1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its luxurious atmosphere, impeccable service, and peaceful setting. It's often described as a tranquil oasis that allows for ultimate relaxation, a stark contrast to the bustling cities of mainland Japan. While some minor points of critique occasionally surface regarding dining costs or service attentiveness in specific areas, the overall sentiment highlights an exceptional luxury experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of the hotel:

  • Exceptional Service: The staff's proactive and anticipatory approach to hospitality is a recurring highlight, often making guests feel like family.
  • Stunning Design & Atmosphere: Inspired by Ryukyu culture, the hotel features elegant, castle-like architecture and beautiful water gardens, creating a spacious and airy feel. The open-air lobby and meticulous design contribute to a calm and refined ambiance.
  • Golf Course Setting & Views: Perched atop a hill, the resort is surrounded by the Kise Country Club's championship golf course, offering picturesque views of the course and the East China Sea from many vantage points.
  • Luxurious Spa: The stand-alone spa complex, accessible via a beautiful tropical garden walk or buggy service, is a significant draw, popular for its serene environment and diverse treatments.
  • Complimentary Driver Service: A highly appreciated amenity, guests can utilize a complimentary driver service to explore nearby attractions, local restaurants, or the hotel's beachfront, often arranged via a mobile phone provided at check-in.

3. Room Quality

The 97 rooms and suites at The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa underwent a renovation completed in November 2024, bringing them to modern standards in connectivity and style. The design is inspired by Ryukyu culture, featuring bright, minimalist interiors with warm Chinese banyan wood finishes and cream textiles.

Key features include:

  • Spacious Layouts: Rooms are generously sized, typically starting from 45 square meters, with dedicated seating areas and workspaces.
  • Private Terraces: Every room and suite boasts a private terrace, with some Cabana Rooms offering outdoor whirlpools and direct pool access.
  • Luxurious Bathrooms: Bathrooms are often enormous, featuring deep freestanding soaking tubs (many with floor-to-ceiling window views), rain showers, and high-quality toiletries from brands like Diptyque Philosykos or Asprey.
  • Amenities: Standard in-room amenities include Nespresso machines, complimentary tea and coffee, stocked mini-bars (chargeable), 42-inch LCD televisions, air conditioning, dehumidifiers, and automatic shades.
  • Bedding: While generally comfortable, some guests have noted rooms equipped with two queen mattresses pushed together instead of a true king bed, which can affect comfort for couples.

4. Dining Experience

The resort offers a variety of dining options:

  • Gusuku: The all-day dining restaurant, Gusuku, serves a comprehensive buffet breakfast with a wide array of Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes, with a particular emphasis on local Okinawan specialties like sea grapes, Jimami tofu, and Okinawa soba. While generally well-received, some guests found the breakfast buffet repetitive over longer stays.
  • Chura-Nuhji: This Italian restaurant, whose name means "beautiful rainbow" in Okinawan, focuses on full-scale Italian cuisine utilizing fresh, local Okinawan ingredients. It offers terrace seating for an al fresco dining experience.
  • Kise: A Teppanyaki restaurant where chefs prepare high-quality local seafood and Japanese black beef, including premium Wagyu, right before guests' eyes. The experience is noted for its serious approach to live cooking and excellent food.
  • Lobby Lounge & Bar: The Lobby Lounge offers stunning views of the golf course and ocean, making it a popular spot for casual lunches, drinks, and exceptional afternoon tea experiences. There is also a comfortable bar for evening cocktails.

Food and drink prices are generally considered high, as expected in a five-star hotel. However, the resort's complimentary driving service can take guests to nearby dining options outside the hotel.

5. Service & Staff

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa is highly praised for its exceptional service and warm, genuine Okinawan hospitality. The staff is frequently described as attentive, professional, friendly, and proactive, often anticipating guest needs. Examples include staff noting guest preferences, such as having champagne glasses ready at breakfast after an initial request. The hotel also operates under the renowned "2000 dollar rule," empowering employees to spend up to $2,000 per guest to ensure a memorable stay, reflecting a deep commitment to customer satisfaction. While English proficiency can vary, staff are generally helpful and strive to assist guests in multiple languages. Some minor criticisms pointed to occasional lack of attentiveness, particularly at the pool or during busy breakfast times.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa is situated in Nago, approximately midway up the island, about an hour's drive from Naha Airport. It's nestled on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the coast and enveloped by the Kise golf course.

Key points regarding location and accessibility:

  • Secluded Setting: The resort's secluded nature provides a peaceful retreat, but it means attractions are not within walking distance.
  • Car-Dependent: Guests are advised to rent a car for exploring the island due to limited public transport options. The hotel offers paid parking.
  • Transportation Services: A taxi from Naha Airport can take about an hour. An Airport Liner shuttle bus is available from Naha, though it operates less frequently to the hotel. The resort's complimentary driver service is highly beneficial for local excursions.
  • Beach Access: While not directly on the beach, Kise Beach is just a three to five-minute drive away, and the hotel provides a free beach shuttle.
  • Nearby Attractions: The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is roughly a 50-minute drive away.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star property with a Michelin Key, The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa commands premium pricing. Rates typically start around 60,000 JPY (approximately £300 or $371-$584 USD) per night. While the cost for rooms, and particularly for food and drinks within the resort, is considered high, many guests feel the unparalleled service, luxurious facilities, and serene atmosphere justify the expense for a special occasion or a truly indulgent retreat. It's seen as a worthwhile splurge for those seeking ultimate relaxation and high-class hospitality.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring minor criticisms include:

  • Dining Prices: The high cost of food and especially soft drinks within the hotel's restaurants and bars is a frequent comment.
  • Breakfast Repetition: For guests staying a week or longer, the breakfast buffet, despite its quality, can become somewhat repetitive.
  • Service Attentiveness (Minor): Occasionally, guests have noted slight inconsistencies in staff attentiveness, particularly at the pool or during busy breakfast hours, where they might have to actively seek out staff for orders.
  • Bed Configuration: Some rooms feature two queen mattresses pushed together to form a large bed, which some couples found less comfortable than a true king mattress.
  • Location Dependency: The secluded nature of the resort means a car is almost essential for exploring Okinawa, which can be a drawback for those preferring to walk or rely solely on public transport.

Such a lovely property, the rooms are modern, great layout, good sized with a nice balcony. I have not slept in such a great bedding as the one in this property, almost felt like floating in those mattresses. The place looks beautiful and the staff were super nice, especially the director of client relations. They made an effort to learn our kids names and set up a very lovely birthday surprise for my wife. Breakfast was delicious with a lot of choices. Staying here makes you feel wonderful. I would definitely choose here again.

We had such a wonderful honeymoon here, from reception to check out everything went smoothly. The shuttle to the beach was very nice and the golf course was hard but fun. Might be a little expensive for golf but it is what it is, guess you’re paying for the location. We had dinner at each of the restaurants and they were all excellent, Chika helped us both times at each restaurant and was so nice ...
