Expert Review: Six Senses Ibiza

Six Senses Ibiza: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property

Six Senses Ibiza, nestled in the serene Xarraca Bay on the island's northern tip, stands out as a luxurious wellness retreat and a Michelin Key Selected property. It's lauded for its harmonious blend of earth-kind architecture, breathtaking natural surroundings, and a strong focus on holistic well-being. While initial reviews highlighted some service inconsistencies, more recent feedback suggests significant improvements, positioning it as a top-tier destination for those seeking tranquility, luxury, and regenerative experiences.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Six Senses Ibiza is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "beautiful," "luxurious," and "exceptional." Booking.com reviews show an average rating of 9.0, indicating a "wonderful" to "superb" experience. The hotel is considered a premier luxury destination, though some early visitors felt it hadn't fully met the exceptionally high bar set by the Six Senses brand or other ultra-luxury hotels. However, with a new General Manager in place to address initial "teething problems," recent experiences are often more positive.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several standout features:

  • Wellness & Spa: A true highlight, the 13,000 sq ft spa is a destination in itself, offering a vitality pool, hammam, steam room, sauna, and unique treatments like cryotherapy and biohacking at the RoseBar. Daily yoga on the rooftop with incredible sea views is also a favorite.
  • Design & Architecture: The hotel's Earth-kind architecture is highly praised for blending seamlessly into its lush, hillside surroundings. Its Finca-style aesthetic, incorporating natural materials like bamboo cladding and mirroring the Balearics' tonal colors, creates an "utopian village" feel.
  • Location & Views: The secluded setting in Xarraca Bay offers "pristine" and "unobstructed sunsets" and "incredible sea views," providing a peaceful escape from Ibiza's party scene.
  • Sustainability: Six Senses Ibiza is the first BREEAM-certified resort in the region, recognized for its low-impact construction and operations, zero plastic waste policy (including bottling its own water), and commitment to sourcing local, seasonal, organic produce from its on-site farm.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers 116 to 137 guest accommodations, including deluxe rooms, suites, and multi-bedroom townhouses, with some unique "Cave Suites" built directly into the cliffside for an immersive experience. Rooms are generally described as "sumptuous havens of good taste," "open and airy," with "tactile natural furnishings" and a contemporary design.

Many rooms boast stunning sea views and generous outdoor spaces, often featuring daybeds perfect for enjoying the sunset. Standard amenities include free WiFi, a minibar, pillow menu, yoga mat, and sustainable bathroom products. While most experiences are positive, one guest noted a room that felt "slightly under-decorated" with visible cords and a lack of artwork, perceiving the style as "10 years ago" and "bordering on cold." Another reported a minor issue with a water stain and drip in their bathroom.

4. Dining Experience

Six Senses Ibiza offers a diverse culinary journey through several signature restaurants, including The Farmers' Market, The Orchard (Italian), North (by Israeli chef Eyal Shani), The Beach Caves (Latin American influences), and Partal, along with the poolside Pharmacy Bar. A strong "farm-to-table" ethos is central, with many ingredients sourced directly from the hotel's own organic farm.

Breakfast, served at The Farmers' Market, receives high praise for its "nature's abundance," featuring vibrant, seasonal, and organic ingredients, freshly baked artisanal breads, and chef-prepared specialties, all enjoyed with views of the Mediterranean.

Early reviews indicated some disappointment with the dining, particularly at the signature restaurant HaSalon (now North), which was criticized for being overpriced with an uninspiring menu and a lack of differentiation between dining venues. However, more recent feedback (July 2024) expressed only positive sentiments about the food. Some guests also mentioned slow service at breakfast and the pool bar.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff has been somewhat mixed, particularly in the hotel's early operational period. Some guests reported "objectively awful" and slow service, describing staff as "unpolished and untrained," with many appearing to be young interns. Instances included forgotten coffee orders, long waits for drinks, and rooms not being cleaned.

However, more current reviews paint a brighter picture, with guests praising "awesome service" and describing staff as "most polite and friendly," "cheerful," and "superstars in every way." The presence of a new General Manager has reportedly led to significant improvements in addressing past service issues.

6. Location & Accessibility

Six Senses Ibiza is ideally situated on the northern tip of the island, specifically in Xarraca Bay. This location is lauded for its "private-island atmosphere," providing a tranquil and peaceful environment far removed from Ibiza's renowned party scene.

The resort is approximately 30-40 minutes by car from Ibiza's international airport. The nearby village of Portinatx offers local restaurants and shops. The surrounding hilly landscape with verdant pine forests makes it an excellent area for scenic coastal walks. The hotel also offers direct access to a public beach and features an infinity pool overlooking the sea.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key Selected property, Six Senses Ibiza is positioned as a high-end luxury resort. The average room price is around $960, which is considerably higher than the city's average of $407. Despite the premium cost, the hotel is seen by many as offering an "unparalleled experience" and "exceptional value for the level of opulence and exclusivity." Room rates typically include breakfast.

Dining at the hotel can be expensive, with dinners potentially exceeding EUR 250, even without selecting the most costly menu items. While some guests consider it a justifiable expense for the luxury offered, others, particularly those who experienced service issues, felt the value for money (rated 7.8 on Booking.com) could be improved.

8. Common Complaints

While overall sentiment is positive, recurring criticisms have included:

  • Inconsistent Service: Particularly in earlier stages, some guests reported slow, unpolished service and staff lacking sufficient training.
  • Dining Discrepancies: Initial disappointment with food quality and perceived lack of differentiation between restaurants, along with high prices.
  • Design Details: Some rooms were felt to be "under-decorated" with visible electrical cords or an outdated aesthetic.
  • Maintenance Issues: A minor instance of a water stain/drip in a bathroom was noted.
  • Crowding: The pool deck was considered relatively small for the number of rooms, potentially leading to crowding.
  • Noise/Odor: One guest experienced cooking smells permeating their outdoor space, suggesting a ventilation issue.
  • "Conventions": Concerns were raised about public spaces being taken over by "retreats" (referred to as conventions by one reviewer), which could impact the general guest experience.

In conclusion, Six Senses Ibiza offers a luxurious and holistic escape in a stunning natural setting, making it a compelling choice for discerning travelers prioritizing wellness, sustainable luxury, and serene beauty. While past criticisms regarding service and dining exist, the hotel appears to be actively addressing these, with many guests reporting exceptional experiences.

This was the best hotel/resort of our trip! From as soon as we arrived they took such great care of my wife and myself. It was her 30th birthday and I wanted to plan somethings before we arrived which they were super helpful with. And they did everything to perfection. The room was amazing and had the best view, the breakfast was delicious and there was such a great selection from the buffet as we...

We had a fantastic stay at Six Senses Ibiza as a family of four. We stayed in one of the residences, which was perfect for us. It offered plenty of space and our own pool, which the kids loved and meant we could adhere to nap time for our youngest while our eldest could still splash. The kids club was another highlight. Our children had the best time there, and a special thank you to Angela, Gabi,...

The hotel is beautiful and our stay was truly special! The room had spectacular views of the Mediterranean and a very lovely design. The service and the food were excellent, they surprised us with a charming detail for my partner’s birthday that made the moment even more unique. The hammam is gorgeous, and the whole atmosphere is so relaxing. We highly recommend it and hope to return soon.

Six Senses Ibiza was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The property is absolutely stunning, set right on the coast with views that don’t feel real. The room was just normal, nothing special. Housekeeping was not well done, there were glass stains and no special attention. No replacement of water bottles in the minibar: I understand the eco concept, but a minimum of service is expected. No drinks, no snacks, only some nuts and dark chocolate. At more than €2,000 per night, I expected exclusive, personalized and impeccable service, Unfortunate...

I was fortunate to stay in Six Senses at the beginning of September. The villa was stunning, with breathtaking views of the sea. The property's attention to detail was impressive and the grounds were immaculate. The staff were welcoming and attentive. A special nod to the girls in the kids club who went above and beyond and were brilliant with the children. Highly recommend!
