Hotel Restaurant Spa Torkel in Nonnenhorn, Germany, stands out as a highly-regarded 4-star superior property, earning a prestigious Michelin Key One-Keys recognition for a "very special stay." Guests consistently praise its blend of modern comforts and traditional charm, highlighting a dedication to hospitality that spans four generations of the Stoppel family.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Restaurant Spa Torkel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their experiences as "excellent," "beautiful," and "close to perfect." It consistently receives high ratings, with a "Wonderful" to "Superb" classification and average scores around 9.1-9.2 out of 10 on various platforms. Many express a strong desire to return, calling it a "familial hotel-jewel."

2. Key Highlights

Guests particularly love the hotel's exceptional service and food, the immaculate and thoughtfully designed rooms, and its prime location near Lake Constance. The attractive spa area, which includes a swimming pool, sauna, and hammam, along with roomy gardens and a heated outdoor pool, are significant drawcards for relaxation. The family-run atmosphere and the dedicated team also stand out as key highlights.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers comfortable, modern, and traditional accommodations, located in both the main and guest houses. Renovated rooms are noted for their reclaimed wood and cozy textiles, with many featuring a private balcony or terrace. Some suites even boast a Jacuzzi on the balcony, adding a touch of luxury. Rooms are consistently described as spotlessly clean and beautiful with attention to detail. However, one guest reported a lack of air conditioning in their room and dim lighting in a "lobby area" of the bedroom. Another mentioned finding the mattress "much too hard," resulting in discomfort.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Hotel Torkel is highly celebrated. The restaurant serves a wide range of tasty dishes, emphasizing local and seasonal produce, with influences from Mediterranean and classic cuisine, as well as regional specialties. Guests praise the "excellent" food, often highlighting the "half pension service" which includes a gourmet menu in the evening. A delicious, complimentary vital breakfast buffet is also a consistent highlight. In pleasant weather, guests can enjoy their meals on the inviting terrace. The menu changes weekly, offering creative dishes. It's worth noting that the hotel's restaurant is not open on Wednesdays, which caught one half-board guest by surprise.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff receive exceptional praise for their friendliness, attentiveness, and welcoming nature. Guests frequently comment on the "personal service" and the dedicated approach of the Stoppel family, who are described as living true hospitality. The team is commended for their "German efficiency and punctuality," contributing to a comfortable and relaxed stay.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Torkel boasts a "great location" in Nonnenhorn, directly on Lake Constance (Bodensee). It's conveniently situated just a short stroll, approximately a five-minute walk, from the northeast shore of the lake and the train station, making it very walkable. The hotel is only 0.1 km from the city center, offering easy access to the village and its attractions. Added conveniences include free private parking and a complimentary train ticket for travel between Nonnenhorn and Lindau during the stay.

7. Value & Pricing

While generally perceived as offering good value, one review noted it as an "expensive stay but in a great location." The price includes various amenities such as the spa and fitness area, swimming pool, vital breakfast buffet, and half-board options. Children's rates for extra beds vary by age, ranging from €55 to €150 per night. Free Wi-Fi and parking are also included, enhancing the overall value.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted. These include the absence of air conditioning in some rooms and a perception of inadequate lighting in certain room areas. One guest found the bed's mattress to be uncomfortably hard. Additionally, the restaurant's closure on Wednesdays came as a surprise to a guest on a half-board plan.

The best hotel service and food I've had in Germany. We stayed over the weekend and the staff were incredible. Our room had comfortable beds, was pet friendly for our dog, and happily fit our family of 5. On site parking made getting our things inside easy. Due to a family emergency we we're delayed in our initial arrival. We had meals included in our stay and since we were updating the staff fr...

Rating is for the restaurant, but since the management is the same, must be awesome! Restaurant has a different menu every week. Super service, friendly and attentive, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, wonderful presentation and delicious food: the kitchen is doing really great, like rarely seen. Have been eating there many times, and it has always been a very special mom...

Well located near train station and port. Family-run, much attention to comfort, lovely bathroom and spa products, nice pool, sauna, whirlpool etc. The dining areas were lovely both indoors and outdoors and the half-board meals we had were nicely executed and of good quality. They have a nice wine list and we drank 5 different bottles just note that the wines we selected were not always available....

The room was spacious, clean and had all the basic amenities I would expect in a 4*. Although we were half board, we only ate one evening meal here as I'm local so preferred to go out with family and friends. The meal we did have was good but at times felt lik...
