Expert Review: Silky Oaks Lodge
Silky Oaks Lodge, nestled in the ancient Daintree Rainforest of Australia, stands as an exceptional retreat, recently recognized with Two Michelin Keys, signifying an "exceptional stay". Following a significant $20 million renovation, the lodge seamlessly blends adventure and luxury, offering an immersive nature-based experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Silky Oaks Lodge is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "dream come true" and a "magical place". It has garnered prestigious accolades, including the #1 Best Hotel in Australasia with a score of 99.67 out of 100 in the Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers' Choice Awards 2025, further solidifying its reputation as a top-tier luxury eco-lodge. Reviewers consistently praise its ability to provide a serene escape from the everyday, deeply connecting guests with the surrounding natural beauty.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Silky Oaks Lodge for several key aspects:
- Location & Design: The lodge's prime location above the Mossman River, enveloped by the Daintree Rainforest, is a major draw. Its open-sided main lodge and Treehouse Restaurant are designed to maximize views and immerse guests in the sights and sounds of the rainforest. The design is described as understated yet deliberate, ensuring nothing distracts from the natural surroundings.
- Service & Staff: The staff receives consistent praise for being "amazing," "excellent," and making guests feel "welcomed and special". They are noted for their personalized approach, getting to know guests by name and anticipating their preferences.
- Amenities & Experiences: The lodge offers a wealth of complimentary activities, including guided rainforest walks, river swimming and snorkeling, yoga, and access to kayaks and mountain bikes. The Healing Waters Spa, offering treatments inspired by indigenous rainforest wisdoms, is also a significant highlight. Evening wine and cocktail tastings are a popular way to unwind.
- Immersive Nature Connection: The ability to truly immerse oneself in the 180-million-year-old rainforest, from private decks with hammocks to open-air baths, is a recurring theme in guest praise.
3. Room Quality
The 40 luxury treehouses and suites are described as tranquil havens with contemporary furnishings and local timbers. They feature king-size beds with fine linens, spacious modern bathrooms (often with rain showers), and private balconies complete with lounges and hammocks, offering peaceful views of the Mossman River or the rainforest. Many rooms boast outdoor stone tubs, allowing for a unique "jungle-bathing" experience under the stars. The Daintree Pavilion offers an even more luxurious experience with an infinity-edge plunge pool and spacious indoor/outdoor lounging areas. In-room amenities typically include air conditioning, ceiling fans, music systems, and a well-stocked complimentary mini-bar. The decor is refined and understated, ensuring the rainforest remains the focal point.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Silky Oaks Lodge is a celebrated experience, primarily at the open-sided Treehouse Restaurant, which overlooks the Mossman River. The focus is on a contemporary Australian menu that highlights the abundance of fresh, local ingredients from Tropical North Queensland's "rich food bowl," including produce from the lodge's own kitchen garden. Guests enjoy a full four-course dinner with bread and a starter, often paired with premium Australian wines. Breakfast is complimentary and features Daintree tropical fruits, fresh juices, local coffee and tea, homemade breads, and a variety of hot dishes like eggs, bacon, and pancakes. Lunch, also served in the Treehouse Restaurant, is a relaxed yet refined two or three-course affair showcasing seasonal flavors. Evening drinks and canapés are also a generous inclusion.
5. Service & Staff
The hospitality at Silky Oaks Lodge consistently receives glowing reviews. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "consistently fantastic, lovely, and friendly". The young, international team is well-trained and demonstrates palpable enthusiasm for the spectacular setting. Their attention to detail, from knowing guests by name to accommodating preferences, contributes significantly to the feeling of being "welcomed and special". The staff are also praised for their knowledge and assistance in organizing excursions and ensuring a seamless stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
Silky Oaks Lodge is ideally situated on 80 acres of pristine rainforest bordering the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park, overlooking the Mossman River. It is approximately 60 minutes' drive north of Cairns Airport and 20 minutes from Port Douglas, making it a luxurious base to explore both the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The scenic drive from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway is an attraction in itself. The lodge offers daily complimentary shuttle transfers to and from Port Douglas. While self-driving is a popular option, private transfers by road or helicopter can also be arranged. The lodge's riverside location also offers direct access to activities like drift snorkeling and river swimming in croc-free waters.
7. Value & Pricing
Silky Oaks Lodge is considered a high-end luxury retreat. Stays typically start from around $1300 per night for a Rainforest Retreat, which often includes breakfast, a la carte dinners with wine pairings, signature evening drinks, morning yoga, and access to lodge activities and transfers to Port Douglas. Various packages are available, such as the "Silky Escape" for a minimum of three nights, offering significant savings and bonus credits for the spa and restaurant. While expensive, guests frequently feel it is "worth the cost" for the immersive experience, exceptional service, and generous inclusions.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points have been noted by some guests:
- Outdoor Shower Temperature: One guest noted that the outdoor "Bali-style" shower, while refreshing, only provided cold water.
- Temporary Amenity Closures: On occasion, due to heavy rain or maintenance, river activities or the pool might be temporarily unavailable, which can be disappointing.
- Privacy of Balconies: While generally private, one review mentioned that not all room balconies had equal levels of privacy.
- Bugs: As expected in a rainforest environment, while the lodge itself is generally free of mosquitos, guests venturing to nearby areas like Mossman Gorge are advised to be prepared with repellent.

The chef at Silky Oak Lodge is so talented and creative and if you are with someone with a food allergy they are so very talented to make you feel they created a dish just for you that is amazing. The massage at the spa is transcendent. A beautiful place, great spa and the food is incredible.

I had the absolute pleasure of treating myself to two of the spa services offered at Silky Oaks Lodge - Soul to Sole and Pure Radiance. The experience was 10+ stars. A special thank you to my therapist Mu who facilitated such a safe container that allowed for deep relaxation. I cannot thank the entire team enough for their kindness, professionalism and efforts in creating such a nurturing experien...

Today we visited Silky Oaks Lodge as we are looking for a special place to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. Because it’s a significant occasion, we drove out to the property hoping to get a feel for the atmosphere beyond what a website can convey. At the gate we rang reception and were told that everything we needed was on the website, that it is a private property, and that we couldn’t be...

It's an experience! Silky Oaks has to be one of the most beautiful resorts in Queensland. Surrounded by rainforest, and a cold, crocodile free, river running through. This little slice of heaven is someplace you NEED to visit if your in the area. My Wife and I visited back in May as part of our Australian wedding adventure and couldn't be happier with the stay. We wish we had more time there and w...

Fantastic Location – Next to the Mossman River (Daintree National Park) the cabins are separated in a way that makes you feel like you have the rain forest to yourself. The open area dining/bar areas (Tree House and Marrdja Pavilion) overlook the river. Food choices are good and the nightly special cocktail is a treat – the bartender is “intense” in his craft and makes excellent cocktails.

Thank you for your lovely review, Dale. We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed your stay.

Did lunch. Service and location lovely. Food extremely average and disappointing for the fine dining and quality one would expect. The Wagyu was chewy and fatty and menu rather basic in choice. Need to go ala carte and move away from set menu. Won’t be going again when there’s stunning restaurants in Port.
