Expert Review: Les Tilleuls

Les Tilleuls in Étretat, France, a Michelin Key Selected property, is consistently praised for its unique charm, exceptional hospitality, and prime location, offering a serene and memorable stay for most guests.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Les Tilleuls generally receives overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many guests rating their experience as "Exceptional" (10/10). The sentiment is largely one of delight and relaxation, with visitors frequently expressing a desire to return. While a few isolated negative reviews exist, the vast majority highlight a truly wonderful and memorable stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by several aspects of Les Tilleuls:

  • Service & Hospitality: The warm, kind, and attentive nature of the owners, Julien Wauthier and Alizée, is a recurring theme in positive reviews, making guests feel genuinely at home.
  • Location: The hotel boasts an ideal central location, just a minute's walk to downtown and a mere 5 minutes to Étretat Beach and the famous cliffs. It offers proximity to attractions while maintaining a peaceful ambiance.
  • Design & Atmosphere: The 18th-century mansion is admired for its beautiful and authentic character, featuring eclectic interiors with antique furniture, original oil paintings, parquet floors, and leafy gardens. The atmosphere is often described as calm, pleasant, elegant, and soothing, encouraging guests to unwind.
  • Amenities: Highlights include free Wi-Fi, a charming garden and terrace, a library, and even a small home cinema. The property also offers wellness retreats, including yoga and pilates sessions.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Les Tilleuls are consistently described as spotless, cozy, and incredibly comfortable. They are individually furnished, exuding an old-world elegance with floral tapestries and vintage pieces. Some bathrooms are noted for being exceptionally spacious, and amenities like bathrobes and free bottled water are provided. Certain rooms offer direct access to sunny terraces or balconies. However, some guests have noted the absence of modern conveniences such as refrigerators, kettles, and televisions in the rooms, and a lack of air-conditioning.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience, particularly breakfast, receives high praise. It's consistently described as delicious, featuring fresh, high-quality local products, and beautifully presented. Breakfast is often served at a communal table. Dinner is an intimate affair, prepared by the Belgian Michelin-starred chef and co-owner, Julien Wauthier, and requires advance booking due to the use of fresh, daily ingredients. Many guests who experienced the dinner service expressed regret that they had not booked it earlier.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Les Tilleuls is a standout feature. Guests frequently commend the owners, Julien and Alizée, for their exceptional kindness, warmth, and genuine hospitality. They are described as attentive and charming, fostering an environment where guests feel truly welcome and at home.

6. Location & Accessibility

Les Tilleuls boasts an enviable location in the heart of Étretat, a mere 300 meters from the famous cliffs and a 5-minute walk to Étretat Beach. It's also conveniently close to other attractions like the Étretat Golf Course and Le Clos Arsène Lupin Museum. Private, secure parking is available on-site for a fee, and public transport options are also accessible.

7. Value & Pricing

While some guests consider Les Tilleuls to be on the more expensive side (with reported prices around €360 per night for some bookings, plus an additional €10 for parking), many feel the unique experience and high quality justify the cost. Booking.com rates the "Value for money" at 8.6. Average weeknight prices are around $326, with May often being the cheapest month and September the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by some guests:

  • Room Amenities: The absence of a refrigerator, kettle, TV, and air-conditioning in rooms has been mentioned by some guests.
  • Sound Insulation: Poor sound insulation was cited as an issue in one review.
  • Breakfast: While generally praised, some found the breakfast options limited and portions small, leading to feeling hungry quickly. The communal dining table, particularly with dogs present, was also a point of discomfort for one guest.
  • Cleaning Service: One guest reported that their room was only cleaned twice during a week-long stay.
  • Family Environment: In rare instances, some guests felt uncomfortable with what they perceived as a "family atmosphere" where the owners' children were noisy or occupied common areas.
  • Isolated Incidents: Very few, but impactful, negative reviews cited issues such as ants in the room, unkempt gardens with dog faeces, and misleading photos on booking sites. These appear to be highly isolated incidents contrasting with the majority of experiences.
  • Parking Information: Some guests received parking instructions late on the day of arrival.

What a wonderful visit. We stayed at Les Tilleuls for a week in early April and it was magnificent. Juilien, Alizée and Milo made us feel like it was our home. The house and gardens are gorgeous and situated a short walk away from the touristy waterfront area such that it is serene. The amenities are excellent as is the attention given by Juilien and Alizée to the guests and the property. But ...

Les Tilleuls Etretat is a private mansion almost 300 years old, very carefully and beautifully restored. We had a very comfortable stay, only regret is that we only stayed for 1 night. We did not get the time to enjoy the private cinema, wine cellar and the beautiful garden of the house. Hopefully next time we will stay for a few days. A la carte breakfast was very good, with fresh local products....
