Expert Review: Shangri-La Phnom Penh

Shangri-La Phnom Penh: A Michelin One-Key Oasis of Luxury on the Mekong

The Shangri-La Phnom Penh stands as a beacon of luxury and refined hospitality in Cambodia's vibrant capital, having earned a prestigious Michelin One-Key rating. Guests consistently laud the property for its exceptional service, stunning river views, and an all-encompassing experience that often exceeds expectations.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Shangri-La Phnom Penh is overwhelmingly positive, with aggregated guest ratings frequently ranging from 9.0 to 9.8 out of 10. Terms like "exceptional," "outstanding," "luxury," and "wonderful" are commonly used to describe stays here.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of the Shangri-La Phnom Penh. The exceptional service provided by professional and friendly staff is a recurring highlight. The amazing breakfast spread, offering both Western and Asian options, is another standout feature. The hotel's stunning views, particularly of the Mekong River, are a major draw. Luxurious facilities, including a magnificent rooftop infinity pool, a well-equipped gym, and a serene spa, contribute significantly to guest satisfaction. The clean, tidy, and upscale environment also leaves a strong positive impression.

Room Quality

The 303 rooms and suites at Shangri-La Phnom Penh are described as elegant, clean, and comfortable, blending Art Deco, Neo-Classical, and traditional Khmer cultural elements. They feature warm wood accents, natural stone, and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic views of the city or the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Tonle Bassac rivers. In-room amenities include plush bathrobes, hair dryers, state-of-the-art televisions with satellite and cable channels, high-quality linens and towels, and luxurious toiletries. While generally well-received, some guests have noted that rooms might be considered slightly smaller compared to Phnom Penh standards, and some earlier feedback mentioned the presence of powder coffee instead of a Nespresso machine.

Dining Experience

Shangri-La Phnom Penh offers an exquisite and diverse culinary journey. Kommune Dining & Social Space provides international cuisine and authentic Khmer dishes like Beef Lok Lak and Fish Amok. Shang Palace, the hotel's signature Chinese restaurant, offers authentic Cantonese cuisine with Sichuan highlights, including handcrafted dim sum and the renowned Peking Duck. For lighter fare and artisan treats, The Atelier serves homemade pastries, specialty coffee, and premium teas. For elevated evenings, Altitude, Cambodia's highest rooftop bar and steakhouse, pairs skyline views with steaks, seafood, and expertly crafted cocktails. The breakfast buffet is consistently highlighted as exceptional, featuring an extensive array of international and local options.

Service & Staff

The hospitality at Shangri-La Phnom Penh is frequently cited as one of its strongest assets. Guests consistently describe the staff as "top-notch," "friendly," "helpful," "professional," and "well-trained." The team is praised for creating a welcoming atmosphere and for their proactive and attentive service.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an enviable waterfront location in Koh Pich, a vibrant and developing area of Phnom Penh. It is part of a striking tri-tower architectural landmark that contributes to the city's skyline. The location offers panoramic views of the Mekong River and is conveniently close to attractions such as the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Center and Aeon Mall Phnom Penh. Public transport access is convenient, with a bus stop nearby. Phnom Penh International Airport is approximately 15 km or 25 km away, and the hotel offers airport transfer services. Nearby cultural sites include the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Royal Palace.

Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star property and a Michelin One-Key hotel, the Shangri-La Phnom Penh operates at a premium price point. Average room prices typically range from $201 to $250 per night, which is considerably higher than the city's average of $51-$75. Despite the higher cost, many guests feel it offers "exceptional value" and is "worth every penny" for the unparalleled comfort, impeccable service, and sophisticated experience it provides.

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have surfaced. A significant complaint mentioned an unpleasant incident at the 49th-floor bar where a staff member made a female guest uncomfortable. Some earlier reviews noted that the adjacent mall was not yet fully operational, which might have impacted the overall impression of the surrounding area for some guests. Additionally, one guest expressed disappointment over the use of powder coffee instead of a Nespresso machine, considering it below standard for a hotel of this caliber and price. Some initial reviews, given the hotel's relatively recent opening (December 2024 for phase one), also indicated that it was "half open" with some facilities still being finalized.

Beautiful hotel newly opening in the middle of Phnom Penh city. A perfect spot for tourists and people who love to stay inside inner city down town which is close to everything. The service is amazing, the location is perfect and the food is delicious. The rooms are specious and clean and beautiful, I really love the gym facilities, and rooftop restaurants.

The view from the hotel is good. The hotel is still very new and only just passed 1 year since its opening. The staff are generally very attentive and friendly trying their best to serve. The selection of drinks and food offered during cocktail hour is a bit too limited. Overall they still have some room to catch up with other Shangrila outlets but I spent a good time here.

5 star hotel with all the amazing amenities, BUT I have to point out one small thing that somehow one can only find at very high-end priced hotels - the bed sheets were not tucked in, which is how it should be! Why do hotels below $200 USD tuck in the bedsheets… it looks nice, yes, but when it’s bed time we have to pull out the whole thing and the bed is a total mess. 6 star rating for housekeepin...
