Expert Review: La Pérouse
Hôtel La Pérouse, a Michelin Key Selected property in Nice, France, consistently garners high praise for its exceptional location, stunning views, and charming atmosphere, offering a luxurious and tranquil escape on the Côte d'Azur.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
La Pérouse generally receives an exceptional to very good rating, with guests frequently describing it as an oasis of tranquility and luxury. Hotels.com users have given it an "Exceptional" 10/10 rating, while Agoda shows an impressive 8.6 overall. Time Out rated it 4 out of 5 stars, highlighting its blend of modern French Riviera charm with historical character. The overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many guests eager to return.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about the hotel's breathtaking sea views, particularly of the Bay of Angels, which can be enjoyed from most rooms, the pool area, and the rooftop terrace. Its "outstanding location" carved into a cliffside, offers a quiet retreat while being just minutes from Nice's Old Town and the Promenade des Anglais. The charming sunken patio and garden, adorned with fragrant lemon trees and featuring an outdoor pool, are also frequently cited as major attractions. The hotel is recognized as a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
3. Room Quality
The 56 to 63 rooms and suites at La Pérouse are individually furnished and decorated, offering a contemporary Mediterranean feel. They feature high-quality furnishings, plush beds with premium bedding, and bathrooms often clad in Botticino marble. Many rooms boast balconies or terraces that provide magnificent sea views. Standard amenities include air conditioning, blackout drapes, soundproofed rooms, in-room safes, minibars, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries. However, some guests note that smaller rooms (under 200 sq ft) can feel snug, and some "double beds" may consist of two single beds pushed together. The hotel's unique cliffside architecture can result in a "maze-like" layout with multiple elevators.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant, Le Patio, overlooks a garden and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It offers Mediterranean cuisine with French and Italian influences, focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Dining on the outdoor terrace, shaded by lemon trees, provides a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Breakfast options typically include a buffet with fresh fruits, pastries, cereals, cold cuts, and hot choices like scrambled eggs and bacon, along with fresh orange juice. While the cuisine is generally considered excellent, some reviews suggest it may not reach the "Michelin quality" of some other Nice establishments. Guests enjoying breakfast on the terrace should be wary of seagulls.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at La Pérouse are frequently highlighted as "exceptional," "helpful," and "incredibly friendly and accommodating." Guests have praised the team for going "above and beyond" to ensure a special stay. The hotel offers 24-hour front desk service, multilingual staff, concierge services, and punctual maid service.
6. Location & Accessibility
La Pérouse boasts an "outstanding location" at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais, nestled in the rock face of Castle Hill, overlooking the Baie des Anges and the Port of Nice. This position provides a quieter, more secluded ambiance while still offering immediate access to the beach (just 20 meters away) and a short walk to Nice's vibrant Old Town. Public transportation, including tram stations, is within an 8 to 11-minute walk. The hotel is also conveniently located next to the Castle Hill Elevator.
7. Value & Pricing
As a luxury property, La Pérouse commands a higher price point, with an average room cost of around $515, significantly above Nice's average. While some reviews indicate it offers "incredible value for money" for the luxury experience, guests should be aware of additional charges for certain services such as breakfast, parking, and high-speed Wi-Fi.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms include that some aspects of the decor can appear "tired". Some rooms, particularly the smaller ones, might feel cramped for American travelers, and some double beds are formed by pushing two single beds together. The complimentary Wi-Fi is noted as being slow, with a fee for faster access. The absence of in-room coffee and tea facilities has also been mentioned. While the gym is available and offers views, it is described as "a little small and limited" for a hotel of its caliber. The initial impression of the lobby can be "uninspiring" compared to the charm found within the rest of the property.

I cannot tell you how much my wife and I enjoyed this incredible hotel. From the friendly accommodating staff to the view of the sunset from our balcony to the amenities to the breakfast to the perfect location. Thank you for helping us to make such wonderful memories. We will be back and we will make La Perouse our home away from home from now on.

Wonderful location and very nice service. My housband and I enjoyed every minute in that wonderful location. Our room was spacious and comfortable with the most beautiful balcony with view of the bay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, right in the heart of old town and on the sea. Loved this place, the staff was the most welcoming and helpful. The location is great, walk to so much in the old city. The rooms are nice too, big enough and comfortable. The hotel is a chopped up maze, loved it.

Just got to this hotel and unfortunately the way they portray the hotel online has nothing to do with what it actually looks like. After paying upwards of $2000 for two nights here we were put in a room with no views at all looking at a wall with a balcony looking down at the staff break area. It is supposed to be newly renovated, but it does not seem like it is at all. When we complained at the f...
