Expert Review: Susafa
Susafa, a Michelin Key One-Key property located in Polizzi Generosa, Italy, offers guests a serene escape into the heart of the Sicilian countryside, blending centuries of hospitality with a focus on nature and authentic rural life. It's consistently praised for its tranquil ambiance, farm-to-table dining, and warm, family-run service.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
Susafa generally receives exceptional reviews, with guests frequently describing it as a "magical place" and a "haven of peace." It boasts high scores for service, cleanliness, comfort, and facilities. The overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting a profound sense of relaxation and a deep connection to Sicilian culture and nature.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Susafa for several standout features:
- Serene Location & Ambiance: The hotel's remote setting amidst rolling hills and fragrant gardens provides an immediate sense of calm and a "digital detox" environment.
- Design & Architecture: The 200-year-old farmhouse conversion expertly blends original exposed brick walls, tiled floors, and beamed ceilings with sensitively contemporary furnishings, creating an elegant, rustic charm.
- Farm-to-Table Dining: A major draw is the emphasis on fresh, locally sourced, and often estate-grown ingredients, including their own olive oil and pasta made from ancient grains.
- Unique Activities: Susafa offers a range of engaging experiences, such as complimentary cooking classes, wine tastings (hosted by the owner Manfredi), garden tours, and a unique aperitivo in the wheat fields at sunset.
- Infinity Pool: The stunning outdoor pool with panoramic valley views is a beloved amenity, providing a refreshing spot to relax.
Room Quality
Susafa offers 17 rooms and suites, each thoughtfully converted from former farm buildings, such as the "birthing stable" or "calves' stable." The rooms vary in size and style, ranging from 21m² classic doubles to more spacious superior suites at 70m².
- Design: Rooms feature a blend of traditional Sicilian farmhouse elements like handmade terracotta tiles, Sicilian chestnut beamed ceilings (partly recovered from the original farmhouse), and exposed brick walls, combined with modern furniture.
- Comfort: Guests consistently report comfortable accommodations with king-sized beds, quality cotton linens, goose feather or memory foam pillows, and sprung mattresses.
- Amenities: Standard amenities include air conditioning, quality Susafa-branded toiletries, and free Wi-Fi in public areas and generally decent in rooms. Some suites offer private terrace areas. Notably, rooms encourage a "digital detox" with no televisions. Bathrooms are spacious, with some superior suites featuring open-plan designs and statement white ceramic bathtubs.
Dining Experience
The dining experience at Susafa is a central part of the stay, deeply rooted in seasonality and local produce.
- Restaurant (Il Granaio): Housed in the old granary, the restaurant is a massive, vaulted brick building with a historic and elegant atmosphere. The menu focuses on regional Sicilian cuisine, emphasizing fresh, high-quality raw materials. Dishes are often made with ingredients grown on the estate, including ancient Majorca wheat for pasta.
- Breakfast: Complimentary and described as "sublime," "rich," and "delicious," it includes a wide selection of homemade cakes, biscuits, jams, local honey, fresh natural yogurt, nuts, seeds, grains, meats, cheeses, and various breads. A highlight for many is the self-service juicer with fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Lunch: In spring and early summer, lunch is served in the main dining room, or guests can request a table under the pergola. It often features a help-yourself buffet with salads, cold meats, local cheeses, bakes, homemade breads, a pasta of the day, and dessert. In peak season, a buffet and grill might open by the pool.
- Dinner: Dinner is a more formal affair, offering an à la carte menu and a daily four-course set tasting menu. While some guests have found the tasting menu to be less value for money or noted a lack of menu changes for longer stays, many still praise the food as incredible and delicious.
- Bar: The bar, located in the former wine-pressing area, is another highlight, offering wine-tasting sessions, often hosted by owner Manfredi, focusing on natural and biodynamic Sicilian wines.
Service & Staff
Hospitality at Susafa is a strong point, frequently described as excellent, warm, and attentive.
- Family-Owned: The Saeli Rizzuto family has owned and run Susafa for five generations, fostering a passionate and cherished atmosphere. Manfredi Rizzuto, the current owner, is hands-on and passionate about sustainability.
- Local Staff: Most staff are drawn from local villages, bringing genuine enthusiasm and a love for the property. They are often praised for being friendly, helpful, and personable, sometimes knowing guests by name and remembering preferences.
- Personalized Touch: Guests appreciate gestures like staff preparing food plates for late arrivals or giving out roses from the garden.
- Minor Glitches: Some isolated reviews mention individual staff members being less friendly or service being slow at times, particularly with newer staff.
Location & Accessibility
Susafa is situated in a truly rural and isolated part of the Sicilian countryside, about 20 minutes from the small town of Polizzi Generosa.
- Seclusion: The primary appeal of the location is its "cut off from the world" feel, offering immense peace and tranquility amidst vast fields, fragrant gardens, and natural sounds.
- Attractions: While intentionally remote, the hotel offers experiences like boat trips from Cefalù (an all-day trip) and cooking workshops. Guests are encouraged to explore the sprawling gardens, which feature indigenous Sicilian trees, herbs, and vegetables.
- Transport: Susafa is approximately 110-130 km (about 1.5 hours) by car from Palermo and Catania airports. A rental car is essential for reaching the property, with clear routes available from both airports via the A19 motorway. The hotel has free parking. Some guests have noted that the final road leading to the property can be in poor condition.
Value & Pricing
Susafa is considered a luxury boutique hotel and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
- Price Range: Prices typically start from around €320.00 to $472 per night for a Classic room. Superior rooms can be around $475, and a Classic Suite might cost €439 per night.
- Value Perception: Many guests find Susafa to be well worth the cost, praising the overall experience, quality of service, and food. However, some reviews suggest that while it's a very good property, it might feel "overpriced for the level of comfort and service it offers" or that the dinner tasting menu specifically might not be "very good value for money." Booking via World of Hyatt points can range from 17,000 to 23,000 points per night.
Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms occasionally appear:

- Road Condition: The unpaved or poorly maintained road leading directly to the property has been mentioned as an issue by some.
- Staff Friendliness: Isolated feedback indicates that some individual staff members were perceived as less friendly, though the overall staff sentiment is highly positive.

We had a delightful stay at Susafa. We particularly enjoyed our dinner and the breakfast, which featured fresh fruits and vegetables from the property. The fresh juices and cold cuts were especially good. The venue is set on a stunning estate surrounded by fields, making it the perfect place to take in the views and relax by the pool. The staff were attentive and friendly throughout our stay !

From the moment I arrive I had a happy smile on my face. The location its beatufil, and the service feels premium. The team greets you warmly, takes care of your things and creates a great first impression. The location is perfect if you want to disconnect from city life and beach crowds. It is surrounded by countryside, full of peace and relaxation. Rooms and amenities keep the charm of a farm b...

What a wonderful stay we had. We started our honeymoon at Susafa, we stayed for 4 nights. The food was incredible, home grown, cooked to perfection and tasted so fresh. I feel some reviews I’ve read very unfair on food- there are lots of options, we never ate the same thing twice! The staff were so lovely, couldn’t do more for you whether it be getting you a drink at the pool, collecting your lugg...

On the recommendation of a friend, I had lunch at Susafa. I'm afraid it was a poor experience. It was in the outdoor restaurant whose canopy was a mesh with holes. When it began to rain, all the diners got wet. No umbrellas were provided. The chefs & waitresses stayed under their covered area & instructed the diners to go to the main dining room. In the dining room, no towels were provided but the...

Reflecting on our time at Susafa, surrounded by €26 paninis and lukewarm wine, I can’t help but feel it simply doesn’t justify the €400 per night price tag. In short, it was meant to be the highlight of our trip but turned out to be a missed opportunity in a four-star hotel that thinks it’s a five. Given how far it is from everything, it ends up feeling less like an escape and more like being held...

Amazing one of a kind experience. Location is definitely tough but well worth a couple of nights to relax and unplug. We did a day trip to Cefalu + one to Punta Grande while here. Having the owner on property was a nice touch & you can tell how much he cares about Susafa & Sicily. Best croissants we have ever had ... would return for those alone.
