This exclusive collection of lodges offers an unparalleled blend of classic elegance, exceptional wildlife encounters, and deeply personalized service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Royal Malewane garners overwhelmingly positive sentiment, frequently described as "ultra-luxurious", "phenomenal", and the "pinnacle of safari luxury". Guests often refer to their stay as a "life-changing" and "unforgettable" experience, highlighting a feeling of being in a private world in the African bush. Its recognition with Three Michelin Keys, the highest award, firmly establishes it as an extraordinary stay in the hospitality sector.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several core aspects of Royal Malewane:

  • Unrivaled Safari Experience: The lodge is renowned for having "some of the best animal sighting areas in South Africa", with expert guides and trackers who are considered among the most qualified in Africa, including Master Trackers. Guests regularly report seeing the Big Five, often within 24 hours. The private game drives, which often go off-road, ensure intimate wildlife encounters.
  • Exceptional Service & Personalization: The staff are frequently described as "extremely friendly," "going above and beyond," and creating a "non-hotel, intimate feel" that resembles "arriving at my super fabulous aunt's home in the bush". The highly personalized service includes chefs curating daily menus and staff remembering individual preferences.
  • Luxurious Design & Ambiance: The lodges offer a blend of "timeless, classic elegance" with "eclectic design," vibrant colors, and African artifacts. Persian rugs, antique furnishings, and carefully curated items contribute to a sophisticated yet cozy atmosphere.
  • World-Class Spa: The Waters of Royal Malewane Bush Spa is consistently praised as an "oasis of a very special sort" and has been voted Best Safari Spa in Africa. It offers luxurious treatments, a heated lap pool, steam room, and African baths, all set amidst the serene bush.

3. Room Quality

Royal Malewane offers a range of luxurious accommodations, including Luxury Suites, Royal Suites, and exclusive-use villas (Africa House, The Farmhouse, Waterside House). All rooms are designed for utmost comfort and relaxation.

  • Design & Comfort: Suites are described as "palatial," "opulent," "luxuriously appointed," and fully air-conditioned. The decor leans towards "elegant colonial style" with modern comforts subtly integrated. Features include mahogany four-poster beds, plush bedding, traditional African artifacts, and working fireplaces.
  • Amenities: Each suite typically boasts a large living area, an extravagant bathroom with a window-side Victorian bath, twin vanities, and indoor and outdoor showers.
  • Private Outdoor Spaces: A significant highlight is the huge private outside deck, complete with a crystal-clear plunge pool and thatched gazebos, offering "unparalleled views" of the bushveld and ensuring complete privacy. Some villas also include private jacuzzis.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Royal Malewane is considered a "culinary experience in itself" and "definitely not your standard safari fare".

  • Cuisine: The menu is Afro-Mediterranean, focusing on "delicious game and freshwater fish" and utilizing fresh, local ingredients, including vegetables and herbs from the hotel's organic farm.
  • Personalization: Executive chefs often chat with guests to curate personalized menus.
  • Settings: Meals are served in a variety of memorable locations, such as the main dining room with views of a watering hole (where elephants are often spotted), under the African stars, in Bedouin tents lit by Moroccan lanterns, or even on private decks. Bush dinners are a unique experience.
  • Inclusions: All meals, snacks, and premium South African wines and beverages (excluding French Champagne) are typically included in the rates. Private chefs are also available for Royal Suites and villas.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Royal Malewane is a consistent highlight, praised for its exceptional quality and personalization.

  • Hospitality: Staff members are described as "highly trained and attentive," providing a "memorable experience" that often exceeds expectations. They are known for going "above and beyond" to make each stay special.
  • Expert Guiding Team: The guides and trackers are exceptionally qualified, with Royal Malewane boasting some of the highest-qualified individuals in Africa, including Master Trackers. They offer "detailed insights into the complex and fascinating ecosystems".
  • Intimate Feel: Many guests appreciate the "non-hotel, intimate feel" and the sense that staff become like family, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere. Butler service is also available for Royal Suites and villas.

6. Location & Accessibility

Royal Malewane is strategically located for prime safari viewing.

  • Neighborhood: It is situated within the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, which shares an unfenced border with the Greater Kruger National Park. This allows animals to roam freely, leading to frequent wildlife sightings near the lodges, including elephants at the watering hole.
  • Accessibility: The lodge is easily accessible by air. Daily flights connect Johannesburg or Cape Town to Hoedspruit (Eastgate) Airport, followed by a comfortable 35-45 minute road transfer arranged by the lodge. Guests can also charter flights directly to Royal Malewane's private Jackalberry Airstrip within the reserve.
  • Attractions: Beyond game drives and bush walks, the spa is a major attraction. The K-9 anti-poaching unit is also a fascinating program worth visiting. The region offers spectacular scenery, and excursions to nearby attractions like the Blyde River Canyon or a bushveld golf course can be arranged.

7. Value & Pricing

Royal Malewane is positioned as an ultra-luxury safari destination, and its pricing reflects the exceptional, all-inclusive experience it offers.

  • Pricing: Rates are premium, typically ranging from ZAR 30,000 – 45,000 per person per night for Luxury Suites and ZAR 50,000 – 80,000 for Royal Suites and exclusive-use villas.
  • Inclusions: The "all-inclusive" package covers accommodation, all meals and snacks, premium South African wines and beverages, full mini-bar, transfers to/from Jackalberry Airstrip, laundry service, and two daily game drives and bush walks. Spa treatments and certain levies are typically excluded.
  • Worth the Cost: Despite the high price point, guests consistently regard Royal Malewane as offering "great value for money plus top quality experience" given the level of luxury, personalized service, and unparalleled safari opportunities. It's seen as an investment in a truly "life-changing" and "ultimate luxury" experience.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of criticism or observation have been noted:

  • Limited Time: Some guests expressed a desire for more time to experience everything the lodge offers, indicating that even a week might not be enough to fully indulge in all activities and relaxation opportunities.
  • Sighting Crowding (Contextual): While Royal Malewane strives for intimate sightings by limiting vehicles to two per sighting, one reviewer mentioned that in busier periods or specific areas of the larger conservancy, one might occasionally find themselves in a queue for a sighting. However, this did not detract from excellent wildlife viewings.
  • "Non-Authenticity" (Perspective): A very minor and niche critique, not universally shared, suggests that some ultra-luxury lodges might be seen as less "authentic" by those seeking a more rustic safari. However, the vast majority of guests appreciate Royal Malewane for its refined blend of nature and luxury.

We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary by staying at the Malawane Lodge in Kruger. It was an outstanding experience. Everyone was so professional and couldn’t do enough for us. Most importantly, we were struck by their genuine kindness and truly worked to give us the best experience possible. Stefan, the GM, was wonderful and runs the Lodge impeccably. We would highly recommend them!

My family member was injured on a game ride by Royal Malewane. However, the team at Royal Malewane brushed it off and refuses to take responsibility. Expensive but horrible service. Avoid. When we emailed in, they brushed us off and asked us to claim travel insurance instead.

We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Malewane Waterside Lodge from 15 October to 17 October 2023. The service, food and the room were impeccable. Andi and Jeffrey took us on three days of amazing nature rides. We saw the Big 5 and much more. What particularly stood out was the way that the staff treated us as though we were part of the family. We would go back again without hesitation.
