Expert Review: Het Arresthuis
Het Arresthuis, Roermond: A Unique Luxury Escape
Het Arresthuis in Roermond, Netherlands, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its exceptional blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Housed in a beautifully converted 19th-century prison, the hotel offers guests a truly distinctive and memorable stay.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Het Arresthuis is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "exceptional," "stunning," and "wonderful." Review platforms often show ratings around 9.3 out of 10, reflecting high satisfaction across various aspects of the hotel experience. The unique concept of sleeping in a former prison, reimagined with luxurious comforts, is a major draw and contributes significantly to its superb reputation.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight the hotel's unique design and ambiance as a top feature, with the preservation of original prison elements, like the cell doors and hallways, adding to its character. The excellent service and the warm, welcoming nature of the staff are also frequently mentioned. Its prime central location in Roermond and convenient amenities such as secure on-site parking (for a fee), a fitness center, and a sauna are also highly appreciated.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Het Arresthuis are celebrated for their luxurious, modern, and stylish interiors, offering a stark contrast to their former purpose as prison cells. While retaining nods to its heritage, each room provides ample comfort, featuring air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and comfortable seating areas. Guests particularly commend the comfortable beds, often equipped with premium and hypo-allergenic bedding, along with a pillow menu. The ensuite bathrooms are noted for their quality showers, some with rainfall showerheads, and complimentary toiletries. Three former cells are typically combined to create one spacious guest room.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's on-site restaurant, Damianz, offers an international gourmet dining experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, set within a stylish interior that respectfully incorporates authentic historical details. Chef Jeroen van Gansewinkel's cuisine is characterized by balance, creativity, and attention to detail, complemented by Maître-sommelier David Manders' expertise in wine selection and hospitality. Breakfast, which includes cooked-to-order options, is frequently praised by guests as "delicious" and among the "best hotel breakfasts" from both a food and service perspective, though it is offered at an additional cost of approximately EUR 28.50 per adult. The modern bar provides a cozy atmosphere for drinks and snacks.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Het Arresthuis consistently receives glowing reviews. Guests describe the staff as "super good," "extremely friendly," "exceptional," and going "above and beyond." Reviewers frequently mention feeling welcomed from the moment of arrival, highlighting the staff's professionalism, helpfulness, and genuine care, even accommodating early access for guests arriving in challenging weather conditions.
6. Location & Accessibility
Het Arresthuis boasts a superb central location in the historic heart of Roermond. It is conveniently situated within a short walking distance of key attractions such as Munsterkerk, St. Christopher's Cathedral, and the popular Designer Outlet Roermond (approximately 4-10 minutes by foot). The Roermond train station is also easily accessible, about a 6-minute walk away. For those arriving by car, secure, private on-site parking is available for a fee of EUR 10.00 per stay, though spaces can be limited. The hotel also offers good accessibility for guests with mobility needs, including wheelchair accessibility, an elevator, and accessible public washrooms.
7. Value & Pricing
While the overall experience at Het Arresthuis is highly valued, some guests have raised concerns regarding the hotel's value for money, particularly concerning the cost of dining and breakfast. Room rates can vary significantly depending on the season and room type, ranging from approximately $162 to over $300 per night. In addition to the room rate, guests should account for the optional breakfast cost (EUR 28.50 per adult) and a city tax of EUR 3.65 per person, per night. Paid parking is also an additional expense.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the high satisfaction, a few recurring minor issues have been noted by guests. Some experienced slow service at the bar during peak times. Additionally, a handful of visitors reported inconsistent Wi-Fi signal strength or connectivity issues within their rooms. While generally positive, the pricing of breakfast and other dining options is sometimes mentioned as a point of concern for overall value.

We stayed in the Directors room one of the largest and it was absolutely unbelievable extra spacious and finished with incredible attention to detail. The staff truly went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and special. We enjoyed a 5 course dinner with 6 people easily worthy of at least a Michelin star. We have stayed in many hotels while visiting the Netherlands and this without quest...

Room 3/5: I was room 9 Rooms on the ground floor or facing the car park, the sound insulation is very poor. There is also too much light in the morning, as you can see in the picture taken at 7:30am. The curtains are not effective. Personal very polite and professional !!! Very good breakfast !

Lovely hotel with a fun theme. Service is excellent and easy private parking onsite. The rooms are a little noisy, but not a big problem. Breakfast is great, but I didn’t eat for dinner as it’s only set menus. It looked good, but if you’re not so hungry, there’s plenty of restaurants in the area.

very good food! staff was very attentive “compliments”. 7 course Chef menu was fantastic! At the end the chef came to chat and was very interested in our experiences. So it can also be real service and real gastronomy. We will definitely come back to you again!
