Expert Review: The Old Inn

The Old Inn in Crawfordsburn, Bangor, Northern Ireland, is a distinguished property recently recognized with a Michelin Key, signifying exceptional quality and service. This historic hotel, part of the Galgorm Collection, consistently receives high praise for its charming atmosphere, gourmet dining, and tranquil Treetop Spa.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Old Inn is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "wonderful" and "charming place" that offers a perfect escape. It holds an impressive rating, scoring around 9.1 out of 10 on Booking.com for overall wonderfulness, with high marks for cleanliness (9.5), comfort (9.5), and staff (9.6). Its Michelin Key selection, akin to Michelin Stars for restaurants, underscores its outstanding hospitality, unique design, and memorable guest experiences, with inspectors considering factors like architecture, service, character, value, and contribution to the neighborhood. The hotel has also been recognized as AA Hotel of the Year in Northern Ireland.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Old Inn for its serene Treetop Spa, perched above Crawfordsburn Country Park, which offers an outdoor hot tub, pool, sauna, and steam room. The hotel's historic charm, complete with cozy corners, log fires, and elegant interiors, is another significant draw. The exceptional food and the warm, friendly service from the staff are frequently highlighted as key reasons for memorable stays. Its ideal location between Bangor and Belfast, offering both rural tranquility and easy access to city amenities, is also a major advantage.

3. Room Quality

The Old Inn features 33 individually furnished guestrooms, described as Victorian-inspired with a blend of rich textiles and dark wood furnishings. Rooms are generally found to be beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. Many rooms offer modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, coffee/tea makers, and private bathrooms with rainfall showerheads and complimentary toiletries. Some junior suites boast standalone copper bathtubs, and a special suite and cottage come with a private hot tub, adding a touch of luxury. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms, particularly "Petite" rooms, can be smaller, and some decor might feel dated or could benefit from modernization. Specific feedback mentions uncomfortable antique four-poster beds in some suites and poor-quality pillows.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at The Old Inn is highly regarded, with its restaurant holding an AA Rosette for culinary excellence. The restaurant specializes in local cuisine with international influences, showcasing fresh, local ingredients. Guests can enjoy a globally inspired restaurant menu or a more informal bar menu. Breakfast is particularly praised, often available as a complimentary full Irish breakfast. The breakfast buffet is beautifully presented, offering a wide selection including fresh fruits, pastries, cereals, local cheeses, and hot dishes made to order, such as Ulster fry or smoked eel. The 1614 Bar provides a cozy atmosphere for drinks and is also dog-friendly. Afternoon tea is also available.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Old Inn consistently receive high praise for being lovely, friendly, attentive, and helpful. Guests frequently highlight the warm and inviting greeting upon arrival and the exceptional service at the bar and restaurant. However, some employee reviews, while not directly guest feedback, mention issues with management, high staff turnover, and understaffing, which could potentially impact service consistency in busy periods.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Old Inn is ideally situated in the peaceful village of Crawfordsburn, offering a rural retreat with fabulous views of Crawfordsburn Country Park. It is conveniently located just 5 minutes from the seaside town of Bangor and 10-15 minutes from Belfast, making it a great base for exploring the area. Nearby attractions include Crawfordsburn Country Park for walks and beaches, Bangor Marina for boat trips, and the Ulster Folk Museum. Belfast city attractions like Titanic Belfast are also within a short drive. Public transport options include a train to Helen's Bay station, followed by a 20-minute walk through the park. Some guests have noted accessibility challenges within the old building due to steps.

7. Value & Pricing

Rates for a stay at The Old Inn typically start from around $221-$226 per night for two adults. While some guests consider it a reasonable price for the overall package, including fabulous food, relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful rooms, others have felt that certain rooms were substandard for the price paid. The Michelin Key status implies that the hotel offers "value for the price," indicating that the experience generally justifies the cost.

8. Common Complaints

While generally positive, some recurring criticisms include the spa being small and potentially overcrowded during peak times, with some guests struggling to get a turn in the hot tub or jacuzzi. There have also been mentions of maintenance work disrupting the spa atmosphere and issues with cleanliness or functionality in certain spa facilities. Some room decor has been described as "old" or in need of modernization, with specific complaints about dirty carpets, peeling wallpaper, or flaking paintwork in some rooms. Additionally, a unique complaint involved the absence of a phone in some rooms, requiring guests to walk to reception for inquiries. Some guests have found the breakfast to be sub-standard or bland on occasion.

Beautiful building and excellent spa area - really cool. Drinks brought to you outside, very relaxed vibe. The building of the hotel is gorgeous, over 400 years old, but extremely well looked after. Food in the bar was excellent. Staff were very helpful and attentive, really lovely. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful place - just not quite living up to its own promise. The building and setting are undeniably beautiful and full of character, but it feels overpriced for what’s delivered. The room décor suits the historic vibe and looks good on first glance, but it’s crying out for some maintenance TLC and a few discreet modern upgrades. Wi-Fi and mobile signal were essentially nonexistent. Reception s...

Incredible place and we only were there for an afternoon private celebration in the CS Lewis function room. Stunning building with so much history and character. The food was perfect. Quality roast dinners and really good portions. Worth the cost per head.

Overall it was a mid experience at The Old Inn that was unfortunately marred by a few incidents. The spa facilities are lovely, although I did wish that there was a cold shower and the steam room could be hotter. While it was nice to be able to have drinks around the spa, there was once it took >15mins for our drinks arrive after ordering. Staff did not do regular rounds to clear any empty glasse...

Really enjoyed a two night stay over bank holiday weekend. Lovely cosy winter vibes. We were upgraded to the highway room which was so lovely and spacious with a super comfortable 4 poster bed. There was plenty of room in the spa area even at busier times and it was so pretty as it was getting dark. All the staff were so kind and helpful and really made the stay so comfortable. Dinner was deliciou...
