Expert Review: Tannenhof Sport & SPA
Tannenhof Sport & SPA in Weiler-Simmerberg, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a comprehensive wellness and sports retreat in the picturesque Allgäu region of Germany. The hotel is noted for its modern Alpine design, extensive spa facilities, and focus on active holidays.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for Tannenhof Sport & SPA is largely positive, with guests often praising its beautiful design, extensive wellness area, and culinary offerings. While a specific aggregated score from the Michelin Guide is not yet available as they require more verified stays, Google Hotels shows an average of 4.6 stars. Review platforms like Booking.com feature "Exceptional" and "Hervorragend" ratings from numerous guests, with some also noting it as "Very Good" and "Good". However, there are also criticisms, particularly regarding service consistency and value for money, which indicates a mixed, but generally favorable, overall perception.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight the hotel's exceptional sports and spa facilities. The wellness area spans 2,700 m² and includes multiple indoor and outdoor pools, a spacious sauna landscape with five saunas (including a garden sauna and bio-sauna), a unique Microsalt facility, and ample relaxation areas. The hotel is particularly renowned as one of Germany's best tennis hotels, offering both indoor and outdoor courts, along with tennis lessons. The modern Alpine design with plenty of wood and bright, stylish interiors is frequently admired, creating a cozy yet elegant atmosphere. The hotel also provides a variety of sports and activity programs, a fitness center, and is family-friendly with dedicated spaces and activities for children.
3. Room Quality
The hotel features 117 rooms, many of which are designed in a modern Alpine style and are described as cozy and elegantly furnished. Newer rooms are particularly popular. Each room is often dedicated to an individual theme, exclusively furnished, and typically includes amenities such as a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a minibar fridge, a safe, a desk, and a bathroom with a hairdryer and dressing gowns. Many rooms also boast balconies or terraces. While some guests find the rooms spacious enough for one person, others noted they could feel "tight" due to extensive furnishings, making it challenging to move around, especially to access the balcony. Some isolated feedback mentioned "quite small rooms, small blankets, small selection of bathroom products".
4. Dining Experience
Tannenhof Sport & SPA offers a comprehensive culinary experience, often operating on a ¾ board basis which includes breakfast, a light lunch snack, and an evening menu or themed buffet. The hotel features four restaurants, a fireplace bar, and an in-house vinothek. Guests can enjoy a combination of sophisticated international cuisine and hearty, traditional Allgäu specialties. Breakfast is consistently praised as "very good" and "rich". The cafe offers homemade cakes and dessert creations, while the Kaminbar is ideal for evening drinks. Some feedback, however, points to inconsistent food quality, with some guests expecting more for the price paid, describing it as "more quantity than quality" at times.
5. Service & Staff
Feedback on service and staff is mixed. Many guests commend the staff for being "friendly" and "attentive". The overall atmosphere is often described as "above-average warm" and "personal". However, recurring criticisms mention instances where staff appeared "overwhelmed," particularly during busy periods like the midday snack, leading to longer waiting times for drinks. Some guests felt the service was "very bad" or expected a higher level of service given the hotel's price point. There were also mentions of sparse information regarding meal times and locations upon arrival.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel is idyllically situated in Weiler-Simmerberg, in the western part of the Allgäu region. It lies approximately 0.9 km from Weiler-Simmerberg city center and 2.3 km from the town itself. The location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, paragliding in summer, and skiing and sledding in winter. Nearby attractions include the Hausbachklamm Gorge (1.2 km away), Scheidegger Wasserfälle (8 km), the Granary Museum, and St. Blasius Church. Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH) is approximately 43-45 km away. Public transport options exist, with a bus station merely 0.7 km away and the train station in Heimenkirch within 8 km. The hotel offers free private parking on site.
7. Value & Pricing
Prices for a stay at Tannenhof Sport & SPA include ¾ board. Room rates can start from around €304,-. While many appreciate the extensive facilities and the overall experience, some guests felt that the "value for money" could be improved. There were comments indicating that for the price, guests expected a higher standard of food quality, service, and friendliness. Some suggested they would return if prices were adjusted downwards or if service quality, particularly concerning crockery cleanliness, improved.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring issues and criticisms include:
- Service inconsistency: Guests occasionally found staff to be overwhelmed, leading to longer waiting times, especially during the midday snack.
- Perceived value for money: Some felt that the food quality and service did not always meet expectations for the price point.
- Room layout/size: While generally modern, some rooms were considered "tight" or "small" due to the amount of furniture, making movement difficult.
- Indoor pool temperature: One guest mentioned the indoor pool could be warmer (42 degrees was considered too hot by one reviewer).
- Crockery cleanliness: Specific feedback mentioned issues with the cleanliness of crockery at breakfast.
- Noise levels: Depending on the room, the noise level from other guests could vary significantly.
- Separated buildings: Guests assigned to rooms in an annex building had to frequently move between buildings for wellness and dining, which was seen as inconvenient if not communicated beforehand.

Clean, neat, tidy, everything is designed in a style that is pleasing to the eye. The staff is extremely pleasant and polite. Meals are delicious. Pretty nice gym. It's not big, but I was able to cover my exercise day with the current equipment. There are some tennis courts outside and inside. The prices are reasonable. About 30 minutes drive to Bodensee with its stunning views. Unfortunately, ...

Beautiful blend of wooden traditional with modern architecture throughout the common areas. Spacious, reasonably well equipped gym. Quite small rooms, small blankets, small selection of bathroom products. Great place for tennis and sauna/SPA enthusiasts who also like to eat copious amounts of buffet food. Expensive if you don’t take advantage of saunas, buffets or tennis.

Very nice wellness and sports hotel close to the mountains. It's located in a pretty area on the countryside. Facilities are spacious and varied, staff was very friendly, helpful, service quick. Rooms had lots of space, were clean and tidy. Only the bathroom seemed a bit older than the rest of the hotel. Food of the restaurant and breakfast were both high quality.
