Expert Review: La Posta Vecchia
La Posta Vecchia, a Michelin Key Selected property in Ladispoli, Italy, offers a unique and luxurious escape steeped in history and set against the picturesque Tyrrhenian Sea. Once a private villa of J. Paul Getty, this grand estate blends aristocratic charm with impeccable service, making it a distinctive destination for discerning travelers.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for La Posta Vecchia is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as "superb" or "exceptional." Review scores frequently range from 9.0 to 10 on various platforms. Guests often refer to their stay as "Magical," a "dream," or "home away from home with highest standard". It is celebrated for its unique character, historical significance, and elegant ambiance. While predominantly praised, a few isolated reviews mention aspects that were "underwhelming" or "disappointing," primarily concerning dining value and some room features.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud La Posta Vecchia for several outstanding features:
- Service & Staff: The hospitality is frequently described as "over the top," "excellent," "impeccable," and "attentive". The staff are noted for their enthusiastic and well-trained approach, often providing a personalized, "family-style" service, even addressing guests by their last name upon arrival.
- Location & Setting: Situated directly on the sea, the hotel boasts beautiful grounds and a serene, remote atmosphere, ideal for relaxation. It offers breathtaking sea views and private beach access. Its proximity to Rome Fiumicino Airport (approximately 40-45 minutes away) also makes it a convenient luxury option for layovers or as a peaceful retreat near Rome.
- Design & History: The property is a "Renaissance masterpiece," a "beautiful boutique property" adorned with 17th-century antiques, priceless artworks, and Roman artifacts discovered on-site, which are now housed in a private museum within the hotel. The ambiance evokes the feeling of staying in a private castle or a luxurious museum.
- Amenities: Highlights include a fine indoor pool, a full-service spa offering massages and treatments, an outdoor tennis court, and complimentary bicycle rentals. Free WiFi and private parking are also available.
3. Room Quality
The rooms and suites at La Posta Vecchia are generally described as "very large" and "spacious," often featuring incredible seaside views. Each is "individually decorated with Renaissance furnishings, paintings, and antique tapestries". Guests appreciate the comfort and luxurious touches, including "premium bedding, high-end coffee makers, plush toiletries," bathrobes, minibars, flat-screen televisions, and free WiFi. Some reviews, however, note that rooms can feel "outdated," "dark," or "small," and there have been comments about the air conditioning being questionable or lacking control.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant, The Cesar, holds a Michelin star and is celebrated for its "Mediterranean cuisine" and the opportunity for alfresco dining with ocean views. The food is often lauded as "over the top," "first class," and "delicious". Breakfast, which is complimentary, is generally rated as "amazing" or "fine". Despite the high praise, some guests have expressed disappointment, finding the food "underwhelming and extremely overpriced," with limited variety and a wine selection that was deemed "mediocre" and "exorbitant". There were also mentions of wasps during breakfast.
5. Service & Staff
The service at La Posta Vecchia is a consistent point of praise, frequently described as "excellent," "impeccable," and "attentive". Staff members are often highlighted for their professionalism, warmth, and personalized approach, making guests feel like "house guests of modern aristocracy". Specific individuals have been commended for going "above and beyond" to enhance guest stays. While the vast majority of feedback is positive, a couple of reviews suggested the service could be "spotty" or "lacking" in certain instances.
6. Location & Accessibility
La Posta Vecchia is located in Ladispoli, a coastal town just under an hour from Rome. Its beachfront position with a private beach offers a secluded and tranquil environment. The hotel is approximately a 40-45 minute drive from Rome Fiumicino Airport, making it a convenient choice for those flying in or out of the capital. While ideal for relaxation, its "remote" location means it's not within walking distance of many other restaurants or shops, which some guests preferred for quietude, while others wished for more nearby options. Rome is easily accessible by car or train, with hourly train departures. It's important to note that the property has "a lot of stone steps," and upper floors are accessible by stairs only, though some wheelchair accessibility is available for parking, lounges, and restaurants.
7. Value & Pricing
La Posta Vecchia is positioned as a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates can start around $500 per night. While many guests feel the unique experience, luxury, and serenity justify the cost, some find the overall value, particularly regarding dining, to be expensive, with specific mentions of a glass of wine costing €23. On Booking.com, the "Value for money" scores an 8.4 out of 10, indicating a generally good perceived value despite the high price point.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms, though not widespread, include:
- Dining Value: The cost of food and wine at the restaurant is frequently cited as "extremely overpriced," with some guests feeling the quality did not always match the price. Lack of variety and authenticity in local cuisine was also mentioned.
- Accessibility: The presence of numerous stone steps and the lack of an elevator to upper floors were noted as potential issues for guests with mobility concerns.
- Room Ambience: A few reviews described rooms as "outdated," "dark," or "small," and there were isolated comments about questionable air conditioning and rough towels.
- Insect Annoyance: Wasps at breakfast were a minor but recurrent complaint.
- Remote Location: While a highlight for some, others viewed the hotel's secluded nature as a drawback, wishing for more attractions or dining options within walking distance.

We only booked a beach day and had lunch at the restaurant. Everyone was SO friendly. The food was actually so good. The private beach was a big plus. Everything nearby is so crowded. Water is included which I love. Thank you for the amazing birthday beach day. It’s 50 mins from Rome.

We had the most incredible stay with La Posta Vecchia! The location, attention to detail, service at a venue that’s impeccably designed and decorated. It was our first stay after landing in Rome, and every hotel thereafter does not measure up. Cannot wait to be back!

Unbelievably beautiful hotel in a magnificent setting. Even better than the photographs. Service in the hotel and restaurant were great. We were looking forward to enjoying spectacular dinners in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the pasta was mushy and tasteless both nights...in Italy.!... The rest of the food was good, but not great. Portions very small. Service in the bar...not so mu...

If I could give them 10 stars, I totally would. We stayed here for the last night of our family vacation. Prior to this we stayed all throughout Rome as well as did a cruise around the Mediterranean. No, we didn't see everything Italy had to offer but at this point, I don't need to. The location, staff, food, etc...everything was brilliant. I really don't know how anyone could have anything disap...
