Expert Review: Hôtel Reisen, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt

Hôtel Reisen, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, stands as a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property nestled in the historic heart of Stockholm's Gamla Stan. This hotel, with its roots tracing back to a 1617 building that has served as a coffee house, tavern, and literary haunt, beautifully blends historic elegance with modern Scandinavian design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hôtel Reisen is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as an exceptional and fantastic hotel. It often receives high ratings, with a strong emphasis on its prime location and excellent breakfast. However, a recurring point of dissatisfaction, particularly for some during warmer months, is the absence of air conditioning, which has led to uncomfortable stays for a few.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise Hôtel Reisen for several standout features:

  • Location: Its unparalleled location directly on the waterfront in Gamla Stan offers picturesque views of the Baltic Sea and places guests within easy walking distance of major attractions like the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, and Stortorget Square. Convenient access to ferries for exploring the Stockholm Archipelago and a nearby tram station further enhance its appeal.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel beautifully merges its rich history with clean, uncluttered Scandinavian design. The public spaces, including the lobby, bar (Bar Reiss), and a cozy seating area, exude a welcoming and atmospheric feel, with historical touches evident throughout the building.
  • Amenities: A full-service spa, Tjärn, located in the hotel's old vaults, features a Swedish dry sauna, cold plunge pool, and relaxation area, offering a unique Nordic experience. The hotel also boasts a 24-hour gym, though some note the lack of air conditioning in this area as well. Complimentary welcome amenities such as bottled water and chocolates are often appreciated.
  • Breakfast: The gourmet breakfast at Restaurant Reiss is frequently highlighted as a major positive, with its exceptional quality, fresh ingredients (including freshly squeezed orange juice), and a balanced mix of traditional Swedish fare and international options.

3. Room Quality

Hôtel Reisen's rooms are generally well-regarded for their comfortable design and stylish Scandinavian aesthetic. Many rooms, especially sea view options, offer "awesome" views of the waterfront. Specific room features and comfort aspects include:

  • Design: Rooms showcase a minimalist yet cozy Scandinavian design with thoughtful furnishings. Some rooms boast unique historical elements like vaulted ceilings or 17th-century brickwork.
  • Comfort: Beds are typically comfortable, often featuring two mini duvets, a common practice in Northern Europe. However, some guests have found beds to be overly soft.
  • Amenities: Rooms are well-equipped with minibars stocked with local snacks and drinks, Nespresso machines, and binoculars for enjoying the views. Bathrooms are spacious, well-designed, and include quality toiletries with a pleasant citrus scent, bathrobes, and slippers. Heated floors in the bathroom are a luxurious touch.
  • Issues: The most significant drawback is the lack of air conditioning, which can lead to uncomfortably warm rooms, especially during summer. Opening windows might be necessary for cooling, but this can introduce noise from the nearby tram and streetlights. Some guests have also reported issues with non-functioning power outlets near the bed or confusing light switches.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience, particularly breakfast, receives high praise:

  • Breakfast at Restaurant Reiss: Served on the lobby level, the buffet offers an excellent spread of both traditional Swedish options (like herring and egg Skagen, crispbread) and international hot dishes (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages). The quality of ingredients, including freshly squeezed orange juice and various cheeses, is consistently highlighted. The dining area is tastefully decorated with modern chandeliers and elegant arched windows, with the option for al fresco dining in good weather.
  • Dinner: While not always extensively reviewed, dinner at Restaurant Reiss offers classic Swedish cuisine with a modern twist and is described as excellent in quality, despite a less extensive menu.
  • Bar Reiss: Located in the lobby, Bar Reiss is noted as an ideal spot for coffee during the day and is appreciated for its excellent cocktails.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service and staff is generally positive, with many describing staff as friendly, helpful, and attentive. Specific observations include:

  • Hospitality: The reception staff are noted for being very friendly. The restaurant and bar teams are particularly commended for their promptness, attentiveness, and helpfulness, even offering local recommendations.
  • Potential for Understaffing: Some guests have noted instances where the hotel appeared understaffed, leading to minor delays such as long lines at the reception desk for key issues.
  • Housekeeping: While daily housekeeping is provided, one guest reported it to be less thorough, with a lack of replenishment of water and trash removal.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hôtel Reisen's location is a significant asset:

  • Neighborhood: Situated in Gamla Stan (Old Town), it offers a picturesque waterfront setting along the Baltic Sea. The area is characterized by charming cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and cozy cafes, perfect for exploring Stockholm's rich history.
  • Attractions: Guests are within walking distance of iconic landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, Stortorget Square, and the Nobel Prize Museum. Modern attractions like the Fotografiska Museum and the lively Södermalm district are also easily accessible.
  • Transport: The hotel offers convenient access to public transportation. A tram station is right outside, and ferry piers are less than 100 meters away, providing easy routes to various museums and islands. The Gamla Stan Metro Station is about a 10-minute walk. While convenient for public transport, it might not be within "pulling your suitcase" distance from the main train or metro stations for all.

7. Value & Pricing

Hôtel Reisen is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. Standard rooms can start from around £200-£275 per night, or 12,000 to 18,000 World of Hyatt points, depending on the season. Suite upgrades using points (e.g., 6,000 or 9,000 points per night) are often highlighted as excellent value. For a five-star hotel in a prime Stockholm location, many guests find the overall experience, especially with a complimentary breakfast, to be a worthwhile investment.

8. Common Complaints

While highly regarded, a few recurring criticisms are noted:

  • Lack of Air Conditioning: This is the most frequently cited complaint, particularly during warmer periods, leading to uncomfortable room temperatures and disturbed sleep even with provided fans or open windows (which can bring in noise).
  • Noise from outside: Due to the central location and nearby tram, opening windows for ventilation can lead to nighttime noise.
  • Minor Room Issues: Occasional reports of an overly soft bed, running toilets, or confusing light switches have been mentioned.
  • Inconsistent Housekeeping: One instance of less-than-thorough housekeeping was reported.
  • Understaffing at Reception: Some guests experienced delays due to perceived understaffing at the front desk.

Good hotel with a nice atmosphere on great location. Would have been 5 stars if roomservice was better. Waiting very long for the wrong soft drinks and burgers and bread (literally) soaked in sauce is not what most people would expect when ordering a burger and bread with butter. The Swedish kitchen is not famous for finesse but this was an outlier in a further super pleasant stay.

Our recent stay at Hôtel Reisen was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The hotel itself is stunning—perfectly blending 17th-century history with modern Scandinavian luxury. You can’t beat the location; being right on the water in Gamla Stan, we were just steps away from the Royal Palace and the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Town. The rooms were impeccably clean and cozy, and th...

Felt like a luxury hotel. The room was beautiful, clean and comfortable. I'm a sucker for a robe and slippers. Perfect location for everything we were doing. The only thing I was sad about was that the pool was a cold plunge pool, but it would've probably felt nice after the sauna. We didn't have a long stay but if we did we would have explored the two bars and common areas a little more. They loo...

Loved my stay here and would recommend to anyone. I was a solo traveller and felt safe and secure. The location was perfect and the staff were so nice. Thank you Miguel and Analise! I was given a present for my birthday and they were very welcoming. The sauna was great too.

The best location ever. Close to everything. Staff was nice and pretty helpful. Room was small and the bathroom even smaller. Hard to was your feet, every time you bent down you hit the shower door so it opened up. Beds were absolutely fantastic. Slept so good. Fabulous breakfast.
