Expert Review: Hotel ICON Hong Kong
Hotel ICON Hong Kong, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Keys property, consistently receives high praise for its modern design, exceptional service, and breathtaking views, making it a standout choice for travelers seeking a luxurious and unique experience in Hong Kong.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Hotel ICON enjoys an overwhelmingly positive sentiment among guests, frequently described with terms such as "Wonderful," "Excellent location, property and service," and "Everything is perfect." It consistently scores highly across various metrics including cleanliness (9.6), comfort (9.6), staff (9.4), and location (9.1), achieving an overall guest score of 9.3 on some platforms. The Michelin One-Key designation further solidifies its reputation as a "very special stay" that offers "much more than others in its price range" and where service "always goes the extra mile."
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make Hotel ICON special:
- Exceptional Service: The staff's friendliness, helpfulness, and attentive nature are frequently praised.
- Stunning Views: Panoramic vistas of Victoria Harbour, especially during the nightly light show, are a major draw.
- Innovative Design: The hotel boasts a sophisticated, modern aesthetic curated by international design stars like Sir Terence Conran, featuring a visually striking vertical garden in the lobby designed by Patrick Blanc.
- Unique Concept: As a teaching and research hotel for The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management, it offers a distinctive hospitality experience where service is both polished and forward-thinking.
- Thoughtful Amenities: The complimentary mini-bar with snacks and drinks, along with a free Handy smartphone offering 4G data and international calls, are highly appreciated guest perks.
- Rooftop Pool & Spa: The heated rooftop pool and bar provide spectacular skyline views, offering a tranquil escape above the bustling city.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Hotel ICON are consistently described as spacious, comfortable, and impeccably clean, often featuring elegant and functional designs. Many rooms offer impressive floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of Hong Kong Harbour or the city skyline.
Key features include:
- Comfort: King beds with custom imported down comforters and pillows ensure a luxurious rest.
- Spacious Bathrooms: Equipped with deep tubs and separate walk-in showers.
- Work & Tech: Large work desks, high-speed internet, 40-inch Samsung Smart TVs, in-room printers, and KEF Bluetooth audio systems cater to both business and leisure travelers.
- Complimentary Luxuries: Free snacks and drinks in the mini-bar, Nespresso coffee machines, bathrobes, slippers, and in-room safes are standard.
- Designer Suites: The Vivienne Tam Designer Suite is a notable highlight, featuring a unique design inspired by her New York apartment and offering 280-degree harbour views.
4. Dining Experience
Hotel ICON offers a diverse and highly-regarded culinary experience across its three main venues:
- Above & Beyond: Located on the 28th floor, this Michelin-recommended restaurant serves exquisite classic and contemporary Cantonese cuisine alongside unforgettable views of Victoria Harbour.
- The Market: Voted as one of the best buffets in Hong Kong for nine consecutive years, The Market offers an extensive international selection, including fresh seafood, sashimi, roast meats, and its famous durian desserts, prepared in seven open kitchens.
- GREEN: Situated in the lobby and anchored by Asia's largest indoor vertical garden, GREEN operates as a café in the morning and a brasserie throughout the day, offering brunch, legendary afternoon tea, and casual evening meals.
While the food quality is generally excellent, some guests have found the atmosphere of The Market's dining room during breakfast to be somewhat "stifling" or "too basic" compared to the hotel's luxurious overall design. There have also been mentions of a 60-minute time limit for breakfast.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Hotel ICON is consistently praised as a major strength, often exceeding expectations. Guests describe the staff as "phenomenal in how helpful they were," "friendly and accommodating," and "knowledgeable." The hotel's affiliation with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where many staff are students in training, is seen as contributing to a highly motivated and attentive service culture. Staff are noted for going "the extra mile," such as assisting with early check-ins and ensuring guests are prepared for weather changes with umbrellas.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hotel ICON is conveniently located in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, providing easy access to various attractions and transportation options:
- Attractions: It's within easy walking distance of Victoria Harbour, the Hong Kong Science Museum, K11 Shopping Mall, and Kowloon Park.
- Transport: The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from Hung Hom MTR Station, connecting to major subway lines (East Rail Line and Tuen Ma Line) and the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station for mainland China access. Public bus routes are also readily available.
- Shuttle Services: The hotel offers a free shuttle service to key points in Tsim Sha Tsui, mitigating any perception of being slightly further from the busiest shopping areas.
- Airport Transfer: For arrivals and departures, the hotel provides private transportation services, including Tesla chauffeured cars, with a bus option also available from Kowloon Union Church directly to Airport Terminal 1.
While some past reviews noted its location as "a bit far from Center Kowloon," the free shuttle service effectively bridges this minor gap.
7. Value & Pricing
Hotel ICON is generally considered to offer excellent value for a five-star luxury property in Hong Kong. Typical nightly rates have ranged from approximately $245 (weeknight) to $289 (weekend night) or C$234 to C$407, with the cheapest deals often found in May and July. The inclusion of complimentary mini-bar items, a Handy smartphone for city use, and the high quality of facilities and service significantly contribute to the perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor recurring criticisms include:
- Breakfast Dining Atmosphere: Some guests found the ambiance of The Market restaurant during breakfast to be less inspiring or "stifling" compared to the overall sophisticated design of the hotel.
- Breakfast Time Limit: The imposition of a 60-minute time limit for breakfast was mentioned as a drawback by at least one guest.
- Location (minor): Although well-connected by MTR and shuttle, a few older reviews indicated that the hotel is "a bit far" from the very center of Tsim Sha Tsui's main shopping districts if relying solely on walking.

I can not recommend this hotel highly enough. It is in a great position. The breakfast was fabulous, with so much choice, catering for all. But most importantly, what made our stay so enjoyable, was the staff. They were so friendly, accommodating, nothing was too much. We would definitely stay here again.
