Expert Review: Kameha Grand
The Kameha Grand Bonn, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive and luxurious experience with its striking design, riverside location, and comprehensive amenities. It generally garners positive feedback, particularly for its unique aesthetics and attentive service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The Kameha Grand Bonn holds a strong "Very good" sentiment among guests, with an average rating of 8.7 out of 10 based on 145 reviews on HRS, and an 8.0 out of 10 based on over 4,900 reviews on Booking.com. A significant 84.5% of guests recommend the hotel for a future stay. The general consensus highlights it as a "designer hotel" that stands out.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise the hotel's "incredible architecture" and unique design, often described as "modern," "stylish," "neo-Baroque," and even "a living Dalí painting" by designer Marcel Wanders. Its prime location directly on the Rhine River, offering picturesque views, is another major draw. The hotel's comprehensive spa area, featuring a heated outdoor infinity pool with panoramic views of the Rhine and Siebengebirge hills, and saunas, is a significant highlight. The helpful and friendly staff also receive frequent commendation.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Kameha Grand Bonn are noted for their modern, spacious, and uniquely stylish design. Each of the 218 guestrooms and 36 suites, some designed by Marcel Wanders, features its own character and individual artwork. Standard amenities include cable and satellite TV (including Sky Sport), full-length windows, hot drinks facilities, a minibar, and a refrigerator. Many rooms also include a bathtub. The themed suites, such as "game suites," "workaholic rooms," and "ladies suites," are particularly lauded for their exaggerated yet functional designs, with some featuring grand pianos or whirlpool tubs. However, some guests have reported issues such as a lack of air conditioning (the hotel uses a geothermal system), difficulty with light controls, and occasional mentions of rooms feeling "worn out" or having an unpleasant smell upon entry.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel boasts an exquisite selection of dining options, including Ludwig's restaurant, RheinAlm (a Bavarian beer garden on the Rhine banks), and the acclaimed YUNICO, a French-Japanese Michelin-starred restaurant with 17 Gault & Millau points, located on the top floor with Rhine views. The breakfast experience is highly rated, often described as "out of this world" and "amazing," offering a wide variety including freshly baked pastries, Mediterranean sausages, a selection of cheeses, homemade salmon, numerous jams, and Vipiteno creamy yoghurt. There's also a live cooking station for eggs, a hot station with accompaniments like mushrooms and bacon, an orange juice station, and a waffle station. Vegan options are also available. While breakfast generally receives rave reviews, some guests have expressed disappointment with the quality and presentation of certain brunch items, suggesting they may be pre-made or not up to a 5-star standard.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Kameha Grand Bonn are frequently highlighted as "very friendly and competent," "helpful and nice," and "super sweet." Guests appreciate the staff's readiness to assist at all times, contributing to an overall pleasant stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Kameha Grand Bonn enjoys a strategic and scenic location directly on the banks of the Rhine River, offering unique views of the river, Rheinaue park, and Siebengebirge National Park. While it's approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) from Bonn city center, it is well-connected. The Bonn-Oberkassel S-Bahn Station and Ramersdorf Underground Station are within a 10-minute walk, and the Konrad-Zuse-Platz bus stop is just 0.2 miles away. Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is about 24 km (15 miles) away, a 15-22 minute drive. The hotel is also conveniently located just 3 minutes from the A59 motorway.
7. Value & Pricing
The hotel generally receives good ratings for "value for money" at 9.5 out of 10 on HRS. While it is a luxury property, some guests have found good deals, making the price very reasonable. Typical prices for a deluxe room can start from around $162 per night, with winter offers potentially available from €139 per night including breakfast and spa access. Average weeknight prices are around $178 and weekend nights around $156.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overall positive feedback, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:
- No Air Conditioning: Rooms unfortunately do not have traditional air conditioning, relying instead on a geothermal system, which some guests found insufficient for cooling.
- Minibar Functionality: There have been reports of minibar refrigerators not cooling properly, sometimes being used merely as decorative elements.
- Room Maintenance & Controls: Some guests have described rooms as needing renovation, appearing "worn out" or "shabby," and experiencing issues like unpleasant smells from sinks. The lighting controls in rooms have also been cited as confusing or difficult to operate.
- Crowded Pool: The infinity pool, while a major highlight, can become "quite small and got very crowded on the weekend."
- Sauna Condition: One review mentioned that the sauna facilities are "slowly getting old" and "needs some maintenance."
- Brunch Quality: While breakfast is praised, the quality and presentation of some brunch items have been criticized for appearing pre-made or lacking the expected standard for a five-star hotel.

Stayed a week in a Superior Deluxe Room. The Grand Hotel at the Bonner Bogen a newly developed area at the banks of the Rhine opened in 2009. It has a thrilling modern appearance. Also the interior has a touch of design and arts. However, upon entering the lobby, everything is very dark and not really inviting. There is no counter, the receptionists using small tables and notebooks. They are easi...

Last night my husband, daughter and I spent a delightful few hours in the Stage Bar at the Kamea Grand Hotel in Bonn. The Stage Bar is spacious, open and decorated in an exaggerated Hawaiian motif using black, white and red. We encountered two wonderful employees: Jean-Baptiste the bartender and Botan the manager. Both were exceptional! Jean-Baptiste greeted us immediately, provided menus and prom...

Wonderful place to stay in front of the Rhein. Rooms are hyper clean. You can enjoy the swimming pool and the sauna / hamman. And then go to the cigar lounge if you are an « amateur » (big up to Jean Baptiste helping find a good puro). The hotel personnel is anyway making everything to make you experience a great stay.

Terrible experience. Invoice said breakfast was included. Staff confirmed it was at check in, and at check out it was charged additionally. If clear information was provided at check in, this very unconfortable moment would have been avoided. Rooms are old. Bathrooms need renovation. Furniture is stained in the Suite. Avoid at all costs!

The worse experience I had so far in a hotel. My room is looking towards inner space which is a discotheque during the night. They pretend to have sound isolation which is actually missing. The light effects can also be seen inside the room as the curtains do not stop them. So if you want to sleep during the night - please avoid this hotel- it is not possible to sleep in the room during the night....
