Expert Review: Palais Hassoun

Palais Hassoun, a Michelin Key Selected property in Marrakech, Morocco, offers guests an extraordinary and serene escape, blending traditional Indo-Moorish elegance with modern luxury. The general consensus among visitors is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting its exceptional service, stunning design, and peaceful ambiance.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Palais Hassoun consistently receives "Superb" ratings, with Booking.com showing an average of 8.9 out of 10, and Agoda reflecting similar high scores. Guests frequently describe their stays as "superb," "a dream come true," and "a haven of peace". The sentiment is one of profound relaxation and immersion in Moroccan culture, enhanced by impeccable hospitality.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by the design and grounds of Palais Hassoun, often likening it to a museum filled with amazing artifacts and paintings. The property boasts magnificent gardens spanning over 2 to 4 hectares, featuring palm trees, lush vegetation, an infinity swimming pool, and an ornamental pond. The architectural style, characterized by keyhole-shaped doors, terracotta-lined passageways, domes, and arcades, creates an ethno-chic atmosphere dedicated to relaxation and conviviality. Other cherished amenities include spa facilities, a sauna, a sun terrace, and a library filled with travel books. The exceptional food and personalized service are also consistently highlighted as major draws.

3. Room Quality

The nine rooms and suites at Palais Hassoun are described as comfortable, well-decorated, and individually styled, offering a blend of traditional charm and modern comfort. Each room features air-conditioning, a private bathroom, a mini-bar, a TV, and complimentary WiFi. Bathrooms are luxurious, often lined in rich green marble with soaking or jetted tubs. Some suites offer private living rooms and views of the gardens or pool, while a few have private patios and wraparound nature views from upper-level terraces. High ceilings and large doors in some rooms maximize natural light.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Palais Hassoun is a significant highlight, with a family-friendly restaurant offering a delectable array of local and international cuisines. Chef Fatima and Chef Pedro (Badr-Eddine) are noted for crafting subtle, flavorful, and fragrant Moroccan dishes, including traditional couscous and tagines, using organic ingredients from local farmers. The hotel caters to various dietary needs with halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options.

Breakfast is a rich continental spread, including pastries, homemade jams, Moroccan bread, wholemeal bread, and local specialties like msamem pancakes and amlou with argan oil. Lunch often features a buffet of fresh salads and quiches served on the terrace by the pool. In the evenings, a menu alternates between typical Moroccan dishes and international cuisine. Guests can also enjoy fresh fruit smoothies throughout the day and Moroccan mint tea with traditional pastries at tea time. For those interested in culinary arts, the hotel offers Moroccan cooking classes.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Palais Hassoun consistently receive glowing reviews, with guests praising them as "exceptional," "attentive," "friendly," "kind," and "welcoming". The owner and the team are described as passionate and going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable experience, making guests feel like royalty. Personalized service, generosity, and genuine hospitality are recurring themes in guest feedback. Manager Yaya is specifically mentioned for his welcoming demeanor.

6. Location & Accessibility

Palais Hassoun is situated in Oulad Snaguia, a tranquil, semi-rural area about 17 to 22 kilometers (approximately 15-20 minutes by car) from Marrakech-Menara Airport. It's nestled in beautiful countryside with views of the Atlas Mountains, providing a peaceful retreat away from the city's hustle and bustle. While not in the immediate city center, major attractions like Bahia Palace (21 km) and Djemaa El Fna (24 km) are accessible.

The hotel offers convenient transport facilities, including a complimentary car park and car hire services. The knowledgeable staff can also arrange tours and excursions to explore Marrakech's souks, museums, historical sites, golf courses, and even hot air balloon rides or desert trips.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests generally consider Palais Hassoun to offer good value for money, with Booking.com and Agoda reviews giving it a rating of 9.0 and 9.1 respectively. While positioned as an upscale and luxury property, the comprehensive amenities, exceptional service, and unique experience contribute to its perceived worth. Pricing can vary, with options for individual room bookings or entire villa rentals for groups. For group accommodations, weekly prices can start from €17100 for 9 bedrooms sleeping 2-18 guests. Half-board and full-board packages are also available at €35 and €49 per person, respectively.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, one isolated review mentioned a "very painful experience dealing with the staff and owner" regarding a wedding celebration. However, this feedback stands in stark contrast to the vast majority of reviews praising the staff and service. Another point for families to note is the child policy, which requires children to be charged at the standard rate, as complimentary stays for younger guests are not permitted. For some, the location outside the immediate city might be a consideration, though it is clearly positioned as a peaceful retreat and offers easy access to the city through its services.

My family and I had the most wonderful stay at Palais Hassoun. They made sure that we were totally comfortable. Everyone needs to do the Hammam treatment and massage. The food was delicious and grounds were absolutely breathtaking.

We stayed as three mums with three babies and felt incredibly looked after. Palais Hassoun is beautifully designed with stunning art, and the rooms were very spacious, clean and very comfortable. Huge thank you to Ismael, and the cook for really delicious meals (in the Michelin guide) and to our host Alain — they truly went above and beyond to make our stay easy and memorable. Highly recommended!

While we love the stunning venue of Palais Hassoun, it was a very painful experience dealing with the staff and owner. We booked the villa for 4 days to have our wedding celebration. They mishandled our alcohol terribly (to the point that a bottle of wine had water and served to our guests) and our meals even thou multiple communication was sent prior to check in. We got charged 10 eur each for th...

There’s no better place to end our journey through this beautiful country and reminisce the experiences we’ve had. The location is like paradise. The staff is treating us like family and the owner is happy to give you a tour of his collection of one of a k...
