Expert Review: Malmaison Dundee

Malmaison Dundee, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive stay in the heart of Dundee, blending historic charm with modern flair. It is recognized by the Michelin Guide for its excellence in architecture, interior design, quality of service, personality, character, value, and contribution to the local area.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Malmaison Dundee is generally positive, with many guests praising its style, comfort, and prime location. Reviews often range from "very good" to "outstanding," though some experiences vary, with average ratings around 8.3 out of 10 on platforms like Booking.com. While many find it a luxurious and spotlessly clean choice, particularly for special occasions, some have noted inconsistencies in service and dining.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently highlight several aspects of Malmaison Dundee:

  • Location: Its exceptional position on Dundee's waterfront, directly opposite the train station, and within walking distance of major attractions like the V&A Dundee and Discovery Point, is consistently praised.
  • Design: The hotel, housed in the beautifully reconstructed former Tay Hotel, is noted for its unique, interesting, and modern space design, featuring a mixture of historic character and contemporary flair, including a prominent wrought iron Mathers staircase and a huge domed ceiling.
  • Service: Many guests commend the friendly, helpful, and attentive staff, especially at reception and in the bar.
  • Comfort: The comfortable beds and plush bedding are often mentioned, contributing to a good night's sleep.
  • Pet-Friendly: The hotel is a popular choice for guests traveling with dogs, offering amenities like a dog bed, bowls, and snacks, and allowing dogs in the bar area.

3. Room Quality

Malmaison Dundee offers various room types, including Standard, Club, Junior Suites, and Signature Suites, many with views of the River Tay or the cityscape. Rooms are generally described as spacious, clean, and well-appointed, boasting stylish furnishings and modern decor. The design often features dark brown and dark purple tones with moody lighting, creating a "Gothic decor" and a boutique atmosphere.

Key features and guest feedback on rooms include:

  • Beds: Consistently praised for being very comfortable, though some found them to be on the firmer side or noted occasional creaking.
  • Bathrooms: Often highlighted as beautiful and spacious, equipped with power showers, and sometimes featuring claw tubs or Jack and Jill showers, along with complimentary quality toiletries.
  • Amenities: Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, coffee/tea making facilities, hairdryers, and minibars.
  • Issues: Some guests have reported minor cleanliness issues such as dusty surfaces or mould in shower areas, maintenance concerns like leaking basins or dated fixtures, and inadequate heating leading to cold rooms. Noise from the street or neighboring rooms can also be an issue.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar serves lunch, dinner, and Sunday Brunch, focusing on classic and contemporary dishes crafted with locally sourced ingredients, often utilizing a Josper Grill. The bar is well-regarded for its comprehensive list of classic and quirky cocktails, wines, and beers.

  • Dinner: Reviews for dinner are mixed. Some guests have had "delicious" and "excellent" meals with attentive service and a buzzy atmosphere. Others, however, have found the food quality fairly poor, with starters being cold, steaks overcooked or lacking flavor, or a limited menu with unavailable options.
  • Breakfast: Described as "superb" and "well cooked" with a great spread of continental offerings, some guests have experienced long waiting times and overcooked or dried-out cooked breakfasts. There have also been complaints about cold food and a cold dining room during breakfast. Full breakfast is available for a surcharge.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is generally positive, with many guests praising the friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness of the team. Reception staff are often highlighted for their warm welcome. However, some experiences point to inconsistencies, including slow service in the bar and restaurant, and instances where guests felt unacknowledged by night reception staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

Malmaison Dundee boasts a prime waterfront location at 44 Whitehall Crescent, making it highly accessible and convenient for exploring the city.

  • Transport: It is just a two-minute walk from Dundee Train Station, and approximately 500m from the railway station. Dundee Airport is about a 9-minute car ride away.
  • Attractions: The hotel is within a casual stroll of major attractions, including the V&A Dundee museum (0.6 miles/few minutes walk), RRS Discovery (within viewing distance/short walk), Caird Hall (160m), and Dundee Contemporary Arts (0.3 miles). The shops, pubs, and restaurants of Central Dundee are all within a 10-minute walk.
  • Parking: There is no car parking on-site. The nearest car parks are Yeoman Shore (across the street), Greenmarket (a 5-minute walk), Caird Hall, and Discovery. Off-street parking is free between 6 pm and 8 am daily.

While some guests consider the hotel to offer good value for money, especially on deals, others have found it to be overpriced, suggesting that normal room rates might not be entirely justified compared to other options. The cost of breakfast is typically a surcharge, around £23 for adults.

I was very disappointed with my room here after wanting to stay here for a while, as the rooms online looked lovely, but our room was very basic nothing lovely about it was clean & tidy, but in the hallway leading to the room there was an awful unpleasant smell which did not disappear the whole time we were there it was not in the room thankfully. I used the toilet at the left side of the hotel w...

The rooms were nice with some nice furniture and handy bedside usb A and C sockets. Although, the pillows weren't great. The restaurant, however, was excellent and the service was very good. All the staff we encountered were very accommodating, especially when we needed to store items for a luncheon, too.

The hotel is a short walk from the railway station and there are bus routes running outside. Four of us booked a table for a meal. The entrance to the hotel looks superb, it was quiet, warm and inviting but strangely no-one about. It wasn't until we went up the stairs to the dining room that we eventually were approached by a server. We were taken to our table and placed our orders for food and dr...

I had the pleasure of staying here for business. When I arrived I was greeted by a very lovely receptionist. I was on the 4th floor and my room was great. Lovely comforting atmosphere. Excellent food and great and helpful staff. My only slight complaint is as unfortunately my room view was of the scaffolding on the building but that cannot be helped and posed no issue for me. I would love to ret...

What a fabulous event we had on Tuesday of this week. It was a charity event with Asbestos Action. The room was decorated amazingly, food great, the staff were outstanding, nothing was too much. I can honestly say best service in a long time. I can highly recommend a private function you will not be disappointed 😃
