Expert Review: Le Pavillon
Le Pavillon, a Michelin Key Selected property in Charbonnières-les-Bains, France, offers a luxurious escape just minutes from Lyon, renowned for its serene setting and upscale amenities.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Le Pavillon is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as an "amazing find," "stylish and classy," and offering an "exceptional stay". Review scores are consistently high, indicating a very good to fantastic experience for most visitors. The hotel is praised for its tranquil atmosphere and high-end services.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Le Pavillon:
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel is celebrated for its very stylish and classy aesthetic, with an elegant and understated design mixing Art Deco details with dark wood furnishings and botanical wallpaper.
- Service & Staff: The staff are frequently highlighted for being friendly, helpful, professional, and extremely attentive, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.
- Location & Scenery: Its location within a magnificent landscaped park, offering lush greenery and park views, is a major draw. The proximity to Lyon while maintaining a peaceful environment is also a key highlight.
- Amenities: The spa facilities, including a large indoor pool, Jacuzzi, hammam, and fitness room, are highly appreciated for their quality and intimate character, with many rooms offering views of the park. The convenience of free private parking is also a plus.
3. Room Quality
Rooms and suites at Le Pavillon are consistently described as spacious, clean, and very comfortable, often exceeding guest expectations in terms of size and design. They are decorated in sophisticated shades of ivory and slate gray, accented with pops of turquoise and scarlet red. Key features include excellent bedding, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and tea/coffee makers. A significant advantage is that all rooms boast private balconies or terraces, many offering picturesque views of the surrounding park and even a charming waterfall. Bathrooms are well-appointed, featuring both tubs and separate rainfall showers, along with designer toiletries. Electric blinds contribute to a good night's sleep.
4. Dining Experience
The breakfast experience receives mixed but generally positive feedback. While some guests found the breakfast amazing and appreciated the spacious dining room with panoramic park views, at least one recent review mentioned it as being below the expected standard for a 5-star hotel, lacking show cooking. The hotel's main restaurant, Le Grandioz, is located across the street inside the impressive Pasino Grand casino, considered one of France's most beautiful casinos. Another option for French cuisine is La Rotonde for lunch or dinner.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Le Pavillon is a consistent strong point. Guests frequently commend the staff for their friendliness, helpfulness, and professionalism. They are described as extremely attentive and charming, ensuring a pleasant stay for visitors.
6. Location & Accessibility
Le Pavillon is ideally situated in Charbonnières-les-Bains, a historic spa town known for its lush landscapes and peaceful environment to the west of Lyon. It's set on a wooded estate adjacent to the Domaine de Lacroix-Laval, featuring a 16th-century château and English-style gardens, perfect for tranquil strolls. Despite its serene setting, the hotel is highly accessible; a short train journey (via tram-train line 22) connects Charbonnières-les-Bains to Lyon's city center in just over 15 minutes, making it an ideal destination for both relaxation and exploring the city. The direct access to the adjacent Casino Le Lyon Vert also offers entertainment options.
7. Value & Pricing
While specific price ranges vary depending on the room type and booking platform, Le Pavillon is generally considered a luxury offering. Deluxe Double Rooms are around 592 sq ft, and Junior Suites are larger at about 807 sq ft. Prices for a Deluxe Double Room with breakfast and spa access can be around €275 for one night, with Junior Suites being higher. Some guests consider it a worthwhile expenditure for the quality of the facilities and service, especially when considering secret offers or package deals. The inclusion of spa access and sometimes a welcome gift or champagne coupe can enhance the perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, a few recurring issues have been noted:
- Spa Facilities: Some guests have mentioned the Jacuzzi being a little small and the steam room potentially needing maintenance.
- Breakfast Consistency: As noted earlier, while generally well-regarded, some recent feedback indicates that the breakfast quality might not always meet the expectations for a 5-star establishment, particularly regarding the variety or "show cooking" elements.
- Payment Options: One review indicated that the hotel does not accept American Express.

Great location. Reception a little small and hectic, rooms only ready by 4pm but very spacious. Beautiful scenery. You can charge your car at a reasonable rate. Voiturier professional. Nice spa but book treatments long in advance. Breakfast too expensive for what it is. For 30€pp I expected more choice.

There was only one person at the front desk handling all guest check-ins and helping them to their rooms. The hotel was sold out for the day and having one person at the front desk and assisting guests is an issue that the manager should've foreseen. The front desk lady was helpful and showed us to the room as soon as she could. The room is well laid out with a nice balcony. The bathroom was clean...

Great potential by no service. Really disappointed that the hotel : - does not offer a vallet service and that you have to park your car outside of the hotel - American Express was not accepted - there is no laundry service who can support ad hoc request (they suggest you do it yourself) - the gym is open after 10am and close at 8pm… really limited timing to do your daily sport. - nail spa was not...

Hello, I just had a short weekend at the Hotel Le Pavillon. The rooms were fine. However, don't leave your bag in your room while having breakfast or going for a half-hour walk. Just enough time for a large sum of money to be stolen. I went to the casino and when I arrived to play, my wallet was empty. I went back to the hotel, but they couldn't access the security cameras. The manager was on va...
