Expert Review: Lovango Resort and Beach Club
Lovango Resort and Beach Club, nestled on its eponymous private island just off the coast of St. John in the US Virgin Islands, has distinguished itself as a Michelin Two-Key property, the only resort in the USVI to achieve this honor. It is praised for its "unpretentiously stylish, tastefully luxe, and perfectly laid-back" atmosphere, offering an intimate and sustainable Caribbean experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Lovango Resort and Beach Club is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "luxury retreat" and a "hidden gem". Many consider it a unique and unforgettable experience, blending deserted island seclusion with full-service resort amenities. The resort consistently garners rave reviews for its exceptional service, serene atmosphere, and stunning views. It has also been recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the "Top 10 Caribbean Resorts".
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Lovango:
- Service & Hospitality: The staff's warm, accommodating nature and quick, smiling service are frequently highlighted.
- Location & Scenery: Its private island setting, just a 10-minute ferry ride from St. John and St. Thomas, offers turquoise waters, coral reefs, and breathtaking views. The dual nature of the island, with a vibrant beach club and a quiet Crescent Beach, provides diverse experiences.
- Amenities: The 70-foot saltwater infinity pool with ocean views is a major draw. Other popular amenities include excellent snorkeling in the house reef (supported by a coral restoration project), hiking trails, a children's activity center, and beach games like oversized chess. Complimentary ferry service, daily breakfast, and snorkeling equipment are included for overnight guests.
- Design & Ambiance: The resort is celebrated for its inviting decor, luxury island flair, and a design ethos that incorporates local materials and sustainable practices, such as solar power.
3. Room Quality
Lovango offers a variety of luxurious accommodations, including luxury treehouses, villas, and glamping tents.
- Design and Comfort: Rooms are described as featuring "luxurious island flair" and offer stunning views, often with balconies and private bathrooms. The newer one-bedroom cottages, comparable to the treehouses, are solid wooden structures with metal roofs, large bedrooms and bathrooms, and small living areas with ample windows.
- Aesthetics: Interiors are designed in soft, warm earth tones, including cocoas, cognacs, and beiges, with extensive use of medium-tone carved woods and woven materials like wicker, rattan, and rope, reflecting Afro-Caribbean craft heritage. Outdoor showers are a celebrated comfort.
- In-Room Amenities: Standard amenities include air-conditioning, Nespresso coffee machines, iPads, minibars, hairdryers, irons, bathrobes, and Malin + Goetz bath products. Some rooms, like the three-bedroom villa, boast private pools. One treehouse is adapted to ADA standards, offering accessibility features.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Lovango is highly regarded, offering both casual and fine dining options with a focus on Caribbean-inspired cuisine and fresh, local ingredients.
- Breakfast: A daily family-style buffet breakfast, included in nightly rates, is served in a safari-tent setup at a higher point on the island, offering surrounding water views. It features abundant fresh fruit, strong locally-roasted coffee, frittatas, eggs, yogurt, granola, pancakes, and waffles. Breakfast typically starts at 8:30 a.m..
- Lunch: Casual lunch is available at The Sand Pit, located right on the sand with picnic-style and lounge tables. The menu includes gourmet pizzas, grain bowls, salads, and sandwiches, which can also be delivered to the pool, cabanas, and chaises.
- Dinner: Finer dining takes place at the ocean-front restaurant, with tables under beachfront trees and in a high-ceilinged clubhouse. Chef Kyle McKnight crafts Caribbean-inspired dishes featuring local seafood and produce from the kitchen garden. The lobster schnitzel and pillowy gnocchi with sea urchin are particularly praised. Dinner is served Sunday-Wednesday from 5:00-9:00 p.m. at the Waterfront Restaurant, with reservations required, and casual walk-up service at the Sandpit on Saturdays. Live music is offered on Wednesday and Saturday nights at the Waterfront Restaurant.
- Bars: The Sand Bar offers fruit-forward specialty cocktails, such as the watermelon basil margarita. Guests also appreciate creative off-menu cocktails like prickly pear margaritas.
5. Service & Staff
Exceptional service is a recurring highlight of guest experiences at Lovango. The staff is consistently described as warm, accommodating, quick, and friendly, possessing a genuine "hospitality gene". They are noted for their efficiency, from golf cart drivers safely transporting guests across the island to servers offering off-menu drinks and helping with reservations at other St. John restaurants. The resort's family-owned background, drawing from experience at other beloved island hotels, contributes to this high standard of hospitality. A 5% service charge is applied to lodging and is distributed among the entire team, including those working behind the scenes.
6. Location & Accessibility
Lovango Resort and Beach Club is situated on Lovango Cay, a private island in the US Virgin Islands, just a 10-minute ferry ride from St. John and St. Thomas. No passport is needed for U.S. citizens.
- Transportation: The resort provides a catamaran ferry service to and from St. John (Cruz Bay and Honeymoon Beach) and St. Thomas (Red Hook) for arrival, departure, and day trips. Private transfers from Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas to Red Hook can also be arranged. On-island shuttle service is available for guests.
- Neighborhood & Attractions: The island itself offers diverse experiences, with a lively beach club on the south side featuring a 70-foot infinity pool and activities, and the tranquil Crescent Beach on the north side, ideal for secluded relaxation and snorkeling in the bird sanctuary of Congo Cay. Guests can access some of the best local snorkeling right from the house reef. St. John provides access to more restaurants, bars, and the Virgin Islands National Park with its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and hiking trails.
- Accessibility Notes: While the resort's pathways are generally wheelchair-friendly, the steep hillside and the necessity of boat travel may pose challenges for guests with limited mobility.
7. Value & Pricing
Lovango Resort and Beach Club is considered a luxurious and pricey experience, but many guests find it to be "worth every penny". While the resort does not offer an all-inclusive option or loyalty benefits as an independent, family-owned property, nightly rates include a suite of complimentary amenities.
- Inclusions: These typically include daily buffet breakfast, resort catamaran ferry service, full access to the beach club with guaranteed seating, free Friday yoga classes, and complimentary snorkeling equipment.
- Additional Costs: Meals (beyond breakfast) are not included. Cabana rentals at the beach club are an additional cost, with prices ranging from $150 per person for a beach lounge to $245 per person for a beach or poolside cabana, often with minimum occupancy requirements for cabanas. Overnight guests typically receive a 20% discount on beach club amenities.
- Price Range: Room rates can be substantial, with a listed example of USD 1,344.38. Day visits to the beach club range from $95-$225 per person.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of feedback emerge:
- Breakfast Timing: Early risers with children have noted that breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m., which can be a bit late, though in-room Nespresso machines help.
- Accessibility for Infants: Some guests suggest the resort might be less ideal for "baby babies," with children aged five and up enjoying it more due to activities like chess, cornhole, and ladder ball.
- Walking on Island: While walking is encouraged, the return walk up the hill from the Village to accommodations can be "somewhat daunting" and is not recommended in rainy weather due to slippery surfaces. An on-island shuttle service is available, however.
- Limited Mobility: The resort's steep hillside and the need for boat travel might make it inaccessible for those with very limited mobility.
- No Lifeguard at Pool: The beach club's pool is child-friendly, but there is no lifeguard, requiring close supervision for tots.
- Resort Closures: Lovango Resort and Beach Club closes seasonally, for example, from July 18 to December 17, 2025.

This place is perfect. The food was excellent (even compared to my high New York City standards), the villa I stayed in was gorgeous and the service could not have been better. The people who work here are so kind and will go above and beyond for you any chance they get. The only names I remember are Rae and Garrett, but everyone was truly a pleasure to deal with. This place is family run, and the...

Had a wonderful time here at Lovango Resort. We were on a cruise on Explora II and came here for an excursion and spent the day here. The staff was very accommodating and attentive to our needs. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner and the manager. While here we enjoyed snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, the pool, hiking, corn hole, and a wonderful pizza. Highly recommend!

We have been looking forward to visiting Lavongo since we first set foot on St. John two years ago. The hike to the far side of the island was beautiful, but beach seating was not ideal for day-guests. Our boys enjoyed the gym, and many of the other resort offerings. The ability to get cleaned up and ready for dinner was less than accommodating, but the service was spot-on and, aside from the lob...

Great experience at Lovango Resort for a day trip from St. John. Service was attentive, and the food was of excellent quality. Serving sizes were almost too large. We had a great view of Jost Van Dyke, Tortola and St. John from the top of the hiking trail.
Response from the owner
Thanks for visiting Lovango for the day! Glad we were able to deliver amazing hospitality. The BVI lookout on the hike is pretty amazing.

We come on a rainy day and the staff was so gracious and attentive, putting us in a cabana, which I highly recommend. The food was very good, the location lovely. I did the hike to the top of the island and the views are stunning.
Response from the owner
Even a rainy day can't keep the good vibes away! Glad you enjoyed the beach club. 5 stars!
