La Maison d'Uzès: A Michelin One-Key Gem in the Heart of Provence
La Maison d'Uzès, a Relais & Châteaux property nestled in a 17th-century historic monument in Uzès, France, stands out as a luxurious boutique hotel recognized with a Michelin One Key distinction for a "very special stay." Guests consistently praise its unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort, making it a highly-rated destination.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for La Maison d'Uzès is overwhelmingly positive, with an average rating of 8.8 out of 10 for "superb" experiences. Many guests describe their stay as exceptional, pleasant, and beyond expectations, highlighting the hotel's magical atmosphere and remarkable aesthetics. While some minor issues regarding value and room amenities were noted, the prevailing sentiment is one of high satisfaction with the luxury and service provided.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love several aspects of La Maison d'Uzès:
- Service & Staff: The staff receives frequent commendation for being incredibly helpful, professional, attentive, and welcoming. Their ability to learn guests' preferences due to the hotel's smaller size is particularly appreciated.
- Location: The hotel boasts an excellent, central location in Uzès, placing guests within easy walking distance of the city's main attractions, restaurants, shops, and the vibrant Place aux Herbes.
- Design & Architecture: The historic 17th-century building, a listed historic monument, is admired for its incredible architecture, elegant facade, and majestic central staircase, seamlessly blending historical ambiance with contemporary interior design.
- Amenities: The Clarins Spa, nestled under Romanesque vaults with a Turkish bath and Roman bath, is a significant draw, offering a range of luxurious treatments. The Michelin-starred restaurant, La Table d'Uzès, is also a major highlight.
3. Room Quality
La Maison d'Uzès offers 9 to 13 elegantly designed rooms and suites, each unique and combining modern comforts with traditional charm. Guests often describe the rooms as spacious, comfortable, quiet, and beautifully appointed, featuring high ceilings and a blend of modern and ancient aesthetics. Amenities typically include air conditioning, minibars, safes, LCD televisions with satellite channels, complimentary WiFi, hairdryers, bathrobes, slippers, makeup mirrors, and Clarins toiletries. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms might lack a shower, offering only a bathtub, and a few have mentioned issues with mattress quality or limited counter space in smaller bathrooms. Acoustic isolation has also been a minor concern for some light sleepers.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant, La Table d'Uzès, holds a prestigious Michelin star and is a significant part of the guest experience. Chef Christophe Ducros focuses on authentic French cuisine with flavors from the South of France, emphasizing seasonal and local produce from the nearby valley and markets. Guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace, offering picturesque views of the cathedral. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a children's menu available. Breakfast is often praised for its quality, offering a good variety, including cooked options and homemade pastries with local products. Reservations for the restaurant are required.
5. Service & Staff
The service at La Maison d'Uzès is consistently highlighted as exceptional. Guests report a warm welcome and attentive, professional, and extremely helpful staff who go above and beyond to make stays enjoyable. The personalized service, where staff remember guests without needing room numbers, is a recurring positive comment. Valet parking services are also available and appreciated.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel is centrally located in the historic district of Uzès, making it an ideal base for exploring the charming town with its narrow, honey-colored streets. It's just a short walk from major attractions like Uzès Cathedral and Château Ducal. The hotel is accessible by car, with clear directions provided, and offers both self-parking and valet parking. High-speed train stations in Nîmes (30 minutes) and Avignon (40 minutes) offer convenient access, with private transfers available. Marseille-Marignane airport is about a 1 hour 45 minute drive away. The property is multi-storey with an elevator, and at least one room and common areas are accessible for guests with reduced mobility.
7. Value & Pricing
La Maison d'Uzès is considered a luxury boutique hotel, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates can start from approximately $234-$268 USD per night, with an average price around $370 per room, which is higher than the average hotel room in Uzès. While some guests find the value for money to be good for a luxury experience, particularly given the Michelin Key recognition, others have raised concerns about the cost, especially regarding basic room amenities and the extra charge for breakfast (around EUR 26-30 per person). Optional extras like pet stays (EUR 15 per night) and rollaway beds (EUR 40 per night) also add to the cost.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are generally very positive, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:
- Room Amenities & Size: Some guests have reported issues with room cleanliness, and in certain instances, rooms were described as dark, small, or lacking basic amenities like a desk or tea-making facilities. The absence of a shower in some rooms, offering only a bathtub, has also been mentioned.
- Spa Access: Although the spa is a highlight, some guests were disappointed to find that access required pre-booking specific half-hour slots and incurred an additional charge (e.g., EUR 25 per person), which they felt was not clearly communicated.
- Noise: For light sleepers, the acoustic isolation between rooms and from the corridor has been a minor issue.
- Pool Size: One review mentioned the outdoor pool appearing smaller in reality than it did on the website.

This Relais & Chateaux hotel is among the most wonderful places we have stayed in the south of France. The rooms are spacious, clean, and feel cozy and historic and the staff - each and every one - are amazing beyond compare. They make your every need feel like the most important thing they do. Dating back to 1699, every nook and cranny is something to discover from the old part of the hotel only ...

Beautiful hotel in Uzes, our rooms were large and spacious, very comfy linens/bed. We enjoyed a very nice dinner. There is parking just down the street in a public parking lot. Road is closed to access hotel, but if you inform hotel, they will lower the blocks so you can bring luggage directly to the entrance. Would stay again if in the area-travelled in july 2017

I dont know how this hotel get 5* rating. No pool, no restaurant, no gym, nothing to do here. You have to go into the town. Our upgraded(?) Room is 50 steps up and as bland as can be. Service excellent but very poor hotel.

I have eaten there today and I must say it is one of the best restaurants in the whole area and it was an extraordinary experience to have dinner there. The building is from the 17th century and it is beautifully renovated. The personal working there does a great job and you really do feel at home. The menu is reasonably priced for what you do get and the taste and quality is outrageous. We will d...
