Expert Review: Thatch Caye, a Muy'Ono Resort

Thatch Caye, a Muy'Ono Resort, nestled in the Coco Plum Range of Belize, offers a distinctive private island escape, recognized with a Michelin Key One-Key property designation. It's lauded for its serene environment and unique all-inclusive, eco-friendly approach, though some guest experiences reveal areas for improvement.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general sentiment for Thatch Caye is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as "paradise" and an "exceptional place to stay". Verified guest reviews often rate it highly, with many expressing a desire to return. The resort is praised for its ability to provide a tranquil and relaxing getaway, allowing guests to truly unplug. However, some past reviews indicate concerns about management and service consistency, suggesting a mixed experience for a minority of visitors.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Thatch Caye:

  • Location & Ambiance: The private island setting, limited to only 30 guests, ensures quiet, privacy, and an "undiscovered paradise" feel. The automobile-free island enhances the desert-island atmosphere.
  • All-Inclusive Experience: The "All-Inclusive, Island Style" package covers three daily meals, snacks, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, roundtrip boat transfers from Dangriga, marine reserve access, and the use of non-motorized water sports equipment like kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear.
  • Water Activities: Being located along the Belize Barrier Reef, the resort offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling, diving (including night snorkeling), kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing.
  • Eco-Consciousness: Thatch Caye operates as an eco-resort, utilizing reclaimed island materials and promoting sustainability, without compromising on luxury.

3. Room Quality

Thatch Caye offers a variety of accommodations, including overwater bungalows, oceanfront cabanas, and larger casitas or family villas.

  • Design & Comfort: Rooms have been recently renovated using reclaimed island materials and are often described as beautiful, clean, well-equipped, and featuring comfortable beds and good bathrooms. Overwater bungalows, a popular choice, offer stunning 180-degree views and private balconies with hammocks. Oceanfront cabanas may feature private rooftop patios.
  • Amenities: All accommodations include air conditioning and private outdoor spaces. A deliberate choice for disconnection, rooms do not have phones, TVs, or in-room WiFi; these amenities are available in common areas like the Coco Lounge. Some guests noted the absence of mini-fridges in rooms, though some were accommodated upon request.
  • Minor Issues: A few guests have mentioned a "rustic" feel, a lack of hanging space for clothes, and some instances of exterior and interior doors not being completely watertight, potentially allowing bugs or rain in.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Thatch Caye is a central part of the all-inclusive experience, focusing on fresh, Belizean, and international cuisine.

  • Style & Ingredients: Meals are typically served family-style with no traditional menus, emphasizing fresh ingredients sourced from Muy'Ono Farms. The chefs prioritize seasonal produce and can often incorporate fresh fish caught by guests.
  • Meal Structure: A typical day includes made-to-order breakfast, a traditional Belizean lunch (with to-go options for excursions), afternoon snacks (like ceviche, nachos, hummus), and a three-course dinner featuring seafood or meat entrées, with vegetarian options available.
  • Quality & Accommodation: Guests frequently praise the food as "excellent," "delicious," "phenomenal," "fresh, healthy, nice variety, beautifully prepared and presented". The resort is accommodating to food allergies and dietary restrictions, with chefs often interacting with guests about their meals.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Thatch Caye generally receives glowing reviews, often cited as a key highlight of the stay.

  • Hospitality: Guests describe the staff as "amazing," "excellent," "friendly," "kind and engaging," often treating them like VIPs. Many feel a personal connection, noting that staff became "like family".
  • Responsiveness: Staff are noted for their accommodation of requests, such as bringing mini-fridges or addressing dietary needs.
  • Areas for Improvement: Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, isolated reviews mention instances of "disjointed" service, staff appearing unsure of their roles, or issues with beach towel replenishment. A particularly severe complaint from 2023 detailed "piss poor customer service" and issues with management over a damaged TV.

6. Location & Accessibility

Thatch Caye is a private island resort located approximately 9 miles off the coast of Dangriga, Belize.

  • Getting There: Accessibility involves a commuter flight (around 15 minutes) from Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City to Dangriga Airport (DGA), followed by a 25-minute boat ride to the resort. Roundtrip boat transfers from Dangriga Airport are included in the all-inclusive package.
  • Neighborhood & Attractions: The island itself is automobile-free, fostering a peaceful and secluded environment. Its proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef makes it ideal for marine activities. While the island offers plenty of on-site activities, excursions to the mainland for Mayan ruins or river tubing are also available. Nightlife is described as mellow.

7. Value & Pricing

Thatch Caye operates on an all-inclusive model, which generally includes accommodation, all meals, snacks, local beverages, and transfers, along with non-motorized water sports.

  • Pricing: Rates for a premier room can start around $654 per night.
  • Perceived Value: Many guests feel the unique private island experience, personalized service, and quality of food justify the cost, calling it "more than we expected" and "exceptional". However, some guests have expressed that it felt "more rustic than advertised" for the price, and for a short one-night stay, it "wasn't worth what they charge," with one guest spending over $700 US for a single day/night and feeling they "did not get our money's worth".

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, recurring criticisms and isolated negative experiences include:

  • Service Inconsistencies: Occasional issues with disjointed service, unattended bars, or delays in replenishing amenities like clean beach towels have been noted.
  • Room Maintenance/Amenities: Some guests found the rustic nature of the accommodations not entirely aligned with the price, citing issues like lack of hanging space, doors not being watertight (leading to bugs or rain), or inadequate air conditioning in specific units. The absence of in-room mini-fridges was a minor complaint for some.
  • Limited Food Variety (for some): Although dietary needs are accommodated, some guests, particularly those with strong dislikes for certain foods (e.g., spicy), wished for more variety or choices in the all-inclusive meal plan.
  • Noise: A minor complaint mentioned beach music being occasionally too loud or aggressive.
  • Serious Management Issues (historical): A significant negative review from 2023 detailed a dispute over a broken TV, accusations of wrongful detainment by management, and a perception of declining customer service under new management. It's worth noting this appears to be an isolated yet serious incident mentioned in older feedback.

Our trip to Belize was absolutely unforgettable! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the warmth, authenticity, and hospitality of everyone we met. The sister resorts we stayed at — Sweet Songs and Thatch Caye — were exceptional. Special shout out to the staff at Thatch Caye (Jackson, Anivar, Daniel, Junior, Shakira) who truly went above and beyond. We felt so welcomed and so pampere...

Absolute paradise! Though fairly remote, they made travel to the island easy. Once we got there the staff were all friendly and wonderful. Food at every meal was fresh and delicious. Snorkeling is a must! We saw so many beautiful fish, rays, lobster, and more. Would absolutely recommend and go back for a relaxing, low-key retreat!

Wow....what an experience. This place is magical. Didn't know what to expect when we got there but halfway into our first full day and I got it. The staff makes you feel like you're staying at their home. Tons of options for excursions but we spent most of our time relaxing on this tiny island. Most people were out doing their thing so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Hospitality, food,...

WE LOVE THATCH CAYE!!! My husband and I spent our honeymoon on this wonderful island and we had the best time. A short boat ride from the mainland brings you to your private all inclusive island. It has beautiful clear water, sunshine, over water bungalows with their own decks, and even 2 mascot doggies! The best thing about this resort, however, was the amazing staff. From the moment they welcome...

Paradise exemplified. This tiny island taps out on capacity around 30 people. But the adventures are endless. Paddle-boards, kayaks, and snorkel gear allow endless exploration of the surrounding fish filled waters. Catch some seafood and the excellent chefs will prepare it that night. Or, lounge on the beach and drink from the cooler of ice cold beers. Better yet get a fantastic tropical cocktail ...

My stay at Thatch Caye was everything I expected and so much more. The island has an intimate, exclusive feel—with only about 16 rooms and roughly 30 guests at a time—which made the experience incredibly peaceful and personal. During my visit, there were many couples and a few singles, creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Although the resort is kid-friendly, I personally wouldn’t recommend ...
