Expert Review: Gut Klostermühle

Gut Klostermühle: A Tranquil Nature Retreat with Michelin Recognition

Gut Klostermühle in Briesen, Germany, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely praised as a serene nature resort and medical spa, offering guests a unique blend of relaxation and natural beauty. It's an ideal escape for those seeking peace and rejuvenation amidst the idyllic Madlitz Falkenhagen Lake District.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Gut Klostermühle is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "magical place" and a "perfect retreat." Review scores for cleanliness, comfort, and staff are particularly high, often ranging from 8.9 to 9.4 out of 10. While some acknowledge it can be expensive, many find the experience worthwhile, especially for its tranquil atmosphere and extensive wellness offerings.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Gut Klostermühle for its stunning location directly on Lake Madlitz, nestled within a forest. The extensive BRUNE BALANCE med & SPA, with its indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, saunas, fitness center, and a wide array of treatments including Ayurvedic therapies, is a major draw. The harmonious blend of natural materials and architecture with the surrounding nature also receives high praise.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers 66 individually decorated and furnished accommodations, including rooms, suites, holiday apartments, and houses. Guests often describe rooms as cozy, comfortable, and spacious, with many offering lovely lake views. Accommodations typically include minibars (though the hotel consciously forgoes minibars in hotel rooms as a sustainability measure, offering snacks and cold drinks at reception instead), safes, separate sitting areas, flat-screen TVs with premium cable channels, and bathrooms with bathtubs or showers, bathrobes, complimentary toiletries, and hair dryers. Complimentary wireless internet and bottled water are also provided. While generally well-regarded, some reviewers have noted that certain parts of the facility, including some rooms, show signs of age or wear. Specific feedback includes mentions of hard beds, thin duvets in winter, and flat pillows, along with occasional issues like poorly closing balcony doors or mold in tile grout.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience is a significant highlight for many guests. The Klosterscheune restaurant, with its cozy atmosphere and fireplace, serves fresh, modern, vital cuisine with a high regional content. On sunny days, guests can dine on a spacious terrace overlooking Lake Madlitz. Breakfast consistently receives positive remarks, with an excellent and varied buffet, including plenty of vegan options. Dinner also receives good feedback, with a daily changing 2- or 3-course menu (vegetarian options available). There are also mentions of a Finkenlounge and a Spa Bistro.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Gut Klostermühle is frequently described as "absolutely excellent," with staff being "really friendly," "attentive," and doing "everything they could to make our stay comfortable." Many guests appreciate the helpfulness and discretion of the personnel across all areas of the hotel.

6. Location & Accessibility

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Briesen (Alt Madlitz), Gut Klostermühle boasts an idyllic and secluded location in the middle of a forest on Lake Madlitz, offering ample opportunities for walking and connecting with nature. It provides a peaceful retreat away from city life. The hotel is approximately 70 kilometers from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), about an hour's drive via the A10 and A12 motorways. For those preferring public transport, the Briesen Mark Train Station is about 6 km away, and the hotel offers a shuttle service for a fee. Nearby attractions include the historic town of Fürstenwalde and the Spreewald biosphere reserve.

7. Value & Pricing

Pricing at Gut Klostermühle can vary depending on the season and room type, with average nightly rates around $162-$206. Some guests consider it to be "quite expensive", and the value for money has been questioned by some reviewers. However, many believe the price is justified by the unique location, extensive facilities, and overall experience, often calling it an "absolutely appropriate price" for the quality offered.

8. Common Complaints

While overall satisfaction is high, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Occasional reports of service issues, particularly in the spa and restaurant areas.
  • Some guests felt that certain amenities could be improved.
  • Concerns about the perceived value for the price.
  • Rooms in the hotel building are sometimes described as small or cramped, making it challenging for two people.
  • A few mentions of rooms or facilities showing some signs of age, such as bad insulation, badly closing balcony doors, or mold in tile grout.
  • Specific comfort complaints, like beds being too hard, duvets too thin in winter, and pillows being too flat or sparse.
  • Limited alternatives for a smaller, informal evening snack outside of the main, high-quality dinner menu.
  • Lack of air conditioning in hotel rooms, which might lead to stuffiness in warmer months.
  • The outdoor pool is not heated and thus only usable in high summer.
  • Some guests experienced issues with WiFi connectivity.
  • Pets are not allowed in hotel rooms, the spa area, its sunbathing lawn, or in restaurants (except Klosterscheune), with a fee for pet accommodation in holiday apartments/houses.

My husband had a medical emergency the day before our trip— we booked with cancellation, but still the cancellation isn’t until the moment you arrive. I messaged them from the hospital waiting room, and they told me we were past the cancellation period, sorry. Didn’t offer that we move the reservation, kept all of our money, including the board. We of course had documentation because he was in the...

Never seen such chemistry of people involved in all activities within hotel! Reception, restaurant(David), housekeeping. Everything and everyone seemed to click here. Bravo. We were part of Alfa Classic Club Group. Wonderful location at the end of the world. Couldn't find our way walking around Madlitz lake, we turned around halfway.

Beautiful location, nice spa. We were surprised by the service : when we asked about the time our room would be cleaned, we were informed that the cleaning staff came only every other/second day. Considering the price of the rooms, this did not feel right. We had a gallery room, which we would not recommend in future because the bedroom area was under the roof and hot in the summer night (no air-...

Pretty disappointed. We booked a 3-day stay to get some spa treatments and a little timeout from the busy city life. The timeout part worked, the spa part not. It is not possible to get any kind of cosmetic spa treatments here during the week! Which would have been nice to read somewhere (f.ex on their homepage) in advance. We had one massage, but that was it then. Luckily we had very good weather...

we came here for a peaceful getaway from the hustle bustle of city life, which we got… However, this came with a few unexpected adaptations. The man at the reception was very stubborn and slow, eg. could not tell us the estimated walking duration for getting to places around the resort. We arrived in the dark and were offered neither help with our luggage, nor exact directions. This led to us havi...
