Expert Review: The Old School Guesthouse

A Comprehensive Review of The Old School Guesthouse, Styria, Austria

Nestled in the picturesque Südsteiermark wine country, The Old School Guesthouse offers an intimate and luxurious escape, proudly recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property. This meticulously restored 20th-century village school has been transformed into an exclusive six-room hideaway, blending historical charm with modern comforts and an unwavering focus on exceptional culinary experiences.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

While the Michelin Guide is still awaiting sufficient verified guest reviews to compose a quality score, The Old School Guesthouse is generally described with overwhelmingly positive sentiment, earning a "seal of approval" from expert reviewers like Mr & Mrs Smith. Booking.com reviews, though limited in number, rate the guesthouse as "Exceptional," with perfect scores across cleanliness, value for money, facilities, comfort, and staff. The consensus paints a picture of a "refined retreat" and an "excellent hideaway" that promises a deeply personal and indulgent stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are consistently charmed by the guesthouse's unique blend of history and contemporary luxury. Key highlights include:

  • Historical Conversion & Design: The property's past as a village school is lovingly honored through restored furnishings and characterful artwork, creating a "class of its own" atmosphere.
  • Exceptional Dining Experience: Co-owner Oliver, a former sous-chef at Vienna's renowned Steirereck, crafts seasonal, farm-fresh dishes, making food and wine a central focus.
  • Personalized Service: The guesthouse is owner-managed by Petra and Oliver Lucas, who reside on-site with their dachshund Frank, ensuring a highly personalized and warm hospitality experience.
  • Luxurious Amenities: Despite its small size, the property boasts a heated outdoor swimming pool, a whimsical wood-fired sauna, beautifully landscaped gardens, and a cozy lounge area.
  • Secluded Location: Its setting amidst rolling vineyards and family-run farms offers a tranquil country escape.
  • Sustainability Efforts: The guesthouse prioritizes eco-friendly practices, including the use of sustainable materials during renovation, rigorous recycling, and a zero-waste approach to cooking.

3. Room Quality

The Old School Guesthouse features six individually designed double rooms, each offering "its own romantic charm" and unique features. Rooms are well-appointed with cushy king-size beds, 42- or 50-inch TVs, air-conditioning, and thoughtful amenities like pool bags, hairdryers, bathrobes, and locally made bath products. Some rooms, particularly Rooms 5 and 6, boast south-facing, freestanding bathtubs with far-reaching vineyard views, while others, like Room 1, offer reading nooks and private balconies overlooking meadows. The bathrooms are described as spacious and filled with natural light, featuring personal touches like herbal soaps crafted from the guesthouse's garden plants.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience is a significant draw, spearheaded by co-owner Oliver's culinary expertise. Breakfast is not a typical buffet but a daily, multi-course affair, often with a "distinctly British touch," featuring eggs cooked to order, cold cuts, yogurts, fresh fruit, and oven-warm bread and pastries. Ingredients are predominantly seasonal, local, and sourced either from the guesthouse's own gardens or nearby farms. Dinner is an exclusive affair, served only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, offering a carefully planned three-course menu, often with wine pairings, and requires pre-booking for €110. Guests can also enjoy poolside snacks during summer afternoons or request flavour-packed picnic baskets for their excursions into the wine region. The open kitchen, designed by Oliver, serves as the "heart of the house" and a natural meeting point.

5. Service & Staff

The hospitality at The Old School Guesthouse is consistently praised for its warmth and personalization. Hosts Petra and Oliver are described as "passionate" and "friendly," going above and beyond to make guests feel at home. They are often found in the gardens, improving the house, or preparing meals, embodying a genuine "home-from-home" atmosphere. Reviewers have given the staff a perfect 10/10 rating. The multi-lingual staff contributes to a welcoming environment.

6. Location & Accessibility

The guesthouse is located in Großwalz, within Austria's beautiful Südsteiermark wine country, offering a tranquil and idyllic setting amidst rolling vineyards. While secluded, the location is ideal for exploring the region's culinary and wine offerings. A car is highly recommended for independent exploration due to the sprawling nature of Southern Styria. Graz Airport is approximately a 50-minute drive away, while Vienna's main hub is around three hours by car. The nearest train station, Ehrenhausen, is about 30 minutes distant, and transfers can be arranged by Petra. The area is a haven for outdoor activities, with numerous wine hiking trails (Sausal, South Styrian, Schilcher) and cycling routes, including the challenging 403-kilometer Weinland Steiermark tour. Nearby attractions include local wineries for tastings and the UNESCO World Heritage City of Graz, an hour's drive north.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key Selected property, The Old School Guesthouse is positioned as a high-end, luxury retreat. Prices for a double room start from approximately €300-€305 per night, which typically includes the elaborate multi-course breakfast. Given the intimate setting, bespoke service, gourmet dining, and high-quality amenities, guests generally perceive the experience as offering excellent value for a refined and memorable stay in the heart of Austria's wine country.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few practical considerations are worth noting:

  • Limited Dinner Service: Dinner is only served on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which might require guests to plan their evenings or explore local restaurants on other nights.
  • Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the building, there are no lifts between floors, and wheelchair access is "extremely limited."
  • Seasonal Closure: The guesthouse closes annually from early January until late February.
  • Necessity of a Car: To fully explore the surrounding wine region and attractions, having a car is highly recommended.

Overall, The Old School Guesthouse offers an exceptional and unique experience for discerning travelers seeking tranquility, gourmet dining, and personalized hospitality in a stunning Austrian wine region.
