Expert Review: Hotel Sevilla
Hotel Sevilla, Mérida, Mexico: A Michelin Key Selected Oasis of Design and Serenity
Hotel Sevilla in Mérida, Mexico, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its exceptional design, tranquil atmosphere, and prime location. Guests frequently describe it as a "hidden oasis" within the bustling downtown of Mérida, offering a serene escape in a beautifully restored 19th-century stately home.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hotel Sevilla is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests rating their experience as "Excellent" or "Exceptional". Reviewers laud the hotel for its unique blend of historical charm and contemporary design, creating a "dreamlike" and "cinematic" ambiance. While the majority of feedback is glowing, a few minor points of criticism occasionally surface.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's design, which seamlessly integrates the original 19th-century architecture with modern, brutalist interventions. The property centers around a stunning pool, reminiscent of old hacienda water cisterns, with rooms wrapped around it. The cenote-inspired spa, built of natural stone, is another major draw, offering a hammam, a Tuj sauna, a cold plunge, and various treatments including massages, facial mud, and herbal teas. The hotel's commitment to regional cuisine and its intimate, thoughtful spaces also contribute to its allure.
3. Room Quality
Hotel Sevilla offers 21 rooms, ranging from 21 to 70 square meters, with many providing views of the interior courtyard and pool area. The rooms are characterized by a serene, minimalist design, featuring warm tones, concrete elements, and clever backboard partitions. Modern amenities include air conditioning, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, work desks, and free WiFi with speeds of 50+ Mbps. The design approach emphasizes a "palimpsest" concept, where present and past architectural layers coexist, preserving the original facade and old walls while incorporating modern elements like enlarged windows and skylights.
4. Dining Experience
The in-house restaurant at Hotel Sevilla provides a stylish and sophisticated dining experience, with menus crafted by French chef Marion Chateau, known for her vibrant cooking. Breakfast is a hearty affair, featuring Mexican specialties such as enchiladas suizas with green sauce, pancakes, and chaya and cheese omelets, alongside a fruit plate with unbeatable Yucatecan produce. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy poolside snacks like guacamole and fresh catch-of-the-day crudo. The hotel also boasts a bar, located above the pool, which becomes a dramatic spot for mezcalitas and nightcaps, described as "where the magic happens."
5. Service & Staff
While specific details on individual staff interactions are limited in the provided reviews, the "effortless" booking experience and "warm welcome" suggest a high standard of hospitality. The hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, full-day security, and room service, indicating a commitment to guest convenience and comfort.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hotel Sevilla boasts an excellent location in Mérida Centro, situated just one block from the city's central Plaza Grande. This puts guests within a 3-minute walk of Plaza Grande and the Merida Cathedral. It's also a short 17-minute walk from Paseo de Montejo. The hotel's central position makes it ideal for exploring Mérida's historic city and its noteworthy attractions on foot. For those traveling by air, Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport is approximately a 15-minute drive (7 km) away. The property has been updated with an elegantly placed elevator to facilitate access to all floors.
7. Value & Pricing
Hotel Sevilla is considered "high end for the neighborhood" but offers a "reasonable rate for international travelers." Prices for a one-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $249.75, excluding taxes and fees. The value is perceived to be in its luxurious accommodations, unique design, comprehensive amenities, and prime location.
8. Common Complaints
While overall reviews are stellar, a few minor issues have been noted by guests. One reviewer mentioned "unclear what was included in the continental breakfast" and a concern about the absence of in-room safes. Another guest vaguely stated "Los servicios :(" suggesting an unspecified issue with services. It's also important to note that while the hotel has an elevator, some surfaces due to the building's age and protected status, may present navigation challenges for guests with mobility issues. Additionally, the hotel has a strict policy of no children under 12 years old. The hotel also does not offer parking on site.

A unique design experience - let yourself drown in beauty and peacefulness just steps away from the bustling market of Merida and its beautiful cathedral square. Clearly, some teething problems remain (reception may be vacant for minutes, new staff may not know where rooms are, service may not be fastest or bring everything at once). Note, historic convent rooms tastefully modernised, but may not ...

Didn’t stay here, but stopped by twice for lunch and cocktails. Geraldo was such an incredible host! He showed us the rooms, gave us a full tour and even showed our friends around when we suggested it to them. A truly stunning hotel and THE NICEST, most welcoming people! Had the Nicoise Salad, twice. Perfect lunch.

It’s a good place, some things may can be improve. In other hotels, they have contacted me in advance to ask about my arrival time and other simple details, which really improves the overall service experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to stay at my usual hotel because it was fully booked. This hotel is okay, but I would probably think twice before booking again.

Worst experience of my life. I was on holiday with my family in Mérida and had booked a New Year’s Eve 2025 dinner at Hotel Sevilla. We were a group of 8, traveling from Dubai, Luxembourg, Syria, and other places to reunite for our annual celebration. Just 15 minutes before our reservation, the hotel sent us a WhatsApp message (not even a phone call) informing us that our booking had been cancelle...

Watch out!! Lousy customer service and a place not to step foot in. They canceled last minute our groups dinner on new years saying the owner decided to prioritize other guests after sharing menu and us confirming dishes and all. He even laughed that its not a big deal as it cant be worse than people dying in palestinian! What a joke of a new place. You have been advised & warned…

For me, Hotel Sevilla is five stars in every way. The location is spectacular: it's right in the heart of Mérida, yet incredibly peaceful, with architecture that makes you feel far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city center. I loved the hotel's design, the spa is amazing, and the pools nestled among the trees exude a beautiful tranquility. The bar and restaurant are super cute and very ...
