yuzu crème fraîche and tuna tartare. The cozy, fire-warmed lounge with a terrace is ideal for both warmer weather and cooler evenings.
  • The Ace (Brunch): A separate, vintage diner known for its exceptional brunch, offering dishes like duck confit and wild mushroom toast, and "the city's best French toast."
  • Coffee Shop/Cafe: A casual option for coffee and pastries, available from 7 AM to 12 PM.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback generally commends the staff for being helpful, friendly, accommodating, and professional. Many appreciate the "great service" and good vibes from the front desk. However, employee reviews paint a more mixed picture, citing concerns about high turnover, unorganized management, a lack of communication, and issues with workplace confidentiality and favoritism. Some employees have reported feeling mistreated and a lack of support from leadership.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Ace Hotel Toronto is ideally located in Downtown Toronto's Garment District, offering excellent accessibility. It is within a short walk of major attractions and vibrant neighborhoods such as Queen West (2-minute walk), Spadina Avenue Shopping District (2-minute walk), Chinatown, Rogers Centre (11-13 minute walk), CN Tower (13 minute walk), and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (within 15 minutes). Public transportation, including the Queen St West at Augusta Ave Stop, is just a 3-minute walk away. The area is highly walkable, and the hotel is also near cultural institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario and TIFF Bell Lightbox. A notable feature is the presence of a kids' park and dog park right next to the hotel. The hotel offers wheelchair accessibility in communal spaces and has dedicated accessible rooms.

7. Value & Pricing

Pricing for a 1-night stay for two adults at Ace Hotel Toronto typically starts around $190-$220 USD, excluding taxes and fees, but can fluctuate. Weekend nights tend to be more expensive, and October is noted as the most expensive month, while January is the cheapest. Many guests feel the hotel is "worth every dollar" given its unique offerings and high quality. The hotel also offers various packages and credits, such as a $65 credit for restaurants and bars or up to $30 CAD nightly credit for parking, which can enhance the overall value.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, a few recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • No In-Room Coffee/Tea: Several guests expressed annoyance at the absence of standard in-room coffee or tea making facilities, requiring them to ask for sachets or buy drinks downstairs, especially when jet-lagged.
  • Room Size: Double rooms with two beds can be quite small and tight for four people.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Although staff are largely praised, some guests reported initial confusion during check-in and with parking, though these issues were usually resolved efficiently when escalated.
  • Staff Morale/Management: Employee reviews frequently mention high staff turnover, unorganized and toxic management, a lack of communication, and issues with workplace confidentiality and favoritism. This internal criticism, while not directly from guests, could potentially impact guest experience indirectly.
  • Occasional Disruptions: Minor disruptions like early morning fire alarms have been reported, though acknowledged as unavoidable.

Last weekend, my wife was celebrating her birthday and I wanted to surprise her with a special, unique weekend getaway. The Ace Hotel was my choice and we were not disappointed. She loved the simplicity of the design in our room but the quantness and warmth of it as well. We were impressed with the professionalism of the staff and how welcome we felt. Infact, one of the staff who met us in the ele...

The whole vibe of the hotel, service was lovely at check-in. Offered water & treats and shown to the elevator. Room was cool and clean. The bed was super comfortable and felt like we had everything we needed. Parking option across the street was great and really well priced. Towels and robes felt luxe and overall we feel like we got a good value for money.

This is a very very Cool hotel. It's east asian styled and everything is wooden and warm, but minimalist. I was upgraded to a suite which was a lovely surprise as I wasn't a member or anything special. The rooms are clean and nice, and the shower was huge. The bathtub was very deep which was great for a tall person. The staff were also really great - they were kind and understanding when I was sc...

They're pet-friendly and our Shiba Inu was treated like a celebrity from the moment we walked in. Ema and the hotel staff were lovely and so kind to us - thank you for the upgrade! The hotel itself is a nightlife hot spot with a stylish rooftop space and an excellent restau...

I think we will always stay at the Ace when we visit Toronto. It’s convenient to book with Amex points. The atmosphere is laidback while elevated. The rooms are comfortable. The location offers easy access to Queen west.

Attended an event here at the Evangeline, and a dinner at Alder, the Michelin restaurant within the hotel. Overall an awesome place for gatherings or short stays in downtown Toronto. The food was absolutely a highlight. Would recommend the place to anyone who wants to grab a drink with loved ones or have a business trip.
