Expert Review: The Pink Hotel Coolangatta

The Pink Hotel Coolangatta, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a vibrant and unique stay on the Gold Coast, distinguished by its retro-chic design and prime beachfront location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Pink Hotel Coolangatta generally garners exceptional reviews, with an overwhelmingly positive sentiment. Guests frequently describe it as "quirky," "cool," "funky," and "artistic," appreciating its unique aesthetic and relaxed beach vibe. Review scores are consistently high across platforms, often ranging from 8.0 to 10 on Booking.com and 8.7 to 9.2 on Kayak.

2. Key Highlights

  • Design & Vibe: A standout feature is the hotel's "edgy, modern retro vibe," blending Scandinavian and mid-century design with custom wall art and neon signs. This distinctive style is a significant draw, setting it apart from typical Gold Coast accommodations.
  • Location: The hotel boasts a "prime location" directly opposite the beach in Coolangatta, offering easy access to the sand and surf. It's also conveniently within walking distance of numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars.
  • Amenities: The spectacular rooftop bar, Santeria, is a major highlight, providing fantastic ocean views and a great spot for sunset drinks. Guests also love the in-room record players with a selection of vinyl, and Smeg mini-fridges, adding to the retro charm.
  • Service: The staff consistently receives praise for being friendly, helpful, accommodating, and passionate about the local area, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.

3. Room Quality

The 19 rooms at The Pink Hotel are individually furnished, offering a blend of style, spaciousness, and comfort. Each room features custom art, neon signs, comfy beds, mid-century furniture, and Scandinavian-inspired bathrooms. Standard amenities include air conditioning, free WiFi, and a mini-bar. Suites often elevate the experience with additions like record players and fold-out couches, and some rooms boast private balconies with sea views. However, some guests have reported issues with air conditioning, describing rooms as being uncomfortably hot overnight with no apparent way to adjust the settings.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at The Pink Hotel Coolangatta centers around its on-site offerings and convenient partnerships. The hotel features an on-site restaurant and bar. "Eddie's Grub House," located next door, is a multi-award-winning burger bar renowned for its live music and extensive whiskey selection, offering room service to hotel guests. The rooftop bar, Santeria, provides a fantastic setting for drinks with panoramic ocean views. For breakfast, guests can enjoy room service or visit Ground Coolangatta nearby, which offers cafe-style breakfast, coffees, and juices.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Pink Hotel are consistently highlighted as a major asset. Guests frequently commend the team for their exceptional hospitality, describing them as "fantastic," "friendly," "helpful," "accommodating," and "passionate about the region". Many reviews specifically praise individual staff members for going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a significant draw, earning it a remarkable rating of 9.6 on some platforms. Situated in the heart of Coolangatta, it is directly opposite the beach (Greenmount Beach and Coolangatta Beach), offering immediate access to the coastline. The hotel is a short walk from Coolangatta's vibrant array of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, with the Twin Towns Services Club directly across the road. For travelers, Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is exceptionally convenient, located just a 5 to 10-minute drive away, with public transport options also available. It's worth noting that the three-story property does not have an elevator, meaning it is accessible via stairs only.

7. Value & Pricing

The Pink Hotel Coolangatta is generally considered to offer good value for its unique experience and prime location. Nightly rates can vary, with deals observed around $113-$147 for a standard stay, while suites may be priced higher. Some reviews suggest it can be "very cheap for the location", though this sometimes comes with a caveat regarding potential comfort issues. For the best rates, travelers are advised to consider staying during the low season, particularly in November and May, and to avoid Fridays, which are typically the most expensive nights.

8. Common Complaints

While highly praised, some recurring issues have been noted by guests:

  • Noise: A frequent complaint is noise, particularly from the downstairs bar (Eddie's Grub House) and general external disturbances, which can make it difficult for some guests to sleep. The hotel acknowledges noise regulations and imposes heavy fines for disturbances past 9:00 PM.
  • Air Conditioning: Several guests have reported problems with the air conditioning system, including rooms becoming excessively hot overnight and a lack of control over the temperature settings.
  • Room-Specific Issues: Occasional criticisms include non-functional TV or WiFi, instances of cockroaches in showers, and showers that flood the bathroom. Some also found additional beds, such as a third bed, to be uncomfortable.
  • Limited Traditional Hotel Amenities: Unlike larger resorts, The Pink Hotel does not offer a pool, gym, or spa, although its proximity to the beach often compensates for this. There are also mentions of limited free TV channels.
  • Accessibility: As a refurbished 1950s motel, the hotel lacks an elevator and is only accessible via stairs across its three floors.

We stayed two nights at the Pink Motel Coolangatta, in two different rooms, and both were completely unique and beautifully done. I absolutely love the old-style Queensland vibe — it really screams Miami coastal energy while keeping its classic Gold Coast charm. The whole place has a strong Wes Anderson feel, and the artist collaboration is original, creative, and very well thought out. This mote...

This iconic hotel was the perfect venue to facilitate a cracker of a retro party for 40 odd people. The staff were happy to accommodate us in any way they could. The cool and quirky details of each room put the icing on the cake. We’ll be back.
