Expert Review: Olema House Point Reyes

Olema House Point Reyes: A Serene Retreat with Rustic Charm and Modern Comfort

Olema House Point Reyes, nestled on the edge of the breathtaking Point Reyes National Seashore, stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property offering a unique blend of turn-of-the-century architecture and contemporary boutique style. This charming lodge, just an hour north of San Francisco, provides a tranquil escape amidst coastal wilderness and lush gardens.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Olema House Point Reyes is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "super cute and clean", "extraordinary", "serene", and a "peaceful getaway". The property consistently receives high ratings for cleanliness (9.5), location (9.5), comfort (9.4), and staff performance (9.1) on various booking platforms. While most reviews reflect an exceptional experience, some guests express reservations about the value for money, particularly concerning breakfast options and room sizes.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Olema House for several standout features:

  • Idyllic Location: Its prime position on Coastal Highway 1, adjacent to the Point Reyes National Seashore, offers unparalleled access to nature and outdoor activities.
  • Beautiful Grounds & Design: The four acres of tranquil lawns and gardens, adorned with flowers and a year-round creek, create a picturesque and relaxing atmosphere. The hotel's design beautifully marries its distinctive turn-of-the-century architecture with a contemporary, eclectic aesthetic.
  • Communal Spaces: Excellent communal areas, including a cozy lounge and outdoor spaces with Adirondack chairs, are appreciated by visitors.
  • Due West Tavern & Market: The on-site restaurant and market, Due West, is frequently highlighted for its modern tavern ambiance, farm-to-fork cuisine, and convenient picnic offerings.
  • Pet-Friendly: The hotel is welcoming to pets (with a fee), providing bowls and treats.
  • EV Charging: The availability of EV charging stations is a convenient amenity for guests.

3. Room Quality

Olema House features 22 individually designed rooms and two spacious cottages, each thoughtfully appointed. Rooms are described as "lovely" and offering a "chill vibe". Common amenities include private bathrooms, radiant-heat warmed floors, down comforters and pillows, free in-room WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary bottled water. Some rooms boast dramatic vaulted ceilings, private balconies, or cozy fireplaces. The Creekside Cottage and Drake Suite are particularly noted for their privacy, space, and unique features like mezzanine bedrooms and bay window seats.

However, some guests have noted a few issues, including the occasional lack of air conditioning, which can be noticeable on warmer days. There have also been mentions of "odd design" in some bathrooms, such as a toilet in a separate room without a sink. Some visitors felt certain rooms did not fully reflect the ambiance portrayed in promotional pictures, and limited closet space was sometimes a concern.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Olema House is primarily centered around Due West Tavern and Due West Market.

  • Due West Tavern: Housed in a refurbished 1860s saloon, Due West offers a modern, hyper-local, farm-to-fork menu emphasizing seasonal ingredients from West Marin, including Tomales Bay oysters, local organic produce, and meats/dairy from Point Reyes ranches. Guests praise the "utterly fantastic" food and craft cocktails. It serves brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour.
  • Due West Market: This classic country store iteration provides a coffee bar with Equator coffee, breakfast sandwiches, house-baked pastries, and picnic essentials like freshly prepared sandwiches and salads, ideal for day trips into the national seashore.

While Due West Tavern and Market receive high marks, the "breakfast experience" directly offered by the hotel (separate from the market's grab-and-go options) has been a point of criticism, with one reviewer calling it a "joke" due to limited options and missing items.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Olema House generally receive high praise. Guests describe the team as friendly, helpful, professional, excellent, and attentive. Reviewers appreciate the staff's ability to provide personalized recommendations for local attractions and their promptness in addressing requests or concerns. The responsiveness and efficiency of the event staff for private functions also stand out.

6. Location & Accessibility

Olema House is ideally situated in Olema, directly on Coastal Highway 1, offering a strategic base for exploring the Point Reyes area. It's less than two hours from San Francisco, providing a convenient yet immersive escape into nature.

The surrounding area boasts a wealth of attractions:

  • Point Reyes National Seashore: The hotel is on its doorstep, providing access to endless hiking trails, kayaking excursions, and stunning beaches like Sculptured Beach, Limantour Beach, and Heart's Desire Beach.
  • Local Landmarks: Close proximity to the iconic Point Reyes Lighthouse, the picturesque Cypress Tree Tunnel, Chimney Rock, Tule Elk Preserve, and the S.S. Point Reyes Shipwreck in Inverness.
  • Charming Towns: The nearby town of Point Reyes Station offers quaint shops, bakeries (like Bovine Bakery), and Cowgirl Creamery.
  • Experiences: Guests can enjoy activities such as bioluminescent kayaking, whale watching, and visiting local art galleries and wineries.
  • Transport: The hotel offers free self-parking and EV charging stations.

7. Value & Pricing

Rates for Olema House begin at approximately $300 USD per night. Other sources indicate typical prices for a King room can range from $321 to $380. Some guests feel it offers good value for its luxury and comfort, especially compared to other hotels in the area. However, "value for money" is also a common point of contention. Some guests expected more for the price, particularly concerning the limited breakfast options and perceived room sizes. There is also a $35 daily amenity fee per room, which covers parking, WiFi, a coffee/tea station, and complimentary water and wine in the rooms.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, recurring criticisms include:

  • Lack of Air Conditioning: Some guests wished for AC, especially on warmer days, noting the coastal climate doesn't always keep things cool enough.
  • Breakfast Quality: The complimentary breakfast offered directly by the hotel has received negative feedback for being insufficient or poorly stocked, leading guests to seek options elsewhere.
  • Room Size/Design: A few guests felt some rooms were smaller than expected for the price, or had unconventional bathroom layouts (e.g., toilet in a separate room without a sink).
  • Deposit Issues: One guest reported being charged an $800 deposit instead of the stated $100, though this seems to have been an error.
  • Broken Amenities: An isolated report of a broken jacuzzi bath in a room was noted.
  • Limited Seating in Rooms: One review mentioned only one chair in the room, which needed to be moved for lighting access, suggesting a need for at least two chairs.

We've driven by this spot a few times, and I am thrilled we finally made the time to stay. Olema House is a beautiful property, with nice rooms and linens, and spectacular grounds. Sitting out back listening to the creek is so peaceful, and I love that they're dog friendly. We used this as our home base and explored the neighboring trails and small towns. Great vibes. Can definitely recommend.

We stayed here for a quick birthday getaway and, overall, had a very enjoyable experience. The property is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and the restaurant and grounds were excellent. Service throughout the stay from Kyle, the restaurant staff, and the businesses in Point Reyes Station was warm and welcoming. The only downside was the arrival experience, which felt unnecessarily rigid and poo...

Paulina the event manager and her staff were very attentive to ensure everyone was happy and had what they needed. The ceremony site was beautiful and the dining area was perfect. The food was served family style and was s...

Beautiful room, but really should be for a couple day stay or longer. The split level makes for a great view, but given that there is no elevator to the third floor, then hauling your suitcase to effectively the fourth floor is not something that you want to do for an overnight stay. There is a pretty limited parking by the hotel, but the parking lot on the far side of the tavern and restaurant (...

This review is specifically about the Drake Suites. We have stayed at Olema House every year for the past five years, always in Room 18, the original Drake Suite and the one featured in all photos and descriptions on the hotel website. The website now lists multiple Drake Suites and invites guests to call if they have a preference between the bay window or balcony. I called and believed my stron...
