Room Quality
Priory Wareham offers 17 individually styled rooms and suites, some featuring original wooden beams, located in the main house or the riverside Boat House. Each room is thoughtfully designed with a blend of antique furnishings and elegant 20th-century pieces, featuring contemporary comforts like sumptuous beds and walk-in showers. Many rooms offer captivating views of the Purbeck Hills, the tranquil gardens, the River Frome, or the intimate courtyard. The Boat House suites are particularly popular, with some boasting terraces and river views. However, some guests have noted that certain basic rooms can be small, and the bed size might be an issue if not specified during booking. Minor criticisms include a lack of drawers in some rooms and, in isolated cases, opaque glass ensuite doors or inconvenient mirror/lighting placement in bathrooms.
Dining Experience
The hotel offers a highly regarded dining experience through its two restaurants: The Garden Room and JJ's. The Garden Room is the fine-dining venue, housed in a beautiful oak-framed contemporary space with glass walls overlooking the lawns and river. Head chef Stephan Guinebault, with classical French training, crafts dishes using impeccably sourced local and seasonal British ingredients. Guests have raved about dishes such as pan-fried scallops, succulent Dover sole, and Devon Red Ruby beef chateaubriand.
Breakfast is "delicious" and "spot on," offering a range of options including Continental, Full English/Irish, Vegetarian, Vegan, and Gluten-free choices. Afternoon Tea, featuring delicate sandwiches, homemade scones, and delectable sweets, is also a popular indulgence, served on the terrace or in the John Turner room. JJ's is described as a new underground speakeasy bar offering a more informal yet special dining and drinking experience. While dining is generally excellent, one past guest reported limited vegetarian options and an "awful" risotto, though a full refund was provided. Another mentioned that bar staff knowledge for mixing drinks was a slight letdown.
Service & Staff
The service at Priory Wareham consistently receives glowing reviews, often highlighted as a key reason for repeat visits. Guests describe the staff as "superb," "incredible," "attentive," "friendly," "helpful," and committed to providing traditional hospitality. The family-owned nature of the hotel contributes to a personalized and welcoming atmosphere. However, some guests have expressed reservations about a discretionary 5% service charge added to the bill, finding it "cheeky" at the price point.
Location & Accessibility
Priory Wareham boasts an "excellent location" in the charming town of Wareham, situated beside the River Frome and surrounded by four acres of picturesque gardens. It offers a serene environment while being conveniently located "steps from the town center," with local shops and restaurants just a 10-minute walk away. The hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the best of Dorset, including the nearby Jurassic Coast, Corfe Castle (a 15-minute drive), Lulworth Cove, Studland Beach (a 20-minute drive), and Old Harry Rocks. Guests can enjoy direct access to river walks and the Wareham Walls walk from the doorstep, and boat charters are available on the River Frome. For transport, Wareham Train Station is within walking distance, and Holton Heath Train Station is a short drive away. The hotel provides free parking and electric vehicle charging stations.
Value & Pricing
Guests generally consider Priory Wareham to offer good value for its quality and service, with Booking.com rating its value for money at 8.4/10. Prices for B&B doubles typically start from around £240-£250. While the average room price of approximately $346 is higher than Wareham's city average, it is seen as excellent value for a luxury boutique hotel experience. However, some guests have felt that smaller rooms were overpriced for their size, and the additional discretionary 5% service charge has been a point of contention regarding overall value for some.
Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Room Size & Storage: A few guests found the basic rooms to be small and lacked sufficient drawer space for clothing, leading to living out of suitcases for short stays.
- Bathroom Functionality: Isolated complaints include opaque glass doors for ensuites affecting privacy, and inconvenient mirror placement or lighting that impacted tasks like shaving or drying hair.
- Discretionary Service Charge: The 5% discretionary service charge added to the bill was perceived as "cheeky" by some guests, especially given the hotel's price point.
- Limited Accessibility: Due to its Grade II listed status, the hotel does not have disabled bedrooms or lifts. Additionally, while welcoming, the hotel generally does not accommodate children under the age of 14, unless by special arrangement.

Dinner at The Priory was an absolute delight. Warm and welcoming with a lovely pianist playing in the drawing room. We felt we had our own private concert! The sommelier was so kind, generous, helpful and knowledgeable. The restaurant staff were friendly, happy and so thoughtful. Needless to say the food was excellent. All round, this was a truly memorable evening. Thank you.

Myself and a few friends of mine attended the priory for a wine tasting evening on 6th February in their Bar. I can honestly say we has the most amazing experience. The sommelier Christian was very knowledgeable and extremely attentive. The food they brought with each wine was exquisite and we all had the most amazing time. We will definitely recommend this great night.

Came here for lunch at the end of November. Service was fantastic - we were served by Christian and AJ, they were so attentive and great fun too. Food was exceptional. We had a coeliac in our party and they made sure his food was safe for him - it was also nice for him to have a lot of choice. Would definitely come here again.
