  • Design & Architecture: The hotel is celebrated for its immaculate and beautifully designed contemporary architecture, which harmoniously integrates with the delicate rainforest surroundings.
  • Amenities & Activities: A wide array of activities are offered, catering to various interests and fitness levels. These include guided hikes (short walks to expert long hikes, waterfall treks, night walks), the unique Sky Bike, an observation tower, a Life Centre with a butterfly farm, a hummingbirds area, a spa for massages and treatments, a jacuzzi, and a yoga deck. Guests are provided with essential gear like wellies, ponchos, and reusable water bottles.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at Mashpi Lodge are characterized as immaculate, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. They feature huge, comfortable beds, a sofa, chair, and writing desk, along with ample wardrobe and drawer space. The highlight of each room is the panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass wall, offering majestic views of the cloud forest, making guests feel like they are in a treehouse. Bathrooms are well-equipped with double sinks, massive walk-in showers, separate WCs, and in suites, a huge soaking tub right by the window. Eco-friendly, paraben-free toiletries, waffle bathrobes, and slippers are provided. While the decor is understated with clean lines and neutral colors, it is designed to keep the focus on the natural beauty outside. Rooms generally do not have televisions, encouraging connection with nature.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Mashpi Lodge is consistently described as exceptional, especially considering its remote location. Meals are gourmet, with menus changing daily and highlighting Ecuadorian ingredients, nearly 80% of which are sourced from the surroundings.

  • Breakfast: A smorgasbord buffet of fresh fruit, Ecuadorian pastries, bread, and à la carte hot dishes like omelets.
  • Lunch: Features a salad bar and offers both a light sandwich menu or a three-course meal.
  • Dinner: A standout three-course à la carte menu with refined and relaxed options, including Ecuadorian-inspired dishes like seafood ceviches, octopus, beef shank pastas, and innovative vegetarian options.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Mashpi Lodge receive high praise for their warmth, friendliness, and exceptional helpfulness. Guests appreciate the personalized touches, such as staff greeting them by name and remembering dietary preferences. A significant portion of the staff (nearly 70%) are from local communities, offering unique insights into the region. The naturalist guides, many of whom grew up in the area, are described as walking encyclopedias, providing academic knowledge of the wildlife and plants. From drivers who share local history to a welcome party upon arrival, the immersive experience is supported by dedicated service.

6. Location & Accessibility

Mashpi Lodge is situated in a 1,200-hectare (3,000-acre) private reserve within the Andean cloud forest, approximately 900 to 1200 meters above sea level, northwest of Quito. The journey from Quito takes about three hours, often including a scenic but winding drive, with the last hour on a rough dirt road. Mashpi Lodge typically includes transfers to and from Quito in its rates. While public areas and ground floor Wayra Rooms are wheelchair accessible, the terrain for excursions can be challenging for those with mobility issues.

7. Value & Pricing

Mashpi Lodge is considered a luxury experience with a corresponding price tag, but guests generally deem it "absolutely worth it". The rates are all-inclusive, covering accommodations, all meals, non-alcoholic beverages, and a majority of the guided activities and excursions, as well as transfers from Quito. This comprehensive package contributes to the perceived value. Typical prices start around $1,098 USD per night plus taxes.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted:

  • Dietary Preferences: Occasionally, there has been a disconnect regarding dietary preferences at dinner, where vegetarian starters might be overlooked, despite being noted at lunch.
  • Transfer Journey: The last hour of the drive to the lodge can be bumpy and rough, which may be uncomfortable for individuals with back or neck problems. One guest also noted a lack of water offered on the bus during the transfer from Quito.
  • Wildlife Sightings: While rich in bird, insect, and reptile life, larger mammals like pumas or ocelots are rarely seen due to the dense foliage and their elusive nature, which can be a minor disappointment for some.
  • Room Luxury vs. Price: Some guests feel that while comfortable and well-designed, the rooms themselves might not always convey the utmost luxury suggested by the price tag, though the overall experience compensates for this.
  • Observation Tower Views: Views from the observation tower can be limited on cloudy days, which are frequent in a cloud forest environment.

Outstanding experience at Mashpi Lodge. The drive from Quito is memorable, and remarked on by all guests. 3.5 hours from airport with the final 45+ minutes on rough “roads”. Rooms very clean, dehumidifiers run during the day in the rooms to keep them very comfortable. Showers are top notch which is important; you are here because you enjoy exploring. This includes hiking in rain, swimming in wat...

Absolutely disgusted with the service from this so called “luxury” resort. They failed to book 2 rooms for our group of 3 adults. And seemed to think squishing 3 adults into 2 very narrow beds (pictured) was perfectly reasonable at USD2400 / night. Made no apology for their mistake so we turned around and took the horrible 4 hour trip back to Quito rather than stay at this ridiculously overpric...

Unfortunately, we were not able to stay at Mashpi Lodge, so I cannot comment on the service or the atmosphere on site. What I can comment on, however, is the communication and the way our situation was handled. Due to a serious and unexpected medical emergency, my husband had to be hospitalized a month before our planned stay, which made it impossible for us to travel. While the initial communicat...
