The property consistently receives perfect scores for cleanliness, facilities, comfort, and staff, and a near-perfect score for value for money and location.

2. Key Highlights

The most celebrated aspects of Palazzo Margherita revolve around its bespoke hospitality and exquisite design. As the personal passion project of Francis Ford Coppola, the palazzo has been meticulously restored to offer a "luxurious, authentically Italian experience".

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's unique character as "more family home than hotel" with its "Don-worthy decadence" yet relaxed atmosphere is a significant draw. French designer Jacques Grange oversaw the restoration, blending original architectural details with lavish, tasteful decor.
  • Personalized Service: The unobtrusive yet intuitive service makes guests feel like "honorary member[s] of the film-making dynasty."
  • Unique Amenities: Highlights include a screening room featuring 100 Italian films personally selected by Coppola, an "eat-in kitchen" where complimentary pasta-making lessons are offered, and a beautiful garden with a swimming pool.

3. Room Quality

Each room is a masterpiece of design, incorporating original details such as stone walls, hand-painted ceiling frescoes, clawfoot tubs, and handpainted tile floors.

  • Views & Layout: Many suites boast balconies or terraces offering picturesque views of the garden or the charming town. Room sizes vary, with options like the 753 sq ft Large King Suite with Balcony or the 366 sq ft Deluxe Queen Room.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Palazzo Margherita is an intimate affair, designed to feel like eating in a family home rather than a formal restaurant.

  • The Kitchen: Guests can enjoy rustic home-made Italian cuisine in the "eat-in kitchen" or in the charming courtyard. The menu emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients, including organic meats, cheeses, jams, honey, and vegetables from the palazzo's own garden.

  • Local Connection: Many staff members are from local families, contributing to the authentic and welcoming "family atmosphere."

6. Location & Accessibility

Palazzo Margherita is nestled in Bernalda, a charming, walled 15th-century hilltop town in Basilicata, which is the ancestral home of Francis Ford Coppola's grandfather.

  • "Undiscovered Italy": The town is "far away from the tourist trail" and described as an "undiscovered region," offering a chance to experience "the real Italy" away from typical tourist crowds.
  • Nearby Attractions: The hotel is a short 10-20 minute drive from the pristine white sand beaches of the Ionian coast. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera, famous for its ancient cave dwellings (Sassi di Matera), is approximately a 40-minute drive away.
  • Transport: The nearest airports are Bari (BRI) and Brindisi (BDS), both about a 90-minute drive from the palazzo. The Metaponto train station is a 10-15 minute drive. Given its location, a car is considered "essential" for exploring the surrounding countryside, though the hotel offers valet parking.

7. Value & Pricing

While considered a luxury 5-star experience, guests generally rate the Palazzo Margherita highly for "value for money" (9.8 on Booking.com). Rates include a range of benefits such as breakfast, in-room drinks, cooking lessons, and a beach club shuttle, enhancing the overall value.

  • Location Accessibility: While praised for its "off the beaten track" charm, guests acknowledge that a car is necessary for navigating the region, although valet parking is provided.

I had dinner here once and coffee a number of times. Dinner was by father the best I had in Bernalda. Atmosphere, decor and music was divine. And outside seating was my favourite in Bernalda for musing and people watching. The only thing that would have made me like this place more was if the jukebox have been working, which apparently it will be soon!

Palazzo Margherita was an amazing stay - I didn't want to leave! The staff are so helpful and kind, the food is amazing (especially the potatoes) and the rooms were so nice! Pasta making was a great experience and now I know how to make it at home. The garden outside is amazing as well as the pool. I would definitely go again if I had the chance. Five STARS!! 🤩🤩🤩

This is a one-of-a-kind property that exceeds expectations on all dimensions. A jaw dropping gorgeously restored villa that dates back to the late 1800’s. The food, management and staff all are perfect. Literally planing our next visit as we walk out the gate. 10/10.

The hotel is beautiful and the staff attentive. We unfortunately had an issue in the room which was surprising given the cost, not fixed during the stay, and dealt with very poorly & rudely by the manager afterwards. This soured the entire experience and is well below expectations of a hotel like this. Would recommend saving your money and going to another hotel. Would not go back or to any of the...
