Les Bains Gardians in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive retreat into the heart of the Camargue, blending rustic charm with refined hospitality amidst a stunning natural landscape.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
Les Bains Gardians generally garners a strong positive sentiment, often described as a "very cozy and lovely place" with a "fantastic atmosphere". Guests frequently highlight its "beautiful setting," "unique," "quiet and comfortable" ambiance, and a "magical, relaxing" environment. Ratings on various platforms frequently range from "Very Good" to "Exceptional" (e.g., 8.0-10).
Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's:
- Location & Ambiance: Nestled in a serene natural environment within the Camargue Regional Nature Park, the property is surrounded by ponds, horses, and offers opportunities to spot flamingos and other wildlife directly from the bungalows. The atmosphere is consistently praised as natural, easy, and relaxed.
- Design & Aesthetics: The hotel boasts a "lovely ambiance and design" with "beautifully decorated" rooms and "design-minded rustic interiors" in its restored Gardian cottages.
- Amenities & Activities: The property offers two outdoor swimming pools (one bean-shaped), a hot tub, a tennis court, and an equestrian center for horse riding and pony club activities. Other activities include mountain biking, 4x4 excursions, canoeing, and hiking trails. A spa, including whirlpool baths and a sauna, was anticipated to be fully operational by July 2024. Free WiFi and private terraces are standard across accommodations.
Room Quality
The rooms at Les Bains Gardians are comfortable and "beautifully decorated," reflecting a blend of traditional Camarguaise architecture with modern amenities. Accommodations are offered in authentic "cabanes de gardians" (whitewashed, thatched cottages) or rooms within a traditional "mas," many offering private terraces with lake or garden views. Each room is equipped with air conditioning, a mini-bar, an office corner, bathrobes & slippers, a courtesy tray, a safe deposit box, and notably, a Marshall speaker for an enhanced acoustic experience. The entire property maintains a strict non-smoking policy. While generally well-regarded, some guests have noted a lack of practical items like luggage racks or an armchair.
Dining Experience
The hotel features Le Restaurant (formerly Le Pont des Bannes), serving short-circuit Mediterranean cuisine with local Camargue influences for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant's ambiance is elevated by artistic events, gypsy concerts, and DJ sets.
Breakfast is highly acclaimed, described as "VERY good" and "excellent". It's a comprehensive buffet featuring a wide selection of homemade breads, cakes, cheeses, cold meats, eggs, mushrooms, sausages, fruit juices, coffee, tea, yogurt, salmon, and fresh fruits. A Sunday brunch, including a seafood workshop, barbecue, fresh pasta, and an array of desserts, is also available. A cocktail bar, Le Pont des Bannes, and a poolside bar provide refreshing drinks and a relaxed atmosphere. Some guests have, however, reported "awful" dinner service at times.
Service & Staff
The staff at Les Bains Gardians are generally perceived as friendly, accommodating, and professional. Guests appreciate their efforts to make stays comfortable. However, some feedback indicates that staff can appear "somewhat nervous" and that dinner service, in particular, might require improvement. There have been isolated instances where guests felt a lack of proactive assistance, such as when seeking alternative options for booked activities.
Location & Accessibility
Les Bains Gardians is ideally situated in a tranquil natural setting within Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, nestled directly in the Camargue Regional Nature Park. This location offers guests a unique "side of France few travelers ever see". It's just an 8-minute walk from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Beach and moments away from the park itself. The hotel provides an excellent base for observing local flora and fauna, including wild horses and flamingos.
Accessibility is convenient, with Marseille airport approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes away, and Arles a 45-minute drive. Free self-parking is available on-site, and an area shuttle service can be arranged for an additional charge.
Value & Pricing
Pricing for Les Bains Gardians typically starts from around EUR 308 per night, though rates can fluctuate based on dates and specific hotel policies. Some listings show average prices around $274 or rates from $177. While many find the unique experience and setting to justify the cost, some guests have felt it was "too expensive" or "grossly overpriced" when considering certain service inconsistencies or amenities not being fully available. A city tax of EUR 1.87 per person per night is applied.
Common Complaints
Despite the largely positive reviews, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:
- Unpleasant Odors: Several guests have reported persistent "pestilential smells" or issues with blocked sewers in their rooms.
- Service Inconsistencies: While staff are generally friendly, dinner service has been specifically criticized as "awful" by some, and a general "nervousness" among staff was observed.
- Amenities Discrepancies: There have been complaints about advertised facilities, such as the spa or a second pool, not being fully operational or meeting expectations during some stays. The spa, in particular, was described as "mal équipée" (poorly equipped) and considered expensive at €90.
- Room-Specific Issues: Guests have mentioned issues like noisy ventilation (VMC) that made it difficult to sleep, a lack of blackout curtains leading to early morning light, and occasional "medium finishes" or overlooked cleaning details in areas like the dressing room. Some also desired more fresh water in rooms during hot weather.
- Perception of Value: A few guests felt the actual experience did not always match the online pictures or the price point, leading to a feeling of being "overpriced".
- Room Location: Some cottages are located far from the main reception and restaurants, which can be inconvenient, especially for older guests who might require a golf car for transport.

A few hiccups, but otherwise an amazing stay. A VERY UNUSUAL side of France most people outside of France don't know about. Abundant wildlife, Camargue white horses, Flamingos, and countless other species. The hotel has a fancy Dude-Ranch charm to it. Along with stables, pools, a spa and many things to do. A treat.

Amazing experience! The hotel was in a beautiful location, immersed in the nature. There is a river flowing near the whole hotel. The food was really good, the service a bit slow but nothing dramatic. The rooms were really cozy and well cleaned.

I couldn't be happier after my holidays at Les Bains Gardians. First and foremost the place is magical. The Camargue country is just breathtaking and the sunsets are out of this world. Beach is 5 minutes away. You can feel a real authenticity, far from the show off competition you get in other parts of the south of France. Then the hotel itself is really nice, the rooms are super comfy, it's this ...

My reservation of horseback riding was suddenly cancelled. I payed for it 230euros. To suit their schedule, I changed train and hotel and payed add 500euros. But finally, cancelled. Because the guide was injured, but they had only one guide. Unbelievable...not professional work. My biggest purpose of going to Camargue was horseback riding. They refund but it was one of my bucket list.... Complete...

A nice hotel in nature with beautiful lakes around and horses onsite. We especially enjoyed the restaurant, service and quality of food. There was also a lot of English-speaking staff. However, we thought the spa was a little overpriced at €225 for two to « privatise » a small cabane for 1h45m with a small jacuzzi, sauna and 2 30-minute massages. At a similar rate of €300+ per room per night we h...

Love the old farm house style bungalow! Specially appreciated there are a lot of hand crafted details in the interior: the bathroom with curved divider wall and mirror frame, the wooden panels to shade the lights from the window, the metal handles…enjoyed the view on our terrace. Breakfast has limited choices but good quality. Friendly staff. Lovely horses! Pros: - The bed is large, 180cm. And co...
