Expert Review: L'Eautel
L'Eautel in Toulon, France, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently garners positive reviews for its unique design, prime location, and exceptional service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
L'Eautel receives high praise from guests, with strong ratings across major booking platforms. It holds an 8.4/10 on Booking.com, 4.2/5 on Google, 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor, and 9.0/10 on Hotels.com. The general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently highlighting the hotel's charm and excellent offerings.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love L'Eautel for several standout features:
- Outstanding Location: Situated in the historic center of Toulon, directly facing the port and the bay, it offers easy access to tourist sites and the city.
- Unique Design: The hotel is a charming blend of three seventeenth-century buildings, with interiors uniquely decorated around a water theme that pays homage to Toulon's maritime history.
- Rooftop Pool & Relaxation Area: A major draw is the rooftop swimming pool and solarium, providing panoramic views of the harbor and Mont Faron.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: The hospitality of the staff is frequently commended as excellent, friendly, and attentive.
3. Room Quality
The 62 rooms at L'Eautel are described as comfortable, sober, and neat, with a tasteful nautical design featuring soft tones of blue, white, and woody shades. Rooms are equipped with quality bedding, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars with purified water, and sound-proofed windows. Many rooms offer pleasant views of the harbor, adding to the charm. While generally well-regarded, some guests have noted that certain rooms can be quite small, and the "platform beds" in some accommodations may not appeal to everyone. Bathrooms are functional and well-maintained, often featuring a walk-in shower and separate toilet, along with bathrobes and toiletries.
4. Dining Experience
L'Eautel houses L'Équerre, a bistronomic restaurant and bar. The restaurant is celebrated for its elegant setting under a beautifully restored 19th-century glass ceiling, attributed to the Eiffel workshops. The menu focuses on local and Mediterranean cuisine, utilizing fresh products.
Breakfast receives particular praise for its fantastic selection, including homemade salmon, organic juices, fruits, yogurts, cereals, and a variety of sweet and savory options. While dinner is generally well-received for its delicious food and outstanding service, some guests have found the portions to be small, especially considering the price. The bar also offers an inviting atmosphere with a good wine selection and signature cocktails.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at L'Eautel consistently receive high marks from guests. They are frequently described as very friendly, helpful, exceptional, and going out of their way to assist visitors. Guests appreciate their professionalism and attentiveness, which significantly contributes to a memorable stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an outstanding location in the heart of Toulon's historic center, directly opposite the port and the National Navy Museum. This central position provides direct access to the city, its tourist sites, and the revamped Rue des Arts district with its galleries, boutiques, and cafes. Public transport, including bus stops, is conveniently close, and the port allows for sea excursions to nearby islands.
However, guests have noted that accessing the hotel by car and finding parking can be challenging due to the city center's pedestrian zones. The hotel offers private parking for EUR 17 per day, but it has height restrictions (max 1.90 meters) and is subject to availability, with advance booking highly recommended.
7. Value & Pricing
L'Eautel is generally considered to offer good value for money, with an 8.0 rating for value on Booking.com. While specific room prices vary, the continental breakfast is priced at approximately EUR 24 per person, and private parking is EUR 17 per night. A city tax of EUR 2.83 per person per night is also applicable. The hotel offers a blend of upscale comforts and eco-friendly charm, justifying its four-star status and pricing.
8. Common Complaints
While highly rated, L'Eautel has a few recurring criticisms:
- Room Size: Some guests found certain rooms, particularly those with "platform beds," to be smaller than expected.
- Noise: Noise from nearby bars or outdoor live music on both sides of the hotel has been reported, especially on Saturday nights, leading some guests to request room changes.
- Minor Maintenance Issues: Isolated comments mention dirty walls in corridors and a lack of extra towels for the pool.
- Dining Portions: A few guests found the dinner portions at the restaurant to be small, especially given the price.
- Parking Difficulty: The challenges of car access and the limited, height-restricted private parking are a point of concern for some.

We stayed one night and the room was OK although the WC light was faulty and could not be switched off, which was annoying. Breakfast was probably the worst I have ever had in a French hotel. Se...

Breakfast was fantastic a great selection for a continental! We used the pool once and was a little disappointed that it was unavailable for the rest of our stay due to maintenance.
